Extremely funny. This is only my 5th Wes Anderson and this is probably my favorite live-action film from him so far. Loved all the standouts here like Michael Cera, Richard Ayoade, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Mia Threapleton. Benecio Del Toro really carries this film is such an interesting way he is so perfect here. Obviously charming and gorgeous and singular. "Consequences!"

As if the previous three films didnt make it overt enough, John Wick is a biblical level hero, the likes of which have never been seen. And it is here where he just wants to rest. Some of the greatest action, stunts, amd direction of the century in all honesty. Quadruples down on eveything that makes this series work and soaks it in more neon than the legal limit. Hits you with a Lawrence of Arabia Match Cut right off the bat. Pretty early on there is a 30+ min action sequence in Tokyo and youre like "wow this is the coolest thing ive ever seen. Donnie Yen is blind and charged his fist before punching a guy. Holy shit they all got bulletproof suits and bows and arrows?!" and then like 30 mins later you get greeted with the nightclub sequence with Scott Adkins in the greatest fat suit since Fat Bastard in the Austin Powers movies. Soaked in water and blood and in glorious slo-mo. John is bathed in light and baptized in fire, job nearly done. Then we have the Paris finale. I mean, what can you even say about this. Dragon's Breath shotgun + top down scene. The chase and shootout around the Arc de Triomphe. The Big Stairs. And the duel in the sunrise. Outplay and outwit. John can finally rest....for now.
Belongs in the same tier as modern action epics like The Raid 2, Mad Max: Fury Road & Furiosa, and the McQ Mission: Impossible films.

My man Stephen King sure loves his internal monologues so its cool to see it brought to screen in such a cool way on this. "It'll be a universe. Isn't that wonderful?"

This was one of my most anticipated films of the year because I am a massive Mike Flanagan fan. Midnight Mass is one of the finest works of the decade imo. His style just matches so well with Stephen King so no wonder most of his work is adapting his stories or drawing heavy inspiration from them. What a treat to get to see this early too. While this isnt a horror story like most other Flanagan and King work, the way Flanagan harnesses fear and turns it into something beautiful is beyond words. This film is so aggressively For Me. Every single performance, no matter how small, feels so full, so alive. A film brimming with life, sentimentality, and love. Genuinely heartwarming and so so tender. Stunning visuals. Presented so intentionally in its form and structure. Certain shots on Chuck have such a sheer level of shallowness to them where he is the only thing in focus in the frame and it makes you feel like you are at the center of the universe. Because you are. One of the best of the year, easily.

What a bizarre little movie. So incredibly at odds with itself. On one hand you have a refreshing and fun spin on this franchise and on the other you have a desperate attempt to recapture the magic of the 80s original. What we get is a film that kinda fails to do either. The first half has a good twist on what we expect, with the setup we know, but it slowly morphs into a "hey look its that one guy from that other thing" and totally robs the story of any personality for some quips and callbacks. Thing is, is doesnt really commit to either side of the coin. What we're left with is a half-baked and underdeveloped Karate Kid film. Feels like its 3 hours long. Bleh. Ben Wang innocent.

"How do you fuck that up?!"

Feels like such a massive work despite it being so small-scale. Cronenberg almost takes a more resigned approach to his direction and really lets the characters breathe and operate. Such a great premise to dissect and Viggo Mortensen plays it so expertly. You can see it in his eyes, even before he finally says it out loud. Maybe my favorite Cronenberg so far? "And the Lord said, gentlemen, 'He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone.'"

Kind of the scariest film. So tense, and so stressful. Running down the clock on the end of the world, helpless to stop it. Lumet always had such a clear handle on intensity. His most popular films like 12 Angry Men and Dog Day Afternoon famously take place mostly in one place but feel like you are running a marathon with their plotting and especially dialogue and thats no different here. Boils down to the most important conversation in the situation room. THIS is ground zero. One mistake ends the world, but so does inaction, and so does any action. Checkmated yourself. Some incredible cinematography and lighting give this such a dour and scary look. One of the best films I have watched this year. Cant imagine watching this in 1964 lol.

"Wong. Just Wong? Like Adele? Or Aristotle. Drake. Bono... Eminem."

Been a couple months since my last entry in this MCU rewatch because it bummed me out so much. Captain America: Civil War was one of my favs, but seeing it again with a more critical eye disappointed me incredibly. But now I'm back. And once again I have done a near 180 on an MCU film I used to think was great. This one is just a total bore for a lot of the runtime. Covers a lot of similar themes, in of the main character, as Iron Man and once again follows the tired formula of these origin movies. Mads Mikkelsen is wasted to such an astonishing degree. What bothers me most about this one is that despite all the magical powers and unique spells they have access to, most fight scenes end up just being two people punching each other or beating one another with objects that are made of sparks so it looks cools, but its no different from say something like The Winter Soldier. The few scene where they do embrace the weirdness are actually fun, the vfx are crazy good, but the way the characters are integrated and the way its shot is just so bland. So so disappointed.

