A list comprising all newly released films I saw between 01/01/2020 and 12/31/2020 to which I gave at least three and a half stars, ranked roughly by my preference. Note that I consider three and a half stars to be very good. Ranking is subject to change, though I will not be updating this list after 2020 ends. This list was created retroactively according to the rules I currently use for these end-of-year lists. I didn’t watch as many films in 2020 as I do now, so the list isn’t nearly as long as future years. Enjoy!

Ended up seeing some good stuff this year even if the pandemic took us out of theaters for a while. Portrait is probably a top 10 film for me right now. Glad I had things like YouTube and Letterboxd to inform me about things like that; I wasn’t nearly into movies as much as I am now (currently making this list in April 2023), so I’m glad I had that push in the right direction and ended up being hype for Portrait before it even hit its wide US release. I may not feel as warmly toward some of these films now as I did in their release year (maybe bump up Palm Springs over Tenet and 1917, for example), but I'll leave the list true to my 2020 self. Not a bad year for movies, despite it all.
