“Your mothers warned you about my coming.
Fear the moment.”
The white savior trope turned on its head is so well done in this, from the setup to what’s to come, and how Paul is shaped and ends up is almost subtle at points yet sooo effective. The manipulation of the foreign people from their land aspects integrated into his story was *chefs kiss* rather I shouldn’t say integrated but IS his journey. Frank Herbert I believe is the reason for this which is edging my curiosity about the books so I might just have to buy them.
There is so much to appreciate about this film I can’t praise it enough. I have a theory about a lot of the visions Paul has and what it will mean for the third film that’ll I’ll prolly explore in a later review.
Denis is both the worst and best direction for this project. What makes this film on the level of Lord of the Rings and Star Wars is solely him, its space Game of Thrones (I haven’t seen got) in its scope, a true epic. He’s proved time and time again his visionary excellence.
After giving it some time and thought I’ve pinpointed what my main issue has been. With allat being said. it still suffers because of Denis’ writing style. Between this film and Dune Part 1 I’ve seen when it comes to the structure of scenes and dialogue he lacks depth and a certain needed characterization, fleshing out a lot of these characters. This does end up giving the film a more grander feel as these characters are like pieces in a game of chess. Obviously not a huge issue given my rating but it makes sense considering his public thoughts on dialogue in films…
Also definitely taking a break from watching this movie, four is enough. At least until I get it on physical 🥸
