An immediate horror classic. No it’s not perfect, but it has some sequences, man. Excellent performances (notably from the lead Sophie Wilde who is an absolute tour de force here) elevate a somewhat standard horror flick.

I LOVE THESE MOVIES!

It was so fun, a euphoric crowd pleaser that is twisty, turny, and incredibly fun. Imaginative kills, incredible goofy but earnest premise all throughout. 

And, man. What a stinger.

Engaging, thrilling, wholly unique.

I wish the marketing hadn’t spoiled the premise so much, but even so the whole thing is anchored by great performances and direction. 
Funny when it needs to be funny, tense when it needs to be tense, and just flat out undeniable. 

Exceedingly easy to recommend!

I love this movie but I can’t imagine taking someone who has never seen it before to the theatre to watch it. In so many places it is stilted and wooden and weird. 

Taking off the nostalgia goggles, it’s really not a very well made movie, the pacing is bizarre, the dialogue is mostly pretty awful. 

But it is still thematically very rich and an absolute visual feast!

Ultimate Edition

Idk man, I know it’s not very good but I still enjoy it. Something keeps bringing me back. 

I distinctly watching the theatrical cut when it was released and despising it. Like, the strongest I’d ever felt about a movie being bad up until that point. 

But the Ultimate Cut, in tandem with ZSJL, kind of works for me? Maybe it’s just the perfect Sunday afternoon movie where I can do other stuff while it’s playing. That’s part of it, I’m sure. But it’s nevertheless compelling.

Not perfect, but I think Snyder’s best instincts shine through.

Ben Affleck is just so sad

Honestly pretty good for a cop flick, but the found footage elements are straight up incoherent and I have no idea what it’s trying to say. 

Other than that, though, it is a thrillingly raw portrait of two LA cops with a good amount of heart and some truly exceptional acting. 

Ayer has a good script but the direction falls flat - it would’ve been nice if anyone besides the two main characters were developed AT ALL. But every moment we spend with them is so effectively brought to life by Peña and Gyllenhaal I can’t complain too much, they did great work.

FUCK another banger

This is a really fun flick, with heart, and a cast that is having a blast and chewing the scenery. It doesn’t overstay its welcome which I was afraid it might, but it makes excellent use of its runtime. 

Really well paced, well directed, well acted - easy to recommend.

Its so dumb but I love it

Eh idk pacing was weird, story was scattered. Characters were super cute! Just wish I saw in it what y’all are seeing.

A damn good time!

Not terribly scary, but I really dug it thematically and it is genuinely hysterical. Theo James does great work. 
The script is super tight & the direction is on point - would watch again.

A prefect script, spot-on direction, incredible performances. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Ryan Gosling steals the show. Great movie with a lot of heart and very very funny.

Really fun, twisty romp with a great cast, commentary, and a premise that keeps on delivering.

I’m still processing it and I feel like I will be processing it for a long time

Undoubtedly an opus & an awe-inspiring achievement that is the total summation of the forms that make up film. It’s beautiful to look at, the sound and score are incredible and weighty, the set design, the architecture, the acting, the writing, the pacing… and yet it’s still somehow feels like more than the sum of its parts.

The film itself identifies very strongly with its main character in that it is always reaching and yearning, and aspiring to create something great and lasting and moving. It is also a tremendous indictment of the immigrant experience and the American dream as a concept, deconstructing how the hand that feeds also bites and steals and exploits.

It’s a very long movie and at times, perhaps leans too far into suffocating under its own sense of scale and self importance, but the atmosphere is impeccable and I can’t say that I was ever bored. 

I just wish I had gotten to see it on an IMAX screen, but this is a truly impeccable film that I think it’s going to age tremendously.

It’s not Hilary Swank’s fault that that’s how they wrote her character. 

Had me in the first half, but the third act really let me down as it all just meandered sadly into predictability. Good performances and indicators of Nolan’s strengths, but he didn’t fulfill the promise of what his highs could be until much later in his career.

Dumb fun cinema. Hartnett in his bag, everyone is clearly having a blast.

BEST ONE YET!

Stakes cranked to the absolute max, stunning set pieces, best use of the so far developed characters (though I was missing one Jeremy Renner…shame I don’t have a dedicated app to discuss this on). 

McQuarrie gets what this franchise is at its core, and it’s high-octane action where every other scene has me saying out loud “this is the coolest shit I’ve ever seen.”

Cruise is in top form. What’s not to love? Excited to watch the next one before Final Reckoning this summer.

Watching in release order for the first time, this is the best one yet

Doesn’t quite reach the personal investment into the main story that I had with MI:3, all in all it’s less personal but still appropriately twisty and chock-full of great setpieces.

Black is miscast, for sure, but there is such an undeniable mood & spectacle throughout that I can’t help but kinda love it.

Boyyy lemme tell ya PSH is one of the all-time greats, Tom Cruise is a goddamn movie star, and that JJ Abrams sure knows how to swing a camera around. 

It’s just so kinetic, even when some elements don’t hit, JJ pulls another rabbit out of the hat and you’re so dizzied and enthralled by his direction and the pacing of the action that you don’t have time to care. It’s on to the next thrilling sequence. 

I think that’s his biggest strength and simultaneously his biggest fault as a director, when you can see through it, it falls a little flat. But for those moments that he does have you in the palm of his hand, it’s pure movie magic.
