joke a minute fun! jokes about farts, haircuts, falling down, sumo diapers, white people’s interest in japanese tradition, fighting children, swinging your arms around funny— all the classic things we can laugh about. great audience, we all laughed and cheered.

i didn't totally know what i was getting into here and the answer (experimental-ish assemblage of old doc footage and scraps from other films, plus covid movie forming loose plot) is normally my nightmare but this was too fascinating and dynamic to dislike. or should i say, it had too much cool singing and dancing to dislike. whenever it wasn't about zhao tao, but about her idiot bf, i was a bit peeved. my mom is also a middle aged asian lady who is super charmed by delivery/restaurant robots, especially when they have cute eyes, so that scene really got me. i am also a sucker for time jumps!! interested to see how much this sticks with me.

finished rewatching yesterday morning before final reckoning. close up magic, fiat chase!!!, ilsa faust swordfight, wigham and tarzan running around trying to peel everybody’s faces off, pom in her sgt pepper’s coat, TRAIN SCENE!! this one’s still got it all for me, despite the Thing that happens that i’m still furious about. it’s so funny to be at the AI club with your 3 girlfriends.

moved to tears by tom cruise’s hatred of ai and “being online” and ethan hunt’s love of bad bitches. when ethan hunt ruins your life through his reckless rogue behavior, you may grow a Hot beard and marry the love of your life. i guess ilsa faust was not alive, and i do find that pretty unforgivable. also, i prefer a city set piece!! and i do not like submarines. doesn’t mean i wasn’t absolutely slick palmed gripping my seat and adam’s arm all throughout submarine + plane stuff. montage stuff is ??? president angela bassett 🫡 i guess i walked into this with low-normal expectations and i’m happy enough. what a crazy guy. see you at the movies :)

funny :) conner o’malley makes me laugh and laugh

weird movie full of such specifically 1981 archetypes that none of these people really feel like a type of person anymore? carol burnett and rita moreno (as an italian woman who keeps saying "i'm italian!") don't come close to saving this, much as i love them. hate to tell you the netflix reboot series is vastly better. why did i watch the netflix reboot of "the four seasons" you may ask? i was going through some stuff.

it’s the year of wasian horror!!!!!!!! it’s the year of the briones children!!! i was grinning so wide when i realized we’d be getting a 60s flashback opening disaster. the other day i told adam that my newest fear is that a bat will bite me and i won’t notice and some time later i’ll die of rabies, so you see, i really vibe with the final destination series which imagines the world as a series of looney tunes death traps. i’m also newly terrified of ring avulsion!!! thank god this was good.

i like how denzel wears a real HAT in this, and i like how this movie is awesome. i'm often so focused on the "chaiyya chaiyya" i forget how good the blanchard score is. new york is a beautiful town where everybody lives. you might meet evil fixer jodie foster or a gorgeous albanian woman who is bad at parking.

extra half star for the hat. actually, i don't have to explain myself. extra half star because i feel like it.

was gonna write something glib like, "boymomming can ruin your life" and leave it at that but i'm still crying really hard... one of a handful of shows i know deep deep deep in my bones. about every other time i see my mom, who i see every 3-6 months since we live on opposite coasts, she asks me point blank if i'm really not going to snap one day and it occurs to me that my parents have been waiting for my act 2 natalie meltdown all my life. well! i have it normaler than her btw, i just have a stressed personality. caissie levy has been important to me for 20 years and she's more booked and busy than ever.

cool flick 👍

there’s a shot in this movie of penelope cruz in a black bra doing her makeup in a mirror and when it happened i said “jesus christ” out loud. basically loved!!! cool movie, if slightly less cool than i thought midway through. every synopsis of this movie is understandably nuts. 

also, it’s almodovar summer.

doesn’t exactly work but really funny when it’s funny! i always like to see donald sutherland and elliot gould, the two hottest men i can think of.

a solid 4 scenes that make me want to throw up just thinking about them. great stuff.

