When a young boy makes a wish at a carnival machine to be big—he wakes up the following morning to find that it has been granted and his body has grown older overnight. But he is still the same 13-year-old boy inside. Now he must learn how to cope with the unfamiliar world of grown-ups including getting a job and having his first romantic encounter with a woman.

watching this movie for the first time in 2018 is BONKERS. i really dug it but soooo much of the comedy is actually horrifying and so much of the sentimentality is actually hilarious. what a trip.
there's a scene where tom hanks walks into his mom's house after he's been magically ahed and she freaks out and backs away, whispering "please don't please don't please don't" as a strange man she doesn't recognize walks towards her screaming "it's me, i'm your son"
also, when they eventually remake this movie (let me write it) i hope it exists in a universe where the movie Big is a thing and the kid wakes up as the older version of himself and immediately thinks "oh fuck. I think I got Big'd"

I hate this film for confronting me with the fact that I'm old.

Tom Hanks gives one of the best comedy performances ever. Whenever I am subjected to one of those awful comedies that get shat out these days I'll just watch that piano scene again to get it out of my system.

The funniest thing in the world in 1988 was imagining a manchild.
I love how I've got no problem with a kid who magically grows into an adult overnight but then I spend the rest of the movie getting hung up on the practical stuff. A simple scene like the one where he excitedly cashes his small-fortune-for-a-kid $187 paycheck had me yelling at the screen like a crazy person: "A minute ago he didn't even know what a social security number was! Wait, what's that card he showed the bank teller as ID? How did he even fill out his W-4?!" I'm weird, and no fun to watch movies with.
