Ballerina delivers a serviceable yet predictable expansion of the John Wick universe, anchored by Ana de Armas’ physically committed but emotionally undercooked turn as vengeance-driven assassin.

While her combat sequences—infused with balletic precision and gritty stamina—showcase the film’s inventive choreography and striking production design, the thinly sketched script reduces her arc to a series of routine revenge beats, lacking the emotional weight or narrative complexity.

De Armas has to shoulder a story that never quite justifies its stakes or her character’s inner turmoil.

Still, it is a visceral action showcase with sleek visuals and kinetic fight sequences.

Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme delivers a meticulously crafted, quintessentially Andersonian experience while deftly avoiding the pitfalls of self-parody that sometimes haunt auteur-driven movies.

The film’s sprawling Mediterranean-Balkan-inspired universe – a kaleidoscope of pastel-hued consulate offices, labyrinthine hotel corridors, and precisely choreographed harbor vistas – overwhelms the senses in the best possible way, though its density risks alienating viewers craving narrative simplicity.

While the director’s trademark deadpan delivery and recursive dialogue patterns initially charm with their mathematical precision, these verbal cadences gradually calcify into a suffocating rhythm that leaves emotional beats feeling airless in the final act.

What ultimately elevates the work is Anderson’s courageous expansion of his visual vocabulary, particularly in a breathtaking stop-motion sequence.

This imperfect yet enthralling mosaic proves the director still has new stories to tell within his instantly recognizable aesthetic framework.

Director Fleischer Camp delivers a respectfully faithful take on the beloved animated classic, bringing together a solid human cast with a delicate directorial approach that honors the original's spirit.

While the film succeeds in capturing much of what made the source material special, it never quite matches the visual clarity and emotional brightness that made the animated version so memorable.

The movie feels like it's missing a key narrative element that was central to the original story, leaving some plot threads feeling underdeveloped or rushed.

However, the animated Stitch absolutely steals the show with his mischievous charm and perfectly captures the alien's chaotic energy that fans fell in love with.

Lilo & Stitch is a charming and heartfelt animated film that beautifully explores the meaning of family through the unique bond between a lonely Hawaiian girl and a mischievous alien.

The soft, watercolor-style backgrounds perfectly capture the island’s atmosphere, adding a soothing visual touch that complements the story’s warmth.

The film balances humor and emotion skillfully, portraying the struggles of Lilo and her sister Nani in a way that feels genuine and relatable without becoming overly sentimental.

The theme of ohana—that family means no one gets left behind—resonates deeply, especially as the characters learn to accept and each other despite their flaws.

Watching it again as an adult makes the film hit even harder, reminding us why it remains a beloved Disney classic that’s both fun and profoundly moving.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning delivers a gripping start thick with labyrinthine espionage intrigue, setting the stage for Tom Cruise’s most audacious physical feats yet—including a white-knuckle aerial duel that redefines death-defying spectacle.

While the film’s breakneck final act ties the series’ overarching narrative into a satisfying crescendo, it also feels like a natural endpoint for Ethan Hunt’s legacy, bowing out before the formula risks stagnation - after it found again its footing with McQuarrie.

Amid the chaos, Tramell Tillman shines as the shrewd, dryly witty submarine Commander, injecting every scene with scene-stealing charisma. He is my breakout star since Severance.

Though the emotional beats occasionally play second fiddle to set pieces, the sheer technical mastery cement this as deserved farewell—one that proves even AI villains can’t outrun sheer human grit (or Cruise’s stubborn refusal to age).

Just like Ethan Hunt himself, I couldn't resist diving back into another impossible mission, and Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise have absolutely delivered another mind-blowing spectacle that left me on the edge of my seat.

The action sequences are genuinely breathtaking and the personal stakes for our beloved IMF team feel more intense than ever, proving once again that McQuarrie knows how to craft meaningful action that serves the story rather than just existing for cheap thrills.

What makes this entry so compelling is how the director maintains his signature clarity in action choreography while ramping up both the emotional investment and physical danger for characters we've grown to love over seven films.

However, I have to it that the decision to split this story into two parts still feels somewhat frustrating as a viewer - while I understand McQuarrie's reasoning about needing space for the expanded cast and complex narrative, it's still tough to accept a cliffhanger ending when you're completely invested.

