I don't think I've ever hated a David Tennant character more than John Halder, and one of the worst realizations I've had in my entire life is that my parents are just like him.

Watching David Tennant telling his daughter "please hurt me" while she's having a meltdown the year I realized I was autistic kind of changed my life

and I thought Ian Holm yelled too much

Uneven- some moments of real beauty, and some that feel like what people who don't like Shakespeare think Shakespeare is like. Daughters have wonderfully distinct characterizations, Ian Holm sometimes chews the scenery a bit too much but absolutely earns it in his softer moments, Edgar is impish and lovable, Kent is moving and the Fool is a delight. Why do all these adaptations cut my boy Edmund's speech tho

Auditioning for Dawn in the musical tomorrow so I watched this. The pies as a representation of Jenna's feelings are a lovely idea that really ties the movie together, the script and performances are warm and believable, and there's some great quirky directorial touches (the zooming out shot of Jenna smiling!!!). That said, there were still some parts of this movie that left a bad taste in my mouth, like... a pie that's gotten a bit freezer burned??? Idk I'm trying to come up with a metaphor but it's not really working

I don't really mind the anti-abortion rhetoric, because this is a movie that takes place in the deep South 17 years ago, and as someone who grew up in Tennessee, that's just kind of how things are, and even if some of the characters judge Jenna for not initially wanting her baby I don't really think the movie does. My bigger problems are with Pomatter and Ogie's behavior, ESPECIALLY Ogie- this movie really really perpetuates the idea that you shouldn't believe a girl when she tells you no and that she'll just give in if you're persistent enough. I think the musical makes this a bit more forgivable by giving Dawn and Ogie common interests that make it make sense that Dawn would eventually decide she wants to be with him, but here you're just told Dawn eventually changed her mind offscreen and it feels really gross. Dawn and Becky are also much more distinct and memorable characters in the musical.

Rest In Peace to Adrienne Shelly- was thrilled to discover that Dawn's original actress wrote and directed the film, then saddened to discover that she was murdered.

bring back goofy opening action sequences and everyone shouting "YAYYY" at the end of the climax of the movie I wish the 2000s were real

This movie went from so bad it's good to just straight up peak like at first it's cringe and then it just keeps dropping the hardest lines of dialogue and having banger cinematography and costume design and soundtrack choices and Natasha Lyonne and Clea Duvall inventing lesbians

Dante Basco being in this movie makes up for Rupaul
