almost certainly will need to rewatch this within the next few days to sink my teeth deeper into the themes presented (mortality, family, faith, political power), but upon first watch it’s nice to see Wes Anderson continue to perfect what he already does so well, while also trying some new things (cartoonish violence, Michael gd Cera, etc). 
really really enjoyed Threapleton, del Toro, and Cera! the title sequence and all of the heavenly tribunal scenes are honestly some all-timer stuff from Wes also imo.

hits just as hard the second time around!!! the pig scene at the mall just absolutely crushes me. our audience gasped so loud when Ivy Wolk first appeared on screen like it was a damn cameo in a Marvel movie!

I don’t think there’s a world where I don’t give this five stars, so here are the aforementioned stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

DeYoung and Robinson do something very special here, delivering an instant classic comical riot, but also such a devastating examination of the longing for kinship. it is equally dreadful as it is hilarious to see Craig navigate his everyday life, which I feel makes something like The Cable Guy such an apt choice for a double feature with this. much like Carrey during that era, I firmly believe Tim Robinson is the signature comedic actor of this current era and this film cements that. it’s great that we are all basically invited to see a full length I Think You Should Leave sketch on the silver screen and judging on how packed the theater was, it’s a great sign for comedy in cinema as well.

movie night at Cody’s :-)

an absolute triumph and piece of Americana that has firmly planted it’s feet as an all-timer still, 50 years down the line. such a feat to interconnect and weave together this many moving pieces, characters, set pieces, and storylines. what a soundtrack as well, listened to it the whole way home from the theater. my only gripe was that I could feel the runtime a little bit, but I still really enjoyed this one!

the scene where Henry meets Mary’s parents for the first time is exactly what it felt like to meet all my friend’s parents for the first time when I was little.

jumping up and down, grinning, clapping, and pointing every time a clip from the 21 Savage x Barry Lyndon fancam was on screen. 

one of the most visually stunning things put to celluloid. was worried I wouldn’t be as captivated by the story, but was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. everything after the intermission is actually quite the masterpiece imo.

I had honestly forgotten what it was like to walk into a superhero movie and just have some exciting, corny fun for a couple hours. this felt like a true return to form to the Marvel Studios of yesteryear, after subjecting us to a cavalcade of slop most recently.
Florence Pugh brings in emotionality like a pro and actually gives you a reason to care about these characters and their development, which again, was very refreshing for a Marvel movie!
the cast had great chemistry, it actually looks solid visually, and it’s humor felt more grounded and less forced than other entries in the MCU (I’m looking at you, dancing Deadpool). 
not the best in the MCU, but a huge step in the right direction!

this was a check off the bucket list for 10 year old me, who would get onto the Jay and Silent Bob Secret Stash website every single day and rewatch the Clerks cartoon dvd religiously. this has always been my favorite film in the View Askewniverse and seeing it’s restoration and hearing the man who made it talk about it, as well as different aspects of his career, was simply a delight. already looking forward to the 4K Steelbook to follow this re-release.

an undeniable masterpiece. Jimmy Stewart in his first ballot hall of fame baddie fumbler bag in this one.

PLEASEEE continue to blank check my guy Ryan Coogler, my god. I haven’t been this amped leaving the theater in quite some time. it’s so refreshing to see an original idea executed this well, with how rare it is nowadays. the technical craft and care put into this, the entire cast, the score/music, the effects. it’s all so. damn. good. there are so many sequences in this (especially that one) that had me open-mouth smiling in awe like a dweeb. the guy in front of me literally did the leaning forward/locked in meme during a pivotal part towards the end, deservedly so too. this is exactly the movie that general audiences and cinephiles alike need right now. best movie of the year so far. go and see it on an IMAX screen!

experiencing Chicken Jockey in real life was everything I dreamed it would be.

honestly, not terrible for a baby movie! Jared Hess bakes a little bit of Napoleon Dynamite into this, so I had some good chuckles. most fun I’ve had in a theater this year. WB’s gotta cut the check though for using Chuglass, that’s been in my lexicon for a minute now!!! 😤

seeing this, on my golden birthday, on a beautiful 70mm print, with my favorite people in the world, was beyond exquisite 😌

DDL’s hand acting in this is actually so incredible (hand raising to signify striking oil, the lazily thrown “go on” motion in front of the flaming derrick, throwing up 3 the hard way when talking about his successful oil producing wells, etc.) 
just something I laser’d in on this viewing for no reason lol
counting down the minutes until One Battle After Another already!!!

interesting how this movie finds it’s way into my life when I’m feeling glum. such a twisted comfort rewatch. seeing it on the big screen finally was a treat though. easily the best end credit sequence to date. David Lynch forever ❤️

world’s cutest crime syndicate

a fairly jarring experience, to say the least. much like AGGRO DR1FT, I still don’t believe it’s an indicator of the future of cinema, but it is certainly an interesting piece of media. feels like it’s a critique on modern streaming entertainment and the dangerous rabbit hole that lies within virtual immersion leading to detachment from reality, but idk. maybe it’s just the insane musings of someone who’s lost in the endless now. 
the Burial score absolutely rips.

the lens change on “but it did happen” is so fucking incredible, throws me every time!!! monumental film, PTA is just the absolute greatest.

I absolutely LOVE acclaimed directors taking big swings like this!!! not everything works in this film and it will be fairly divisive, so I can see why Warner Brothers were being babies about it’s release and marketing, but damn if I didn’t enjoy the hell out of it. it’s fun! Pattinson and Ackie knock it out of the park with their performances and I found myself invested in their relationship, especially in one particular scene between the two of them that really brings some humanity back to Mickey. it has such wide range of emotionality, which is to be expected in any Bong Joon-Ho film, and that makes for a silly, yet saddening experience. PLEASE do not let this film take a bath at the box office, I want more multi-million dollar esoteric films from our best filmmakers!!!

it is actual criminal that it took me almost a decade to see what I would consider one of the best films of the past 25 years. it is expertly written and directed, beautifully lit (understatement), incredible performances across the board, and some really cool sound design choices. great soundtrack also. still coming down from how special this flick was. and seeing it for the first time ever on an IMAX screen? exquisite.

Rory Scovel goated, put him in more comedies!!!

silly movie with like three different plots (wedding dramedy, family dramedy, and a rom com w/ NO juice) so it suffers from too many cooks syndrome. definite regression from Bros, but still has some genuine laughs. kinda feels like they put the governor on Jimmy Tatro, which feels odd to do when he’s so high on the bill and one of the funnier of the cast.

the Biscuit Burgler bit was genuinely one of the funniest bits I’ve seen in a minute
