Everyone is talking about that scene (me, I am) and rightfully so, but there are so many others, most before the vampires even seem like a possibility, that are so well structured and acted—like Smoke’s negotiation lesson, Grace’s walk across the way, and Slim’s first taste of Irish beer. Then there are the ones that come after some neck biting like the splicing of Pearline’s performance with Mary x Stack that are just as great. 

Sinners is effective in pretty much every genre it’s executing. Genres as broad as comedy, action, horror, romance, even musical, smaller at gangster and vampire, and even smaller as the first act is a successful “I'm assembling a team” film and the eating of garlic in a circle functions as a mini whodunnit. And on top of all of that, it’s effective in its messaging about sex, spirits, skin color, and much more. 

From the costuming to the score to that one shot of Jack O’Connell and the moon when the music gets all classic and loud, I think this is really excellent and exciting!

When the rhythmic sound of Annie striking a match synchronized with the music??? This is major folks!

I was on edge all day and then went to the movies to decompress and what the actual fuck was I thinking. If nothing else, incredibly effective in building anxiety and overall bleakness. I have never wanted to leave a theater so badly (maybe complimentary somehow).

Sex, gore, and rock-n-roll. 

I can see a world where people call the plot of Sinners formulaic, but it leans into comedy and the cliché in a way that feels realized and makes room for everything this movie has to talk about which includes the blues baby! Preacher Boy’s performance is the film-stealing scene and I am eternally grateful that not a second of it was in the trailer because what a joy. Michael B. Jordan is good but Miles Caton, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo were consistently blowing him off the screen for me. 

The post credit scene is so MCU brain it’s laughable, and it continues to confuse me that twins played by the same actor have yet to look as seamless as the Lindsay Lohan’s in The Parent Trap, but yeah this was a whole lot of fun.
