some spoiler-y thoughts:
- austin butler is somehow silly and at the same time incredibly intimidating. i think the comparisons to the joker and anton chigurh are blown a bit out of proportion but its very apparent he's having a blast and he's so much fun to watch.
- was initially surprised how much this deviates from the novel although looking back, it makes complete sense why the adaptation changes were made and if anything it strengthens the narrative with what the movie chooses to role with. leading up to the movie i was wondering how denis was gonna deal with alia. don't get me wrong id be all for a three year old running around in the final battle and stabbing people but cutting that out was the right move.
- zendaya completely owns the last 15 minutes. if every cutback to javier bardem sells the ascendency to the kwisatz haderach, every cutback to zendaya locks in the dread involved with taking such a mantle. that eye twitch she's doing when paul asks for irulan's hand is movie star shit! that's what it's all about!
- deeply respect the mission of lea seydoux: be the hottest woman alive.
- absolutely adore the final paul/feyd fight. i feel like the comparisons to the spidey/goblin fight in the first raimi spider-man are apt. no music, just the sound of grunts and blades hitting. it makes things so much more visceral and exciting!
- fully on board for dune messiah seeing where this decides to end but honestly I think denis should make something else before committing to messiah. only because i feel like the actors need to be a bit older to sell the age of time but hey what do i know. denis the GOAT. whatever he does next, i'm completely on board.
