“True bravery's being kind, even to those who are being cruel to you”

31 Days of Horror: TO HELL AND BACK - Hoop-Tober [2020]

Who would have thought in a drastic and morbid 2020 that Sandler’s immature and silly little Halloween tale might be the stupidest and warmest feature of that very same year. Hubie Halloween is nothing short of grand. It's sweet, silly and full of self referential ridiculousness, and much…

31 Days of Horror: TO HELL AND BACK - Hoop-Tober [2020]

It must be parenthesised that Deep Blue Sea 3 does absolutely nothing new regarding plot. For an overview, it is all very simple: the film follows a group of scientists that are caught up in tracking and, eventually, having to survive a herd of super-intelligent great white sharks. To that extent, if any viewer is hoping for a complete and utter reinvention of…

31 Days of Horror: TO HELL AND BACK - Hoop-Tober [2020]

The Oak Room shines with its intimacy and play-like aesthetic which, in hindsight, actually helps propel the atmosphere and tension ten-fold by focusing on characters and not the set piece. All in all, The Oak Room is a fantastic intimate thriller that holds its own weight against its bigger budgeted contemporaries and showcases RJ Mitte as one to watch.

31 Days of Horror: TO HELL AND BACK - Hoop-Tober [2020]

When Aitkenhead wants to bring the gauntlet down on the horror tropes, she does so in a blissfully excessive and all-engulfing fashion. There are specific sequences here that are terrifying to behold, specifically, in its final act, which oversteps the mark quite a few times in Nicolas Winding Refn style.

31 Days of Horror: TO HELL AND BACK - Hoop-Tober [2020]

Thankfully, both editing and screenplay do not mislead, and ultimately what Madeleine Sims-Fewer and Dusty Mancinelli have crafted here is a terrifically performed feature on the depths of trauma. Not only the social drowning of the truth but the physical and physiological repercussions of the very act done upon Sims-Fewer's Miriam.

TIFF 2020 - FIRST LOOK

31 Days of Horror: TO HELL AND BACK - Hoop-Tober [2020]

There are two sides to Wang's film: the horror and the political undertone, much in the same vein as George A. Romero's style and sensibility. Granted, while Romero's instances and political/social gravity of his films remain subtle but undeniably effective, I.-Fan Wang's sensibility is so incredibly wild and on-the-nose that it will come off for many as too tasteless and high pitched to be poignant or reflective.

31 Days of Horror: TO HELL AND BACK - Hoop-Tober [2020]

Anwar delivers chill after chill with spine chilling iconography and a remote setting akin to something out of Cannibal Holocaust. Granted, while the environment itself worms its way into the brain of the audience with its abrasive landscape and intimate features, it is the often cold but intoxicating mystery the begins to unfold that curates most of the film's scares.

31 Days of Horror: TO HELL AND BACK - Hoop-Tober [2020]

Utilising one setting of a swimming pool – or one individual setting, in general – is no easy feat to craft an engaging and entertaining thriller, but for the most part, Lumpraploeng creates an exciting atmosphere and tone to behold. Not only is the tension ramped up due to the isolated and cut-off setting, but it's the inclusion, and highlight, of an escapee Crocodile on the loose.
