Dune: Part Two

2024

★★★★★

A miracle of modern filmmaking. Denis Villeneuve does the impossible by delivering something that often feels like it was truly created in another galaxy. A film so gigantic in scope and themes that it almost knocks you out from mental exhaustion, and yet somehow it only feels like we've barely scratched the surface of this story. A visual marvel with some of the most jawdropping artistic choices I've ever seen; several that show me exactly why many thought this material was simply unfilmable, but with the combination of Villeneuve and Fraser it was expertly brought to life. Fantastic performances delivered across the board, ranging from perhaps Timothée Chalamet's career best work to Austin Butler embodying one of the most threatening villains in my cinematic experience. The year is not even halfway over, but Hans Zimmer has almost certainly locked up another oscar nomination for his monumental score, that almost if by pure musical magic increases the level of part one's sonic beauty. An otherworldly experience at the theater that is so rarely achieved and the solidifying of Denis Villeneuve as the contemporary king of sci-fi.
