“Our entire life is a punishment”

In retrospect, it is evident why the final cut and thus release was a major obstacle and setback because Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 is somewhat of a monstrous disaster. The options of cutting this down and losing whatever narrative this has to say, or adding in material and ballon this up even more losing screens at the Cineplex and watch it blossom up its own derrière.…

“Me go fuck myself? Me fuck myself? You go fuck yourself and your fucking mother, motherfucker!”

Women in Film [2025]

Baker’s Anora is a superbly crafted, dramatically immersive and emotionally engaging hang-out that feels plucked straight out of the 1970s with arguably one of the best to watch Actresses in Mikey Madison. The greatest achievement here is the balance of tone, Baker at any minute shifts and pushes the audience - as well as the…

“I'll tell you what I told Tony Bennett. Sing songs people already know. That way they'll still have something to applaud”

Ishtar is nowhere near the supposed disaster or wreck it has been cemented as, not even close. It is a feature however, that has no narrative or script. Granted, this reading does somewhat help the nature of the beast in of plot and character but for flow and rhythm is near enough excruciating.…

“Why should you love him whom the world hates so?

Pride Month [2025]

Carson Timar has invited me back on to CLAPPERCAST to discuss Derek Jarman’s Edward II for Pride Month.  This is simplistic albeit truly effective artistic craft at its finest. Jarman elevates the material by using political and social overtones that intertwine from the text to its modern-day reach. The two in tangent offer a profound, poignant and damning sentiment of double standard and…

“Let the past die. Kill it, if you have to”

Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi is a bitterly disappointing, flat, tiresome, and ultimately disastrous attempt at wanting to stand out against the norm. The tone is completely utterly wrong for such a massively important episode in a franchise that needs to go darker and embrace it. It has no clue of what it wants to…

VENICE 2019

”Is it just me, or is it getting crazier out there?”

Phoenix is phenomenal. Dark, gritty & fucking crazy Joker is more on the lines of Mean Streets than Taxi Driver but is clearly heavily influenced on the latter. It all looks to be serving a masterclass, but Phillips stumbles in the last hurdle with the film not knowing if it wants to stand alone as its own entity or be enticed and constricted by the lore that surrounds it.