not particularly good but jenny slate sings "suddenly, seymour"

hitting all my comfort movies this week i guess, mostly by happenstance. fun and insane to watch this with an audience that kept gasping at basic romeo and juliet plot points and cheered when tony and maria kiss? love that for everyone… janusz kaminski you are so important to me. you too, tony kushner. and i know you both love me specifically back because why else would you set i feel pretty in gimbels.

i guess the last time i watched this i was 24 years old, which feels wrong. it’s funny to watch this on the other end of 27 and feeling like s is so young and ing how i was also stupid and annoying in a lot of the same ways, although i never put an international flight on a credit card with no means to pay it back. there’s no better movie about nyc apartments. joel maisel hot and endearing in this.

not enough jokes, not enough wedding, not enough lily gladstone but it’s just so nice!!! little joan chen/youn yuh-jung moment is lovely, could’ve watched 20 minutes of that meal. my audience was loving this.

joe wright was right to spend 25% of his entire budget on birds

cool parts (dance scenes!!! blues!! irish jig! delroy lindo!! making a big swing like this in general!) outweigh the dumb parts. there are 2 scenes that truly knocked me out. also some of the dumb bits are pulpy and fun, only some of them are things like “the substance-esque visual reminders of thing that happened like 22 minutes ago to make sure you definitely ” and the MCU ass post credits sequence. the first end is so moving!!!! leave it!

even jesus christ himself had a wasian girlfriend 

basically a cool music video for one of my favorite musicals, what’s not to like. i usually skip the pontius pilate/herod songs but they were kinda the best part of this.

so many faces in this movie that make me laugh on sight. i want to say the first shot of leon vitali is top of the list but i don’t know… the smug british officer? murray melvin? that one gay guy barry gets into a sword match with? the huge baby? lot of competition. i gotta read thackeray this year….

i honestly forgot how much jesus is in this (with perfect hair), i only ed judah being gay and the chariot race. thought the leper stuff was 1 scene when it is in fact 45 insane extra minutes. chariot race is the best use of 6 billion dollars i’ve ever seen.

whole cast hot (especially jethro….. i really love jethro…). what if i said this movie’s so embedded in my brain, so beloved to me, that i like the big martin short/steve martin joke number. i get that it’s bad but their voices make me laugh and i like all the statues. “plagues” is stuck in my head in a very relentless way right now.

there are so many scenes that are shot and sound designed as if everyone is about to break into song…. why tease me like that…  

movie improved significantly when sidney poitier stops calling all these fun english teens with terrible hairdos sluts and starts making a disgusting sounding salad for the class and wearing a (slutty!) little mesh white t-shirt to teach the boys how to fight. i think it’s valid not to have taught fractions for a millisecond all year.

contains moments of truly sublime beauty but i always forget i find the story of jesus a bit confusing and odd until that last week in jerusalem. understandably this movie really expects you to know the story of jesus, but that left me a bit adrift. i think i always want more like… jesus character study and basically nobody cares about this. i really don't get john the baptist's whole deal. 

kind of an inspiring story about getting started at 30.

i said to adam “wow the audience loved that!” and adam said that the audience was laughing at how hard i was laughing. we may never know the truth. the whole world loves wallis island.

dakota johnson and rebel wilson are truly dreadful in this and it’s very apparent whenever the camera’s on leslie mann and alison brie (they also get the only 2-3 decent scenes). leslie mann is…. so good at delivering dialogue. anyway this is somehow worse than the also terrible but highly watchable he’s just not that into you but it does seem like the screenwriters decided “slutty commitment phobic male bartender” isn’t that hot an idea after all, which is good.