Despite this not having some sci-fi type concepts, it still has a lot of the same themes of flesh and metal and the melding of the two that many other Cronenberg's have in some way, shape, or form. Almost treats sex like a mechanical operation. Never seen a movie quite like this lol. Probably my 2nd fav Cronenberg of the binge so far!

"I need you to trust me...one last time."

In its opening minutes, The Final Reckoning, gets to work at serializing and mythologizing all of Ethan Hunt's adventures. In this opening we are faced with The Entity and its destructive power, and the only man in the world who can stop it. Insantly sets up armageddon-level stakes, either choice ends with catastrophic consequences. And Ethan never stops. With stakes higher than ever, it does the best thing it couldve done: it keeps raising them. The sense of hopelessness hits a fever pitch. Paranoia and fear heightened to the max. Borderline despair as the clock ticks down. By recontextualizing moments and characters from the older films while also having surprising returns and reveals in the present give this series a firm throughline. There is no time to wait, there is no room for error, so we are at full speed ahead for nearly 3 hours and it is exhilarating. The mission has never felt more impossible. The world is truly backed into the corner and only Ethan Hunt can pull them from the brink. McQ's direction here is still incredible and Tom Cruise has never been better. He captures the very essence of desperation while remaining unwaveringly dedicated to his mission. The way things get crazier and crazier as scenes go by is outstanding. Its just a constant incline of insanity and stress. The action here is some of the very best in the franchise, but the stunts have once again topped themselves. The two major setpieces are among the greatest ever. The biplane chase might very well be the greatest stunt setpiece of all time. Absolutely mindboggling stuff going on there, my jaw was on the floor. This one is especially good at showing the comedy in these insane situations and stakes. Gabriel is a borderline cartoon villain, just hamming it up on screen and its a sight to behold. Looney Tunes-esque fight scenes at times, Buster Keaton level stunts to match. Such a large ing cast but everyone has their time to shine even if they have just a couple minutes of screentime. There is so much going on, so much to do, so little time. Everything rides on Ethan and they make the biggest film and mission they posdibly couldve, and in turn, makes this whole series one big mission in a way. I was sweating bullets and forgetting to breathe for so much of this film. As the closing minutes rolled was when i really started reflecting on this series, a series I grew up with that I like now more than ever. I have spent that last week rewatch each and every one of them on The Road to The Final Reckoning, and it hit me that it is actually over. These movies are such a big part of my life and are foundational to who I am as both a movie fan and a person as corny as it is to say. This chapter of it all is finished. A truly magical film, but its so much more than that. This isnt just a movie, this isnt just a film series, this is Mission: Impossible.

MISSION: ACCOMPLISHED!

"Listen up. An American operative with a grievance against his country is missing and has malfunctioned. His agenda represents a threat to our national interests, and he must be neutralized at all cost. Anything in this man's possession is of vital importance and must be captured intact. The man himself is expendable. He is not to be underestimated: a master of infiltration, deception, sabotage and psych warfare. For all intents and purposes, ladies and gentlemen, a mind-reading, shape-shifting incarnation of chaos. So, for your safety, and the safety of those around you, do not consider him secure unless you have driven a wooden stake through his open heart. This is not a drill."

After rewatching every single Mission: Impossible film in the last 7 days, I still hold firm that this one is the best one. But now, I think it has taken an even bigger lead over the previous films which I still consider to be among the greatest actions films of all time. This one is my favorite because I think it balances all of the tones from the last 3 films so expertly. It has the silly insanity of Ghost Protocol, it has the spy paranoia of Rogue Nation and the original film (there are many homages to De Palma's film in this and it rocks) and it has the intensity and utterly baffling stunt showcases of Fallout. Tom Cruise is clearly trying to die in the most glorious way possible. There is a sense of hopelessness that permeates the film, it really feels like the IMF is hanging by a thread, the whole world on the brink. It adds so much tension to the already insanely tense setpieces, the chase in the airport, the Rome car chase, the Entity party, and especially the roughly 45 minute train sequence, which in my humble opinion, is currently one of the greatest action setpieces ever put to screen. The whole cast is all giving it their all, the ing performances are especially great here. For such a huge cast, there is no weak link. Cary Elwes and Henry Czerny are going blow for blow on best line reads in the film, but so much energy comes from Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Esai Morales, and Vanessa Kirby. Pom Klementieff is a highlight of the action scenes she is a part of. And ofc Shea Whigham is hilarious here with the best line in the movie. The direction here is the best in the series, McQ does such a wonderful job of making this the most dynamic looking M:I film yet. The colors pop, the camera is MOVING, and there is never a dull visual throughout the near 3 hour runtime. This was my favorite upon my first watch and it remains my favorite as of now. Tomorrow I trust Ethan Hunt one last time and watch The Final Reckoning. Im gonna be so sad for this series Ive had all my life end. Grew up with these, my favorite movie series. It will end with a bang im sure. Glory to the IMF!

