"A bit of self-pity's OK, but it's time to move on. There'll be pain, but that's life. You have to face it head-on. Be brave."

Grace Pudel (Sarah Snook), a young girl with a cleft lip, lives with her twin brother Gilbert (Kodi Smit-Mhee) and her father in Melbourne during the 1970s. Grace loves collecting snails, just like her late mother, and also dreams of becoming an animator like her father. When tragedy strikes, Grace is separated from her brother ...

Memoir of a Snail is a stop motion animated dark comedy drama film written and directed by Adam Elliot.

Elliot's film is a beautifully and meticulously crafted stop motion movie, which mixes darkly comedic elements with the drama.

Narrated by Sarah Snook's Grace Pudel, it tells the characters life story, with countless tragedies piling up, and many eccentric characters Grace meets along the way, while Snook's gloomy and melancholic voice over narration is a delight to listen to.

Memoir of a Snail is an R-rated film, containing nudity, sex and mature themes, although the animation style tones it down. While Grace has a lot of trials and tribulations going through, her story is also hopeful and touching, with many profound observations which will make you nod in agreement.

In conclusion, Memoir of a Snail is a gloomy, yet uplifting, and also very heartfelt and moving comedy drama, with gorgeous stop motion animation.