needed context for the mulaney bit (cried a lot)

i spent like 7 hours in the ER yesterday because i thought i had appendicitis or a ruptured cyst or something that turned out to be... literally nothing identifiable (waiting on blood work) and i spent all day waiting around playing this stupid chicken tetris game on my phone and i forgot to eat so when they finally let me out i got a massive bacon hamburger and a root beer (if whatever i've got turns out to be diet limiting, i'm going to have fun while i can!!) and i just really, really wanted to go to the movies just to sit there and eat some sour gummies i bought in chinatown yesterday and the only movie with a decent showtime was this. adam and i agreed to go in imax and just watch like, half an hour (i think we made it a full hour). he thought it might be fun because reportedly the crowds are kind of wild and they were? i hate being off twitter. anyway jason momoa and jennifer coolidge are genuinely excellent in this. jokes range from pleasantly stupid ("my butt!") to spiritually upsetting ("i'm going to unalive you") but it's a lot more pleasant stupid with that old jared hess flair than you might think. this movie is one billion times better than going to the ER but not so great i felt a strong desire to stick around for the last 40 minutes.

i'm so in love with the first bit of this movie that's just room after room full of people eating and talking over each other and then i feel a bit scrooge-like that this began to stress me out immensely (you GOTTA be better to your wife man). but that's that it's a wonderful life thing! you sort of don't have to do all that, but you also do? these two are much better people than me.

young laurence olivier i was not familiar with your game… honestly a vastly better adaptation than i was expecting!! really great! they’re so so stupid.

late night lynch still commanding lines down the block outside ifc. merrick patting down his coat on its hook so that it looks neat before john gielgud walks in makes me cry, as do many things in this movie. :’(

adding this to my list of movies that kinda make me want to have a kid (short round not the freaky boy with the voodoo doll). idk adam threw this on in the background and suddenly it was almost over. willie doesn’t work as a character, but i really get her. small planes… bugs… you’d never hear the end of it from me.

had friends over to watch this, which is something i’ve been plotting since i bought the blu ray off yesasia.com as a birthday present to myself :) and then we went to see big band jazz live at dizzy’s club and it was the perfect night :) for years i’ve wondered if a rewatch would make me want to knock it off my top 4 just to make room for something new but nope. :) someone has to spread the word. i love girls and hobbies and being bad at things you love and good at things you love and when a movie has to orchestrate a truly absurd series of Situations to get the plot chugging and when there’s lots of stupid little jokes going on and i love “take the a train.” i will repeat this exact evening as long as it takes for all my friends to see this.

the hottest i have ever seen michael douglas look... sweet movie with my princess jill clayburgh with a very 1980 insane credits song sung by diana ross.

oklahoma is so strange and fundamentally thorny that the relative blandness of this adaptation (dream ballet goth nightmare wedding & gloria grahame’s crazy ado annie voice innocent) feels like genius commentary on the way this town (this country….. perhaps!! paging daniel fish) acts after (spoiler i guess?) murdering a guy for being weird and unpleasant and covering it up in a sham trial. that’s more a credit to rodgers & hammerstein than fred zinnemann. unfortunately laughed at every ali hakim bit. a truly bizarre character.

this is the perfect plot and structure for a film. strongly posits that you should forgive an absolute bastard if he’s good at making movies and the horrible thing about me is i get it…. everything is more important but maybe nothing is! idk!!!

too charmed that this exists at all to say anything other than this was cute :) i like the goo and farmer jim and when they were bad at jobs :) anything that sets a kid on a path toward invasion of the body snatchers and the blob is a good thing.

so nice until it’s quite devastating, but mostly because i hate nighttime that’s not in the city. pretty immaculately structured, like maybe too much so but not in a bad way— i respect when a feature debut is well thought out! i cried when the really polite guy gets a home run. i wondered how much my lack of baseball knowledge would matter & i’m sure it helps to know the rules but people being sweet and crabby and falling down is universal. laughed really loud every time someone tripped or got smacked with something.

funny!!!! fun!!! i knew adam was falling for john cleese’s uptight shrew wife. kevin kline was giving strong corey stoll to me, or i suppose the other way around (hot). the fish stuff reminded me too much of a low quality porn my elementary school best friend’s new best friend (my enemy) made us watch on her computer at a classic 2006 “watching videos” hangout, in a bad way.
