Screening on June 7 is Jim Henson’s 1986 fairytale, LABYRINTH. A box-office flop on initial release, the film found its audience as young Millennials perpetually rewatched it on VHS. Jennifer Connelly stars as a lonely, restless teenager who feels stifled by her family. In a regretful moment, Connelly wishes her baby brother to vanish, a request that David Bowie’s Jareth the Goblin King is all too happy to grant. Now, with the clock ticking, Connelly must navigate the Goblin King’s labyrinth to rescue her little brother before he is transformed into one of Jareth’s minions.
Tommy Wiseau’s THE ROOM screens June 14. If you have not experienced THE ROOM at the Drexel, you don’t know what you’re missing. The loyal fans have created their own live experience à la THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. They’re always excited to indoctrinate newbies into the cult of Wiseau. A Drexel tradition for 16 years, THE ROOM is a gonzo masterpiece.
On June 21, we present XANADU, a wacky movie that could not exist in any other year except 1980. Coming off the massive success of GREASE, Olivia Newton-John stars as Kira, a daughter of Zeus who has come to Earth to serve as a muse for frustrated painter Sonny (THE WARRIORS’ Michael Beck). Meanwhile, an old entertainer (legendary dancer Gene Kelly) befriends Sonny and begins to believe Kira was the same muse that inspired him to become an orchestra leader in the 1940s. The trio come together to restore a former entertainment palace called Xanadu while trying to find a way for Kira to stay with Sonny on Earth forever. XANADU features a magical soundtrack containing songs from Newton-John and Electric Light Orchestra.
Finally, the Drexel presents the first double feature it has done in many years. On June 28, we’re screening BREAKIN’ and BREAKIN’ 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO back-to-back for one special ticket price! BREAKIN’ stars Adolfo “Shabba Doo” Quiñones and Michael “Boogaloo Shrimp” Chambers as Ozone and Turbo, two street entertainers who welcome ballet phenom Kelly (Lucinda Dickey) into their dance troupe. When the troupe enters a major competition, it’s going to take Kelly’s discipline and Turbo and Ozone’s fresh moves to beat their adversaries and escape their mundane lives. BREAKIN’ 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO sees the trio returning with even sicker moves than before. The greedy Mr. Douglas (Peter MacLean) wants to demolish the community rec center and build a strip mall. Can Turbo, Kelly and Ozone summon the courage and rad dancing skills needed to stop Mr. Douglas’ evil plan? This double feature is presented with a ten-minute intermission featuring 80s movie trailers.