That said, after witnessing the incredible spectacle and emotional depth of this installment again, I'm absolutely buzzing with anticipation for Mission Impossible - The Final Reckoning to see how this epic concludes.

Emilie Blichfeldt’s The Ugly Stepsister offers a darkly humorous reimagining of Cinderella, centering Elvira’s grotesque quest for beauty in a society obsessed with perfection.

The film’s strength lies in its biting satire of unrealistic beauty standards, punctuated by absurdly grim moments-think tapeworm weight loss and DIY plastic surgery-that balance shock with dark comedy.

While the premise is inventive and the visuals stylishly macabre, the pacing stumbles in the second act, lingering too long on Elvira’s self-destructive spiral without advancing the narrative.

Though marketed as a visceral horror spectacle, the actual gore feels restrained compared to the trailer’s promises, leaning more on psychological discomfort than outright carnage.

Martha: Everybody's in danger, Eunice.

I'm Still Here is a heart-wrenching masterpiece that left me breathless, with Fernanda Torres delivering a performance so powerful it feels like a knife to the chest.

The film's portrayal of a family's struggle under Brazil's military dictatorship is deeply moving, evoking a lump in the throat from start to finish.

Despite its emotional impact, knowing the true story has already unfolded somewhat tempers the experience.

While I'm Still Here is undeniably compelling, The Seed of the Sacred Fig resonated with me more, making it my personal Oscar favorite.

The film is unflinching in its portrayal of heartless moments, yet it serves as a powerful act of bearing witness to those often overlooked.

Mickey Barnes: Our entire life is a punishment.

Bong Joon-ho's Mickey 17 is a mind-bending sci-fi adventure that goes far beyond mere political satire.

The film's ingenious concept of "human printing" serves as a springboard for exploring the essence of humanity and the boundaries of ethical treatment.

Robert Pattinson delivers a captivating performance as Mickey, whose repeated deaths and revivals push the limits of what it means to be human.

While Bong's signature critique of social injustice is present, the film surprisingly balances it with a touching romantic subplot and an unexpectedly hopeful outlook on the future.

Despite some chaotic moments, Mickey 17 is a wildly entertaining and thought-provoking ride that will likely become a cult favorite for its sheer audacity and originality.

Leonie Benesch delivers an amazing performance as Floria, capturing the vulnerability and resilience of her character with remarkable nuance.

The film's realism is its strongest asset, providing a visceral portrayal of the high-stakes environment nurses operate in, which powerfully underscores the film's message about the underappreciated nursing profession.

Love Hurts is a mixed bag by first-time director Jonathan Eusebio, a seasoned stuntman, who excels at crafting engaging fight scenes, but struggles with managing the film's overly complex narrative.

The script, penned by three writers, becomes bogged down in unnecessary exposition and convolutions, making it hard to follow.

Bob Dylan: Your songs are like an oil painting at the dentist's office.

A Complete Unknown is a solid film that follows the familiar path of a musical biopic, balancing fidelity to Bob Dylan's story with a consistent, though somewhat predictable, narrative.

While it captures the essence of Dylan's rise in the 1960s folk scene, it doesn't delve as deeply as it could into his complexities.

The cinematography and pacing are well-executed, maintaining a steady flow that keeps viewers engaged, even if it doesn't break new ground.

Overall, it's an enjoyable watch, especially for Dylan fans, but it plays it safe rather than pushing boundaries.

As the curtain falls on my cinematic journey through 2023, it's a tapestry woven with the heartfelt reunion in "Past Lives," the serene solitude of "Perfect Days," the profound complexities of Oppenheimer's atomic odyssey, the emotional whirlwind of "The Whale," and the mind-bending multiverse of "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”.

“Anatomy of a Fall" delivers a gripping courtroom drama, "How to Have Sex" provides a nostalgic yet enlightening and frightening summer vacation, and "Godzilla Minus One" roars with post-war echoes. "The Beasts" explores rural clashes, "The Creator" crafts an underrated sci-fi gem, while "Barbie" amusingly navigates existential crises. Finally, Yorgos Lanthimos's "Poor Things" serves up a quirky tale that leaves a delightful imprint.

In this cinematic odyssey, I've sailed through genres, surfed emotional waves, and emerged with a treasure trove of memories from the silver screen. Cheers to the stories that unfolded, the characters that lingered, and the magic that cinema bestowed upon my 2023.

