I would’ve called you crazy if you told me the best movie of the three I watched on my flight would’ve been this one, but it was! This movie is truly fantastic as a romcom where I had many good laughs and has jumped up in my all time favorite films list without a doubt! Lovely film

I enjoyed this movie a lot coming after Until the End of the World, I didn’t feel the longer runtime at all and thought it was paced quite well. Really good movie throughout with the nonlinear storytelling that was used and I enjoyed this a lot as a history nerd.

First movie of my 9 hour flight, I was perhaps a little disappointed because I expected more but I can’t say that I was displeased with the film. It was quite good and I did enjoy the contents of it, but it is a lot to unpack in nearly 5 hours so it’ll be getting a rewatch whenever possible

Longest Films I’ve Watched

This is a weird film for me, on one hand I love Scott’s performance, the way the story is presented and because I’m a big fan of war films. On the other hand, I actually wasn’t a fan of the pacing, and I usually don’t complain about pacing on long films, but this one struggles for me. I do plan to give it a rewatch sometime this year again, but it’s an overall good film, heavily because of Scott’s performance. 

Just heads up, Two films will be logged under tomorrow, Wednesday June 4th (you’ll likely be reading this already on the 4th as I post this late) when I land from my flight on the 5th of June. So they’ll be entered the day after but I watched them on the 4th, so not losing my watch streak!

After many years, I’ve finally rewatched the OG Rocky, and I’m glad to say it’s better than I from the first time around. The beginning is a tad slow for me, I’m not sure why I wasn’t clicking with it but after the ice skating scene I really started to enjoy the film as a whole. The end is chaotic with Rocky trying to meet Adrien but it works imo, you can see at the moment he doesn’t care about the scores but rather seeing his girl.

Interesting film for sure, heavy dialogue but man are they good. Woody Allen and Diane really deliver top notch performances, really makes the film standout. Not sure how to feel about the nonlinear storytelling tho, will have to rewatch.

Something in me went crazy because of that bar scene at the end. That whole scene elevated the movie to another level, just wow Clint Eastwood said fuck it imma carry this finale and delivered. Very dark, gritty toned western but it works very well because of it, moves a bit slow at times but for good reasons.

In a spiraling world of New York where French narcotic gangs run wild, Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider star as Jimmy Doyle and Buddy Russo in The French Connection. The movie is quite fast at the pacing, making it for quick and flashy scenes, very good for its time speaking of that. This film overall is pretty good at telling the story and keeping the tone where it needs to be, but it’s not one that fully resonated with me all that much.

I stumbled upon the 236 minutes extended cut of this film, which excited me a bit because I’m a sucker for long films. While I do find this movie to be good, it does drag a lot, more than I usually notice with long films. Perhaps it’s because it’s the extended cut, trying to allow for more development and depth with Costner’s character but this one wasn’t one that clicked with me all that much. Aside from that, it is a beautiful mind cinematically speaking and the camera angle/shots that are used, I was very impressed with it. I think the performances were quite good, they drive the story forward and it pushes us to think about the characters. Overall, I think it’s obvious this should NOT have won best picture over Goodfellas, but I am not one to knock the film completely because of that.

This film walked so Ocean’s Eleven could run. What a film, the chapter breakdown makes it so incredibly easy to follow and the twist at the end, masterfully executed. One of my favorite best picture winners to date.

Well isn’t this just a fun movie that ends in a tragic way 🦧 I loved this film, so so so good. Both lead actors give phenomenal performances and Joe Buck as a character might just be one of my favorite characters in cinema. Spectacular film and exploration of alienation. Two more best picture winners coming today!

This is one of the clearest act structured films I’ve seen in a very long time, biopic film specifically. I mean, if this isn’t one of the best biopic story told movies in history I don’t know what it is quite frankly. Denzel Washington not getting an Oscar for this performance is certainly a choice, but the Academy sure makes some rational choices. Story is just beautifully captured and told about the figure that is Malcolm X. I was surprised though, I thought we would spend more time with him while he was in prison but I guess it went by quickly when watching.

