The Strangers: Chapter 1

2024

★★

“Is Tamara here?”

Oh boy. I liked the use of The Moody Blues, and the piano scene was sick even if it was brief, but the rest was a slog. At no point did I find myself cheering for Ryan and Maya, who weren’t very likable from the moment they appeared on screen. The setting is nice but somehow underutilized. I don’t know how you accomplish that with a cabin in the middle of nowhere, so kudos to them on that.

To me, the biggest let down were the strangers themselves. In The Strangers and The Strangers: Prey at Night they are senseless, violent people. There’s no reason for what they’re doing and it’s brutal. Their presence in this isn’t scary and feels tame compared to the previous two.

A new The Strangers movie doesn’t have to be great but it shouldn’t be boring, and The Strangers; Chapter 1 certainly was.
