Dune: Part Two

2024

★★★★½ Liked

Film is such a funny thing.

The sheer feel of cloud 9 that this film has had on me and the vast majority of the film community is unbelievable, but sometimes that isn’t necessarily a good thing.

This film I have obviously been anticipating for so so long, it’s one of my favourite pieces of fiction ever, and with that comes a bias of not necessarily wanting to believe that you have problems with it.

I find myself in that situation.

I have been ignoring it in my few previous logs and just wanted to see it more to solidify my thoughts.

I want to say this though. I do absolutely love this film and will do for a long time, it’s a stunning achievement in filmmaking and for the most part I don’t have any problems with it.

However, for me this needs to be longer.

Across my watches my feelings have changed about which parts needed more, but I feel that in the third act there is just too much that we don’t see, therefore leading to a rushed narrative.

You can say this for parts of earlier in the film but I’m not so bothered by those bits.

I know I am among the few here, but I do prefer part 1.

I love how it takes it time with it’s narrative and isn’t necessarily jumping from place to place and doesn’t feel like and incomplete jigsaw puzzle.

The third act just leaves too much on its plate with the sections in between that I feel need to be there.

This is such a hard pill to swallow for me, because of my sheer love for the story and characters, but it’s been giving me such a headache that I just couldn’t ignore it.

This will probably be the highest of highs of a 4.5.

But unfortunately, a 5/5 requires perfection.