A later start to today but finally got around to watching a film that’s been sitting on my watchlist for quite some time now. As someone who’s majoring in Politics with aspirations to work in political journalism, this was right up my alley. I loved Redford’s performance in this film, Hoffman’s performance was also quite good throughout the film. Doesn’t end with any big celebrations, just the life of journalists continuing and not with Nixon reg or anything. Great film and even better use of color grading that allows for a darker atmosphere throughout different periods.

Holy shit this film grew on me so much as the story progressed forward. Legit one of the best last hour or so of a film that I’ve seen in quite some time. It’s a slow build up to the epic battle with the sky people and it pays off in an immensely satisfying way. The visuals continue to wow me, even more than the first one, as some of the visuals during those action sequences were so incredibly breathtaking.

Visually fucking stunning oh my goodness. I had extremely high expectations for the visuals from what I’ve heard about this before but it was even better than I expected, could be because of the quality of my tv but still oh my goodness James Cameron delivered. The story itself, I found to be quite interesting as the story developed onward, speaking around 75 minute onward, I think the start was a bit slow paced for me and that’s why I wasn’t enjoying it as much as the second half of the film. Still enjoyed this a lot more than I imagined!

Yeah man I was wrong about this film the first time I watched it, very wrong about it. A lot of the deeper meaning of the work, didn’t connect or make complete sense to me, which I think is why I originally didn’t vibe with it as much. This time, it connected more and more with me as it went on, making more sense overall compared to the first time. The first booth meaning is everything, from color usage to the silence to the sound of nothingness. Leading to the second and iconic booth meeting that sets up the finale with Jane. Truly poetic and beautiful, a film I was wrongfully about the first time I watched and one that I’ll keep coming back to this year and onwards.

This film walked so Interstellar/Blade Runner/Star Wars/Arrival could run. Hal-9000 walked so Darth Vader could run. Greatest villain in cinema on technical aspect. Greatest sci fi film by a clear margin, greatest visuals in a film (tied with BR 2049 although, this more influential) ever and the greatest linear storytelling in history. Comfortably sliding into number 2 in my all time list.

Keeping the theme of coming-of-age films with this poignant and quite sad British film about Mr. Billy. I loved it, very fun!

A freshman and a senior kissing 🤨 anyway, this movie just made perfect sense to be watched after finishing high school! I do relate to a lot of the experiences Charlie goes through with depression and loneliness so I understand a lot of what happened to him. High school can be a bitch, I’ll tell ya that first hand but man can there be enjoyable moments throughout those four years.

Tomorrow is my last day of high school ever and this was pretty fitting to be watched :). A fun rewatch of another famous school movie tomorrow to celebrate! Very fun film as u expected.

Hello, this is the greatest film ever created and I don’t think it’ll be removed from number 1 for a long time. That’s it, goodbye.

DC / DCEU Ranked - The Suicide Squad

Entertaining as fuck for a movie, the squad delivers once again, except this time it’s a different squad except Harley. Last DCEU film for a bit, and couldn’t be happier with ending it on this film as it was one of the better DCEU films. Diving into some non franchise films for the rest of the week (aside from Friday) so stay tuned!

DC / DCEU Ranked - Birds of Prey!

Another fun movie entry from the DCEU! This was much better than Suicide Squad story wise and how it was executed (although had more fun with Suicide Squad) with Harley Quinn serving up another amazing performance. The bond between Harley and Cassandra was surprisingly really neatly done.

DC / DCEU Ranked - Shazam!

This might be the most lighthearted and comedic movie from the DCEU or MCU franchises not gonna lie. Very fun movie, nothing too serious aside from some serious moments in action sequences but even then they were comedic. Not much to say on this one, it’s fun and well done.

DC / DCEU Ranked - Aquaman

Impeccable visuals for majority of this film let me get that out of the way first. Mamoa’s acting? Shit was not bad at all! Now…Nicole Kidman feels like a miscast, her face just doesn’t fit the role in my opinion at all. The film overall is interesting, some flaws and some positives all around, makes for an entertaining movie that’s pretty okay. I enjoyed it for the most part, I rate Aquaman’s character as a whole to be pretty badass.

