Consider this a tribute to Stan "The Man" Lee.

DC comics was always ahead of Marvel during the Golden Age of comics (30s and 40s). They had Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and a plethora of others. Marvel (Who originally went by the names of Timely Comics and Atlas Comics) didn't have many superheroes at all. They had Captain America, the Human Torch (Not the one from FF) and the Sub-Mariner. They were popular at times but were often given a rest in favour of writing stories of then popular genres such as war and horror/fantasy. 

Then came the Silver Age of comics (50s and 60s) when the Comics Code Authority was established. This occurred because everyone thought that comic books were corrupting the children so they became censored (In later years it became more relaxed and was then abolished). At DC, the writers kept on with their big characters like Batman but their stories became sillier and more sci-fi focused. At Marvel, they didn't have many big characters and their content became weak and boring. 

Stan Lee had been at Marvel for years and became frustrated with the Comics Code. He planned to quit his job but his wife convinced him to write one more comic book, but this time write it the way he wanted. And in November 1961, that comic book became The Fantastic Four #1. Fantastic Four was a big hit and paved the way for Stan Lee and other writers at Marvel such as Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko to come together and create new and exciting characters such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Doctor Strange, Daredevil and more! And thus, the Marvel Universe was born.

If it weren't for Stan Lee, Marvel most likely wouldn't have become what it is today.