“And with that the 2022 season… comes to an end.
Good Night!”

I always struggle a bit with my lists of movies and rankings. Mostly I am influenced by recency and genre bias but yeah it’s my taste, rating, ranking and recommendation.

2022 didn’t went of with a real good start. Because of a little scare stayed the first week in isolation and ‘rona struck me down in the mid of this year. So I got a good chunk of entertainment in. Win or loose you can decide.

On another note: I know it’s not easy with multiple crisis in our life to your local cinemas or the movie industry. But I personally think of it as an escape and that’s why will continue ing it.

Without further ado:

My top 3 movies from the big screen and more…
Time to talk about the best of the year. Movies have to touch me, make me think about myself and society. Simply being a bombastic colorful starstruck blockbuster doesn’t cut it any more. But if you are also able to combine it:

Everything Everywhere All At Once

What an explosion of ideas, creativity, heart and cleverness. In itself it wasn’t the newest idea but in this originality it was easily my favorite watch this year.

Aftersun

In the days following my watch you could say that I was haunted by this beautiful feature debut. My review says it all. Simply great and I can’t wait to have a rewatch.

The Banshees of Inisherin

What a great dark comedy. I can’t what I was expecting but I was blown away by what I could see. It’s a great thing that I could see this one early at the Hamburg Filmfest, so that I’ll be able to enjoy it once more 2023 on the big screen.

My complete list for the big screen: 2022🎞️

My top 3 movies from the small screen and more…
As already mentioned there where times that I was confined to my home.
So yeah, my best from the small screen.

In the Mood for Love

What is love? And what is if you find it in another person than you thought? The coloring, the dialogue and the movie in whole did mesmerizing.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

I suspect foul play! And this is dumb! Give me more Blanc. There not much more to say.

Paddington 2

It’s the simplicity and I loved it.

My complete list for the small screen: 2022📺

My top 3 series that I watched 2022
Besides movies I want also point out three of my favorite tv shows.

Andor

Being a fan of multiple genres and franchises can easily end you up in fatigue for certain productions. And as you can see, here will be no mention of The Book of Boba Fett or Kenobi. No, Andor ist the production that reignited my not yet gone out love for Star Wars! Must see.

Severance

Holy cow! This is a twisted and great piece of television. I was really hooked and can from the bottom of my heart recommend this series. Can’t wait for the second season.

The Bear

Unfortunately with distribution rights I wasn’t able to see Boiling Point. So I was very delighted to have been able to watch this gem. It is a roller coaster ride and really great.

Honorable mentions are:
Better Call Saul
•Bad Sisters
•The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
•House of the Dragon
•Barry
•Slow Horses
•Wednesday
•Industry
•Little America

My 2023 most highly anticipated movies
Last but not least my picks for 2023. I’m excited and hope to see real good work.

In times of so much availability without real information what to come, I’ll like to show my top 10 picks for 2023 in hope to see as many of them in the cinema. Hopefully there won’t be too many delays or distribution issues…

  • Oppenheimer

"Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."

Just two weeks ago the trailer “dropped” and I am so much sold for this movie! Right now there isn’t any other film I am more excited about.

The cast is stellar, it’s a Nolan movie and also a historic science drama?! Do I have to say anything more?

  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Haha, let’s copy last years text?! No, watch the trailer and tell me you are not excited!

  • Asteroid City

Hust… Wes Anderson… do I have to say more?

  • The Fabelmans

I am very intrigued by the first trailer and the premise of being a semi-biographical story. Give me the origin story of one of the greatest directors of mine!

  • Dune: Part Two

After last years stellar grand movie, I anticipate a great movie!

  • Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning

I already was excited last year about this one… so give me Ethan Hunt!

  • Barbie

Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie and a first great homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Take my money!

  • Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Growing up with the trilogy and actively discarding the so called 4th installment I am curious about the possible end of Ford’s tenure as Indy.

  • 65

I love the premise and try not to watch or read any more information about this. Excitement is high and expectations also, thanks Adam Driver.

  • Babylon

Okay, here I copy last year:
I definitely have a soft spot for Jazz and also musicals and I count Chazelles‘ Whiplash to my top 20 movies. So this sounds very interesting.

Definitely will watch it in January.