DC / DCEU Ranked - Wonder Woman

A solid entry into the DCEU franchise that is by no means bad but by no means good. It’s a solid film, I like the World War 1 setting and tone that it brings to the table, perhaps because I’m a big war movie fan so this was up my alley. However, it’s a flawed movie that features a heavy dose of CGI in the third act, which isn’t all that bad but quite overused. I wasn’t a big fan of that third act and some scenes felt out of place during this act. Like they threw one scene in between the fight that throws you off completely. Overall, it’s a solid film and I like Steve Trevor’s (weird name though) character and performance, not sure how to feel about Gal’s performance as Wonder Woman but it isn’t like horrendously bad but it’s not great.

DC / DCEU Ranked - Suicide Squad

This is not as bad as I imagined! I went into this with an open mind and it pays off when you have a laid back expectation in your mind. Harley Quinn and Deadshot’s character are surprisingly quite good imo, while the others were promising but it felt like they were very rarely given much attention aside from certain moments. My biggest gripe comes from a scene I actually enjoyed, which was Angela introducing the squad at the dinner. She gives a long intro to Harley and Deadshot, but the others feel rushed, something I wasn’t a big fan of. However, I had fun with this, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t. It’s not good but it’s not bad, it’s an okay film that delivers in the category of fun.

DC / DCEU Ranked - Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition 

Keep in mind for this review that I watched the Ultimate Edition and not theatrical cut. This is a good movie, I understand the criticism and hate it gets but in my opinion after sitting down and giving it a proper watch, I really enjoyed it. I’ll get to certain things I noticed and reviews I’ve read below as well, as I do understand this is a film with many flaws. I personally enjoyed this for how well it is shot, paced for 3 hours (although some sluggish dragged out scenes), action sequences/fights, character development (which I heard is bad for Batman in the theatrical cut) and the overall appearance of the film. I understand that it’s a darker tone superhero film which not everyone enjoys, especially for Superman, but for Batman’s character the darker tone and appearance is just so good to watch. I also understand that Batman kills here and that comically, he’s not supposed to through the “no-kill” rule, however the way it’s done here is something I can get behind, although I understand why others may not like it. I think the ultimate edition really allows for a full development of both Superman and Batman’s characters + Lois’s story within the overall story. While I enjoy Jesse Eisenberg’s performance, I’m very aware it is nowhere near the Lex Luthor that is shown in comic books (something I need to read) and at times I feel like his character just doesn’t click at all. Overall it works for the story as a whole, but it’s not Lex Luthor that is known through the comics. 

Moving on, the criticism and negative reviews of the film. While I’m not sure if the reviews talk about the theatrical or ultimate cut, I do notice a common theme in regards to Batman’s killing (which I mentioned above) and including TDKR and The Death of Superman all in one was too much. That is fair, I can respect that criticism, although I can’t comment too much due to not having read the comics yet. However, I do agree that it does juggle a lot of things, and the plot gets a bit confusing overtime. 

Overall, it’s around 3.5 stars but personal enjoyment is always taken into consideration and it bumps up to a 4 star film for me. By no means do you have to agree, but if you did read all the way down to here, give your thoughts in the comments!

DC / DCEU Ranked - Man of Steel

And so the DCEU marathon begins, one I’m quite excited about as I love dc characters and I’ve also gotten into DC comics lately. First up is Zack Snyder’s infamous Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill as Superman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. I enjoyed this, I thought it was good but I do understand a lot of the general criticism it gets, rightfully so as well. However, I like the different approach to Superman’s character as a whole but I felt like there was no “hope” in Superman through a lot of the public, something Superman’s character stands for. It does though, present a more grounded, dark and destructive Superman film that I’m open too, perhaps I’ve adapted to Zack Snyder’s filmmaking and that is why. I thought 3rd act’s destruction was a bit over the top but it didn’t take away from my liking as a whole, and the ending I did enjoy actually. Overall, a pretty good film, it’s not a masterpiece or best of the best, but it works for me and I enjoyed it.

