Man. Damien Chazelle really loves his jazz, man. Also I know it’s like really amateurish and low budget but why does this have a 3.0 average rating? I really liked it idk
of course damien chazelle’s first film was a jazzy black and white 16mm mumblecore musical
I can't fathom how insufferable Chazelle's college parties must have been if both his theater buddies and his jazz buddies were there.
This has more ambition than its talent can possibly live up to, but it’s an invigorating experience nonetheless. When is the last time you saw a film that combined in-your-face, Cassavetes intimacy with full-blown musical production numbers? The writing-directing debut of Damien Chazelle, this began as a student project and finishes as something that still has rough, film-school edges (fumbling camerawork, unsteady performances, a stretched narrative even at 84 minutes). Yet the movie, which is an impressionistic remembrance of a romance between a jazz trumpeter (Jason Palmer) and a graduate student (Desiree Garcia), also provides a handful of promising La La Land premonitions (not least because composer Justin Hurwitz would expand on some of the same musical themes that he first offered here). And it should be noted that the ending, involving an extended Palmer trumpet solo, is just about perfect.
when i heard the la la summer montage melody in those opening titles i damn well leapt into the damn air
imagine thinking there's a more iconic duo than damien chazelle and justin hurwitz?? so glad i can't relate
As someone who loved Whiplash and La La Land, I really like Damien Chazelle’s work. But and it’s a big one, this was shockingly bad.
I gave it the benefit of the doubt at first, but so much about this movie sucks. It contains an non-existent story, boring dialogue, lack of character development, random characters and subplots, bad writing and awful cinematography. It feels like someone else took over to direct the film. Also, you have to watch the movie with subtitles because it’s hard to hear the dialogue. It was so bad that there were no subtitles when the musical numbers appear, which was even worse. What were they thinking?!
Justin Hurwitz’s music is pretty good. The restaurant and…
Literally couldn't imagine being 24 and making a whole ass movie.
It was definitely fun watching what can be basically be 'La La Land' lite. But I'd rather watch 'La La Land'.
Damien sure loves his jazz. Solid debut, but probably his worst movie.
