I still maintain that the broader narrative in Justin Kuritzkes' screenplay is more instructive and simplistic than it needed to be, but this rewatch made it even easier to gloss over that because of his excellent dialogue. At least a dozen of the lines in this film have been roiling around my head for a month and even more so now. Most importantly though, this film works because Guadagnino is precisely in tune with what this narrative needs, harnessing its predictability into a weapon of potent impact. Tashi and Art make out three years after the injury with Patrick nowhere in sight, so the next cut is to present-day Patrick smashing a racket. Art says Tashi was only into Patrick when they were teenagers, so the next cut is to them hooking up at the Atlanta Open. It's obvious but it's so damn compelling that it really doesn't matter at all.