DC / DCEU Universe Ranked - Watchmen

It is only right that after MCU, we begin the DC universe marathon! While this film is not apart of the broader DCEU (alongside Joker and The Batman which will also be apart of this marathon), it only felt right to begin with this to explore Zack Snyder’s filmmaking, learn more about lesser known dc characters and watch another ultimate cut. This is a fantastic movie that does not feel that long at all, I enjoyed the pacing of it, even with The Black Freighter comic story being told here and there. I absolutely loved all of the main characters in the film, especially Rorschach, which became one of my favorite characters across all of cinema.

SpiderVerse Ranking - Spider-Man Across The Spider Verse

Masterpiece. Art. Poetry. Animation perfection. Beautiful cliffhanger at the end, really sets up for the third film if we ever get that.  Quite possibly one of the best films looking ever but I will have to say that I enjoyed Into the Spider Verse a bit more but this is overall better in the overall story.

Nahhhh man this movie is too much fun! What a spectacular work of cinema and animation, this is truly one of the best movie I’ve laid my eyes on. The structure of this movie is so well done and the story as a whole is different from the other spider man films (live action specifically) and so much fun to watch. Miles Morales is a perfectly well written character as well speaking on that. Beautiful story, amazing songs, great animation and spectacular cinematography.

SpiderVerse Ranking - The Amazing Spider-Man 2

A fun, action packed and exciting adventure with Andrew Garfield. Thus, completing our live action adventure of Spider Man before we dive into animated Spider Man. This was a fun one and good because of it, yet does juggle a few different villains and this certainly led to the tone being different more than I expected.

Spider-Man Spiderverse Ranking - The Amazing Spider-Man 1

A very fun film all around, I think Garfield is a dandy good spider-man and he’s pretty good emotionally when he’s Peter. I do prefer the Maguire films more, thought the villain was significantly better than this film’s but Connor still works quite well. TASM 2 later today!

Hate him or love him, Jared Leto is a good fucking actor when the role fits him. Between this and Requiem for a Dream, it’s hard to choose which one is his best role/performance. This movie is puzzling, intentionally so yet also very good because of that. It’ll get a rewatch along the year, the director’s cut will be my choice (it’s the one I watched for this one anyway), but see if I understand it better.

This is as cool as it gets for an action sci fi film. Preston is so fucking ass, Christian bale genuinely is an S tier actor and I’m talking all time, he just doesn’t miss as an actor.

About damn time! It has been too long without giving this classic a watch, and I finally got around to it today. Giving some science fiction films a watch today before diving into the Spiderverse universe tomorrow, so the MCU marathon has been completed! 

Very fun, innovating and entertaining to watch. It is really fun to see how things play out as the film goes and it’s paced incredibly well imo.

MCU Marathon - The Marvels

Holy fuck this shit genuinely is as bad as Quantumania and that was awful. It’s only better because I was able to finish it and the acting wasn’t even bad, just a godawful script and rushed story.

MCU Marathon - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Fuck ass movie making me emotional over a damn raccoon 🥲 
Such a fun yet emotional movie that this group of heroes continue to deliver every single volume. Rocket’s backstory is so tragic man, worst part is that it happens irl with animal testing too. Proper finale too imo, very beautiful ending with Dog Days are Over as a song choice.

MCU Marathon - Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania

And to my surprise, we ended up having a dnf on the MCU marathon. I got about an hour into the film, but I could not bring myself to continue further as I genuinely did not like the story at all. It just felt like things were rushed and not really adding up most of the time imo. Expected this to be lower down but this was bad.

MCU Marathon - Wakanda Forever 

This is a dandy good film man. It does struggle with juggling everything it tries to bring to the table but it still works for the most part. It is quite entertaining, cheesy but funny dialogue at times and impeccable visuals/set pieces. My biggest gripe though would have to be the runtime, as it could’ve been shorter in my opinion and that’s where in the middle it most took place because it dragged out heavily. Shuri’s character continues to be a special character after each movie.

MCU Marathon - Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

A lot happens but nothing happens at the same time. Disappointing and underwhelming compared to the first film of Doctor Strange. A shame.
