Very, very funny, until it becomes relentlessly, overwhelmingly sad.
Can't help but see the parallels with "Happy Go Lucky." That one's about an eternal optimist, who is either enlightened or very naive (named Poppy); while this one's about a bottomless misanthrope with seemingly no empathy (named Pansy). Both ask how these people got this way, and how we should live our own lives in response to the cruelties of the world.
I think this is Mike Leigh's great subject - how should a person be?
