2025 Cult Movie Challenge Week 12: Film Noir Week

“You shouldn't have been that sentimental.”

Maybe not noir in the classical sense but it’s got all the elements done up in the Hitchcockian way I love so much. Found myself leaning forward in my seat multiple times. Never knew where it was going next but I was along for the ride.

James Stewart playing Scottie as a sympathetic figure at first who turns into a villain is great stuff. The…

“I am not an elephant! I am not an animal! I am a human being! I am…a man!”

I’ve tried to find the correct words for this review multiple times but every time I come back to how heartbreaking, beautiful, and visually stunning the whole thing is. John Hurt’s performance tore me apart. The dignity and care he shows shines through the second we see him on screen. Hopkins is also fantastic. Flowers to Lynch, too, for getting so much out of his cast and creating something that’ll stick with me for a long time.

“Aren't you a little young for full-?”
”Aren't you a little old for video games?”

That final match was what it felt like getting multiple concussions in a Title Fight pit circa 2012 but running back in when they started playing 27.

Every second there’s combat it’s a 5 star movie I can’t look away from. The score and the crowds while these dudes are going at it had me fully…

“One day maybe you'll learn that not being able to relate to other people isn't a badge of honor.”

Wasn’t sure what to expect here but I know I ended up enjoying it a lot. A great mix of family drama and satire backed by some incredibly good performances. A well made movie from top to bottom.

“Come now, let's be off. There's a battle in the offing! We've got kingdoms to save and women to love!”

Wasn’t sure what to expect from this so I was surprised how bloody it all was. Can’t say it’s great but the set designs are dope, it has some disturbing (complimentary) practical effects, and it’s a fun time even if it gets nonsensical. Plus, how cool is that sword? Shame we don’t see it that often.

“Don't let your mouth get your ass in trouble.”

Richard Roundtree shines in this. Makes the character serious but fun at the same time. The Isaac Hayes soundtrack adds such a great vibe, too.

“Why should you be afraid to die? Your soul has been dead for a long time.”

Can never get enough of these movies. The Corman/Price/Poe trio works so well for me. I don’t know if it’s my favorite but it’s a great time. The whole thing has that macabre feeling you want from something like this.

“I wanna know why you claim to be Sigmund Freud.”
”Why do you claim I'm not Sigmund Freud?”
”Why do you keep asking me these questions
”Tell me about your mother.”

There are some movies that are so simple yet so fun and this is one of them. So many good jokes sprinkled throughout and it’s the perfect runtime. No notes.

”Oh, thank God. I thought that you actually hurt yourself.”

Couldn’t help but think Jonathan looked like Robert Pattinson. Also, the green goo coming out of the creepy clown/jester mask scared the shit out of me I’m not gonna lie to you all. Fun stuff, though. I’d definitely summon a bunch of these little guys if the option was given to me.

“REM sleep that occurs later during the sleep cycle is longer and easier to analyze. If earlier cycles are, say, artsy film shorts, later cycles are like feature-length blockbuster movies.”

A fascinating story told in such a creative way. It straps you in from the first scene and takes you on a wild ride through vibrant dreams and dark nightmares. The score is fantastic, too. What a movie to start 2025 with!
