Alien

Incredible to think Ridley was gonna follow up the Duellists with a frilly version of Tristan and Isolde; this is what we call in the business a “hard pivot.” Ultimately, it’s possible to be an ornery, and even obstinate, Scott agnostic and still think ALIEN is incredible, albeit as a job of work rather than a work of art:  it’s exactly the sum of its parts., which were all excellently project managed despite myriad complications and plenty of in fighting.…

Watching this movie is like getting a base hit. It’s so pure, specific, and finite. But while it’s happening, you’ve never been happier and you never want it to be over.

Madame Web

2024

Zosia Mamet, girl... what were you thinking g up for this dumpster fire? Feels like this movie is a disservice to the character Madame Web.

Cringe ending 🤢 Bland acting, super bad writing, villain is ass... like so much pointless stuff. Dakota going "gaaaaames" and "I don't know man" are the only two times I laughed so hard because it's Dakota just being Dakota at those given moments. Only compliment I can give is that whoever composed the score made some tracks that sounded pleasant to my ears.

Sony, kindly fuck off and give the Spidey rights fully back to Marvel Entertainment.

Seeing Society of the Snow at the Roxie instead of at home on my couch was worth every penny and every minute to experience one of the best films of 2023 the way it was clearly meant to be seen, in a theater where you can sniffle along with other audience for 144 minutes, marvel at an audience member's breaking into sobs at one character's death, and finally burst into almost uncontrollable sobbing yourself when the credits roll after…

The Nun

I came into The Nun with extremely low expectations and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it! I...I feel bad liking it more than I probably should, so I do need to acknowledge that while it easily clears the bar of "Better than Annabelle," it doesn't come close to "As good as the Annabelle sequels." I can't argue with the Rotten Tomatoes consensus of "The Nun boasts strong performances, spooky atmospherics, and a couple decent set-pieces, but its…

absolutely no one:

me, every 5 minutes to the increasingly annoyed stranger sitting next to me: “they definitely made the robots hotter in this one right?? like i simply don’t them ever being this sexy 🥵”

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

Needed about 900% more screen time from Stratosphere, the old British cargo plane autobot with a robo-mustache.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods

Ah, yes, the insultingly pointless death knell of the DCEU. We are now in the underworld of rock bottom, and the James Gunn reset cannot come soon enough.

Honestly, I was a big fan of the first Shazam. I liked both Levi and Angel in the role and I loved the foster family dynamic. The humor had its charm and never felt like too much. But this…this is pure, unadulterated ass water. The attempts at comedy are unbearable, and Levi…

Shazam! Fury of the Gods

★★ Watched by Matt Singer

The creators of Shazam! Fury of the Gods faced a conceptual dilemma they never quite solved. The point and pleasure of the first Shazam! was watching a dumb teenager figure out how to be a superhero: Testing the limits of his powers, tentatively trying (and often failing) to do good. But by the end of movie, the kid had gotten the hang of the superhero game. He defeated a super-villain, saved Philadelphia, found the birth mother who’d abandoned him as…

You know when a movie is directly made for you to feel ripped apart into 1 million pieces but that feeling alone makes you feel like a complete person and then you get to drive alone home and cry to Radiohead? Yeah :) yeah one of those ones for lil ol’ Edebiri (me!)