Plays like a darker B-side to Chungking Express but remains just as beautiful. Loved the visuals especially in this one. Its so GREEN. For the Real Yearners. I need to lock in on Wong Kar-wai's filmography he is looking like an instant favorite of mine.

"I'm jumping out a window!"

Good argument to be made this is the best film ever made, and yet somehow the next one is even better. As if Rogue Nation wasnt already perfect, McQ & Cruise & Co found a way to improve on virtually every level while also making this one visually distinct from the last one. Cold and visceral, but enough warmth for the characters and writing to shine through. This is the one I have seen the most because it has such an oddly cozy vibe and it was my favorite in the years leading up to Dead Reckoning, so naturally I had it on repeat. Some of the most tense and well-executed action of all time. The helicopter sequence is one of my favs in the franchise and now that I own the blu-ray I got to see it with the expanded aspect ratio. What stands out the most for me here is oddly the score. Lorne Balfe is a godsend, but the scores have always been amazing in this series, but my god it adds so much to this one. Cruise and Cavill god mode here. Benji, Luther, and Ilsa are so good in this one. So fun having Julia come back for this one to raise the stakes even higher just when you think we have reached the max. Wonderful ending. I see why this one is the fan favorite, but my heart still belongs to Dead Reckoning as of now. Excited to rewatch tmrw!

Punching myself for not watching Wong Kar-wai's films sooner. What an incredible introduction to him, this was singular. With its dual structure in halves it really shows the full spectrum of love and loss. Faye Wong and Tony Leung are phenomenal. Such a dreamlike quality that permeates the film. Columned-coded movie for sure. And just when you thought the soundtrack couldnt get any better it hits you with a cover of Dreams by The Cranberries.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Are you okay to drive? A minute ago you were dead."

"What are you talking about?"

As much as I love this series and especially Ghost Protocol, this is the film which shifts things into high gear. Christopher McQuarrie came in and its not hard to see why they let him be the first and only director to make multiple Mission: Impossible films. His direction is outstanding, especially in the setpieces. The editing is notably amazing here too. The Opera scene, the car/bike chase, the final confrontation with Lane, all edited to perfect for maximum tension and thrills. Looks stunning and its so fun seeing how McQuarrie has a clear visual throughline while also having each of his M:I films look unique enough to stand out. I somehow always forget how funny this one is. Would be the best movie in any other franchise, but here its barely Top 3 for me as of now. Glory to Benji Dunn. Glory to Luther Stickell. Glory to Ilsa Faust. Glory to Ethan Hunt. Glory to the IMF. And Alex Baldwin's character says it best:

"Hunt is uniquely trained and highly motivated - a specialist without equal - immune to any countermeasures. There is no secret he cannot extract, no security he cannot breach, no person he cannot become. He has most likely anticipated this very conversation and is waiting to strike in whatever direction we move. Sir, Hunt is the living manifestation of destiny - and he has made you his mission."

Extremely gnarly with no pulled punches. This film has such an evil presence from the get-go. Even before the studio logos hit you already are hit with disturbing imagery that makes you feel gross and unsafe. Sally Hawkins is demented here, absolutely incredible performance that really displays her range. The manipulation on display is such a gross use of power it is beyond disturbing. Deeply upsetting, id even go so far as to say this is an evil film. Like it feels like it haunted me like im gonna die in 7 days now type shit. Bone-chilling. The premise may not be quite as inventive as the Phillipou's previous film, Talk to Me, but everything else is improved here. A couple scenes in here had me squinting and looking away and i have a high tolerance for stuff like this. And this is all made extra scary by the fact they never really explain how tf Sally Hawkins' character has access to this information. The audience is left in the dark on a lot of the evil shit which just makes it all the more terrifying. A true heater, i will now watch anything and everything the Phillipou's put in theaters after this incredible sophomore feature.

Like every other Malick I have seen (only 3 left to go now) it is utterly entrancing in its visual presentation, but this was the first one from him that simply did not click with me. I expected this to Really Work for me since I was born in the midwest and grew up there, but I think beyond the images that really hit it home for me, I really lacked a connection to the characters and themes which is a first for a Malick film in my journey. Really only in love with the cinematography, especially in how Malick continually evolves his presentation while firmly staying rooted in his sensibilities. Too disted for me too i think idk. Not a bad film, but disappointing for me who has loved ever Malick film up to this point.