Top 9 movies I watched at the cinema in 2022 so far.

  1. The Batman

Batman: “Our scars can destroy us, even after the physical wounds have healed. But if we survive them, they can transform us. They can give us the power to endure, and the strength to fight.”

    my review

  2. C'mon C'mon

Jesse: “That's very stupid. You're just the stupidest stupid person, ever, like. You have the lesser brain capacity than an actual deceased dead person.”

    my review

  3. The Worst Person in the World

Narrator: “She said she was terrified of being alone. Terrified of living without him. That when she left, she'd be like Bambi on the ice. And that was precisely why she had to do it. Aksel mumbled soothing words she didn't hear. She was thinking about how, at the age of 30, she'd just compared herself to Bambi.”

    my review

  4. Red Rocket

Mikey: “What did the donuts do on their first date?”
    Strawberry: “I don't know.”
Mikey: “They glazed into each other's eyes.”
Strawberry: “That's so stupid. But I can't believe I haven't heard that one.”
Mikey: “Well, I wrote it. You couldn't have heard. I kind of write donut jokes on the side. It's one of my many talents.”

    my review

  5. Petite Maman

    Nelly: “I’ve made a friend, I think.”

    my review

  6. The Northman

Seeress: “ for whom you shed your last teardrop.”

    my review

  7. Top Gun: Maverick

Rear iral: “The end is inevitable, Maverick. Your kind is headed for extinction.”

Maverick: “Maybe so, sir. But not today.”

    my review

  8. Paris, 13th District

Émilie: “Can I ask you a question?”

    my review

  9. A Hero

Rahim Soltani: “Mr. Taheri, delete it!”

Snippets of my reviews for the 2022 Oscar Best Picture nominees. For winning I predict CODA😍

  • CODA

“I love this movie. It really choked me up to see the “struggles” of the misunderstood family with themselves and in interaction with other people. It is really sweet and gives you warm feelings. Shining the light on other communities, as also did Sound of Metal, is important and this movie shows it in a beautiful way. I didn’t expect that this movie has a predecessor from . I’ll make sure to catch this one too.”

    thoughts/review

  • Belfast

“There probably isn’t a world in which this film isn’t going to receive a lot of Oscar nominations, and they would be well-deserved. It’s a lovely little film and a charming slice of life I’ll be keen to revisit.”

    thoughts/review

  • The Power of the Dog

“I am not a really big fan of typical westerns. Give me a space opera and the theme is fine for me. This one did it for me nevertheless. Cumberbatch’s and his co-star performances did intrigued me and were a the whole time the core for me to still be interested in this. Although, like other westerns, I found it a bit slow.”

    thoughts/review

  • Dune

“While this film already feels like an achievement, there is no guarantee of the fact that it’s only half the story. If Part Two never happens, it’ll be a travesty.” - good that we’ll get a second part🤩

    thoughts/review

  • Drive My Car

“This movie is so layered and therefore also long but I wasn’t at any point not intrigued not to continue.”

    thoughts/review

  • West Side Story

“I had chills at numerous points throughout. Some pure cinematic magic at times, from a cinematic legend giving us another gem, five decades after first dazzling the world with his ideas. We can't take this for granted.”

    thoughts/review

  • Licorice Pizza

“Seriously I think I am in love with Alana Haim after this. Like Hoffman I am just stunned by her but I am also envious of his audacity to talk to her like that in their opening scene.”

    thoughts/review

  • King Richard

“This movie has it all. Especially Smith portraits Mr. Williams plays him formidable and immersed himself in this role. It’s his best role in years.”

    thoughts/review

  • Nightmare Alley

“A rare del Toro film that’s not an outright spook show, Nightmare Alley isn’t quite the filmmaker’s best — but it’s not far off, boasting an enveloping atmosphere, compelling characters, and gorgeous filmmaking.”

    thoughts/review

  • Don't Look Up

“I was really struggling with this one:
I am a big fan of McKays work and also the topic or better the metaphor of this film is so good and interesting.
But I really struggled with the cast/ensemble. It didn’t click for me. So thumbs up for the theme but also low point for chemistry of the cast.”

In times of so much availability without real information what to come, I’ll like to show my top 20 picks for 2022 in hope to see as many of them in the cinema. Hopefully there won’t be too many delays for obvious reasons…

  1. The Northman

After The VVitch and The Lighthouse I am very interested to see what Eggers does with Nothern mythology. Also the cast, a definitely yes for me.

