Deadpool & Wolverine

LFG. I will keep this as much of a spoiler free review as possible and then I will dive more in depth when I rewatch this movie (as I will be doing so very soon without a doubt). I fucking loved this. This orgasmic behemoth of a movie is what makes marvel great, I should have worn my white pants. Not only suring my expectations and meeting nostalgia with a fine touch, this was nothing short of absolute fire for me. A becoming love letter/tribute to the 20th Century Fox Marvel age that is, like the previous Deadpool movies, self aware and introspective. As Kevin Feige said, the mutant era has officially started, and would I go as far to say that Marvel is back? I'm not quite sure about that but what I can say is it's definitely made promising moves with this. The cast and crew definitely put in so much work to this and you can see the ion bleeding out for this project, truly giving maximum effort.

Combining the merc with a mouth and the adamantium daddy, Marvel Jesus and Tiny Dancer, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman completely get what Deadpool and Wolverine are and what they mean to their audience as beloved characters. Both these actors are born to play these roles and as they provide depth, a strong dynamic and heart to these adaptions over years, you feel a bond to the narratives as a fan. You can definitely feel these two's off screen connection is infused within their chemistry on screen and it just makes it all the better. I really enjoyed the fresh new take on the character of Wolverine that gives a sense of ambiguity and mystique, whilst Wade reaches yet another level of will to sacrifice and a longing to do what's right, adding further development to his inner self. Both Reynolds and Jackman are fully committed and bring their all to these characters which we love to see.

This movie has one of the best opening sequences in Marvel and from then on I had nothing but a good time and a grin on my face with several bursts out of laughter as well as ‘oh shit’ moments too. You are provided with jaw-dropping action sequences that they do not hold back on at all, giving unique and gruesome kills along with a banging soundtrack that is inserted perfectly within each scene. There's such a large scale to this motion picture, full of gorgeous set pieces, that contains thrilling fan service where the cameos actually each have their purpose for the most part and are not just there for the sake of it or as a brief blip, which I am so glad for. Some of the cameos were expected and did complete justice to what I wanted them to be and then the others I didn't expect to see were such a treat, was there some cameos I wish had of been added? Sure, but I'm not greedy and was fully satisfied with what we receive. There's a lot of exposition too to assist audience who may not have seen previous Marvel projects that contain relative plots and themes, which actually I was okay with as it's pulled off very well in my opinion by a talented cast (though I would advise anyone to watch through these previous projects like Loki, Deadpool 2, the X-Men universe etc. to be fully locked in with this movie and benefit as much as possible). The end credits scene was also fantastic and that extra bit of humour to finish off the palate.

My only real gripes with Deadpool and Wolverine are that sometimes there can be a struggle to balance the emotional weight and tones they are going for due to so much going on so it becomes messy. And the antagonists can at times come across as flat with some questionable dialogue but for the most part the villains are charismatic yet formidable, giving superb performances. And for most of the movie you can connect with the pain and shifts in emotion so these issues didn't really affect my rating too much. The other thing that lets this down for me too but I could easily brush over, is that I’m just not a huge fan of Shawn Levy’s style of filmmaking when it comes to action and though I love his relationship off screen with Ryan and Hugh, maybe he needed an extra hand from someone more equipped to bring the right flair to this.

I am so so glad that I got to see this motion picture in IMAX 3D and my heart is content that I managed to finally get to see my two favourite comic book characters team up in comic accurate suits on the big screen. This has humour, anguish, savagery, heartache and R rated splendour. So much more to say as my brain is rattling still from just getting back from the cinema but I’ll save everything else for my next review on my rewatch which will most likely be early next week. An electric ride full of energy that I highly recommend for any Marvel fan to watch on the biggest screen possible as soon as you can. I cannot wait to rewatch this at least twice in IMAX. Fuck yeah.

Your little cinematic universe is about to change, forever!