I nortoriously do not really care for Tim Burton films, so im very happy to have found another one I really enjoyed! Movies about movies are a very easy way to get me to like them and this was really heartfelt in a way I did not expect. Very empathetic and full of exuberance. It doesnt matter how people receive your art if you loved making it, love and respect for the craft is the most important part most of the time. Martin Landau is astonishing here. Lovely black and white photography! Orson Welles scene by far the best part.

Post-war nuclear paranoia made tangible. The fear of the unstoppable. Overwhelming odds, overwhelming destruction. But we can fight it, together. "Your line's not long enough!"

"NO SHIT!"

I am so deeply attached to this film because its the one I watched the most growing up along with the original. I really did grow up on these movies and this was my favorite one for what felt like a long time but was really just like 3-4 years until Rogue Nation released. This one still feels the silliest to me in the best ways possible. The gadgets dont work half the time, they have to improvise, and everyone says the funniest lines. Closest they have gotten to a live-action cartoon and thats thanks to Brad Bird who had only directed animated films up to this point. Perfect mix of spy antics and action, very heartfelt. The Burj Khalifa bit and the entire Dubai sequence as a whole is some of the best blockbuster filmmaking ever put to screen. Truly astonishing. Love love love this movie, I could watch it on repeat until the day I die. It is mindboggling the next 3 (and hopefully The Final Reckoning) are somehow better than this one, despite Ghost Protocol already being a modern blockbuster masterpiece. Smiled the whole time!

"I work for an agency... called the IMF."

"What's that stand for?"

"Impossible Mission Force."

Great movie that rocks. Kind of hard to hate on this when it has two of the greatest actoes to ever live going blow for blow. Phillip Seymour Hoffman i miss you so much. This one strikes a better balance between the action and the spy tension compared to the last one and I vibe with it a bit more since the story is far more personal. Love me an aggressively blue movie and this one really scratches that itch. This series really is amazing because this one is great and yet every single film that came after totally blows this one out of the water. And I have been saying it since the first teaser for The Final Reckoning, but my theory that the Rabbit's Foot is The Entity is holding firm.

"It's interesting - I used to have this professor at Oxford, okay? Doctor Wickham, his name was and he was, like, this massive fat guy, you know? Huge, big guy. We used to call him - you know, well, I won't tell you what we used to call him, but he taught biomolecular kinetics and cellular dynamics. And he used to sort of scare the underclassmen with this story about how the world would eventually be eviscerated by technology. You see, it was inevitable that a compound would be created which he referred to as the 'Anti-God'. It was like an accelerated mutator or sort of, you know, like a, an unstoppable force of destructive power, that would just lay waste to everything - to buildings and parks and streets and children and ice cream parlors, you know? So whenever I see, like, a rogue organization willing to spend this amount of money on a mystery tech, I always assume... it's the Anti-God. End-of-the-world kinda stuff, you know... But no, I don't have any idea what it is. I was just speculating."

Crazy watching the final arc of Andor then immediately throwing this on, even if its what Tony Gilroy intended. Whole cast is boring except for Cassian, who is now far and away the best part of the movie, obviously. The whole surrounding context somehow makes this film even sadder. Far too many modern blockbuster-isms for my liking, but it looks and sounds genuinely phenomenal. One of my favorite 3rd acts and endings ever really because deep down im a Star Wars nerd. Pretty good, albeit inconsistent film. High highs and low lows. Seriously why the fuck do the dudes from the Mos Eisley cantina show up in this, they might be a contender for most egregious Glup Shitto in all of Star Wars.

I think this movie looks amazing most of the time, but it really sticks out like a sore thumb in the franchise. Fun to see it has shooters, but I am not one of them. Feels far more James Bond than Ethan Hunt, but not in a good way especially since this one is pretty misogynistic. 3rd Act action goes crazy, so many hype moments, so much aura. Least engaging plot, least interesting characters (Ethan doesnt feel like Ethan in this one), but at the end of the day I am charmed by this one. Sorta mindboggling this even exists? Trey Edward Shults putting up Lebron numbers when it comes to be an untalented hack and I have only seen two of his films now. Its like they captured lightning in a bottle for me specifically. Genuinely so hard to contain my laughter in the silent theater. Beau Is Afraid was the best theater experience of my life. Saw it on a tuesday at like 1pm. 2 other people were there and didnt even make it an hour in. I sat there alone losing my mind. Paced up and down the aisle for the entirety of the credits. Core memory.

I have begun my MCU rewatch because its been many years since I have seen most of these movie. Most I saw before getting into film and studying it. Instead of constantly shifting my current list as i rewatch, im making a new dedicated list that will replace my current one upon completion. Itll be fun to compare this list to my old one to see how much has changed. I will be watching in release order until im caught up. At the time of starting this list, Cap 4 has just released so im curious to also see how long this rewatch takes me.

  1. Iron Man 3
  2. Guardians of the Galaxy
  3. Captain America: The First Avenger
  4. Thunderbolts*