  2. The Batman

Yes, another iteration of Batman. But this one is the darkest yet. This Bruce Wayne is moody, dark and it’s being told that the idea is to model him after Kurt Cobain. So yes, another Batman that I am excited for.

  3. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

I won’t excuse my choice for so many super hero / comic movies. I adored the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, it’s definitely in my top 20 of all time.

  4. Licorice Pizza

I‘ll have to say this pick made it because of recency bias. Sadly I had to cancel my preview screening for 2021. But now I am hyped for it in 2022. probably another hit by Paul Thomas Anderson.

  5. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Multiverses here we go. First official entry for Marvel Studios and I think I don’t have to explain my anticipation for it.

  6. Thor: Love and Thunder

Give me the Love, give me Thunder! Give me the weirdness and the fun of Taika Waititi!

  7. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

After the first one and sadly after the ing of Chadwick Boseman I am deeply interested what Ryan Coogler will present us.

  8. Babylon

I definitely have a soft spot for Jazz and also musicals and I count Chazelles‘ Whiplash to my top 20 movies. So this sounds very interesting.

  9. Everything Everywhere All at Once

The topic of the ending 2021 and 2022 will definitely be multiverses. This movie has a very interesting premise and the trailer is wild!

  10. C'mon C'mon

Do I have to say something else then Joaquin Phoenix?!

People ask me why I go that often to the movies. The answer is simple. It is art and Zeitgeist in which we can escape and widen our horizons at the same time.

Also switching off my phone and take everything completely in is amazing.

2021 was still a great year although I had to watch some on the small screen at home. We all know why (2020 et alii…)

I always struggle a bit with my lists of movies and rankings. Mostly I am influenced by recency and genre bias but yeah it’s my taste, rating, ranking and recommendation.
So without further ado:

My top 3 movies from the big screen and more…
Time to talk about the best of the year. In recent times movies have to touch me, make me think about myself and society. Simply being a bombastic colorful starstruck blockbuster doesn’t cut it any more.

Promising Young Woman

This movie stuck with me really long and does still effect me by going through life. Being the good guy isn’t good enough. The system has to change and stories have to be told.

Belfast

„Be good. And if you can’t be good, be careful!“ - it’s a heartful film that is definitely a feel-good-movie in an unsettling time. I am really happy that I could have seen it at the Hamburg Filmfest and so you and I have the opportunity to see it next year when it is commercially released.

Spider-Man: No Way Home

19 years ago the superhero genre got a new chance in the pictures with Spider-Man. Besides Superman and Batman almost everyone knows and can relate to Spider-Man. A kid that becomes a superhero wearing a mask so it could be anybody. Spider-Man: No Way Home gives you are heartfelt depiction of exactly what it means to give people a second chance and what it means to be a hero.

My complete list for the big screen: 2021🎞

My top 3 movies from the small screen and more…
The first half of 2021 we all were „banned“ from the cinema. So yeah, our escape was the small screen.

The Mitchells vs. The Machines

This movie was simply awesome. An animated coming of age-story with well known family struggles and all of that at the same time of an apocalyptic event; do you knew more convincing?

CODA

Did I already speak of my genre bias? Family struggles and coming of age-stories? Here I am! This movie was amazing.

In the Heights

Musicals are also a pet peeve for me. And Lin-Manuel Miranda had quite a year. Critiques already cry that it is almost too much. For me, keep it coming. Colorful and vibrant.

My complete list for the small screen: 2021📺

My top 3 series that I watched 2021
Besides movies I want also point out three of my favorite tv shows.

WandaVision

Marvel had definitely a year in my viewings this year. A show that deals with grief and with the concept of tv shows?! Yes. Also Loki and Hawkeye impressed me immensely. Also a big plus I really enjoyed this show watching it weekly with friends and then discuss it.

Succession

Holy cow! Another family struggle for me but immensely over the top. This satirical depiction of the 1% of the 1% hits differently.

Legal Affairs

Yes, a German production is also to be found in my 2021 review. It is fresh, strongly written and keeps you engaged. I hope it will picked up again and continued.

My 2022 most highly anticipated movies
Last but not least my picks for 2022. I’m excited and hope to see real good work.
