Preston Marr’s review published on Letterboxd:
Dune: Part Two is undoubtedly one of the best sequels of all time and an absolute masterclass in science-fiction. As someone who absolutely loves “Dune” (2021), I was out of my mind hyped for this film and dear god it outdoes the previous entry in every way possible. Denis Villeneuve proves once again he is one of the greatest directors working today and helms a true all-time science-fiction epic which will become an instant classic. He was the perfect director to bring “Dune” to the big screen as there is no filmmaker working right now that is able to capture scale and scope quite the way Denis Villeneuve can. He is flexing his chops majorly here crafting an absolutely breathtaking film with cinematographer, Greig Fraser. This film is visually dazzling with some of the most stunning cinematography i’ve seen in years, it truly is a disservice to yourself not to catch this on the biggest screen you can near you. There are so many highlight moments in here that I can’t stop thinking back to that are truly awe-inspiring; Dune: Part Two is the type of film that is in your mind nonstop after you leave the theater. Hans Zimmer once again returns to compose the score which pairs perfectly with the tone and one that I can’t stop screaming randomly throughout my house. The technical side of this film really couldn’t be much better as I think Denis Villeneuve crafted such an immersive and bone-chilling experience. The ensemble is truly the definition of star-studded and all fall into their roles seamlessly here. Christopher Walken & Florence Pugh were both very solid here. Stellan Skarsgård & Dave Bautista command their screen time extremely well; completely stealing the show when they do appear with their malice. Javier Bardem had me laughing fairly consistently as “Stilgar” & Josh Brolin is impossible not to root for as “Gurney.” Rebecca Ferguson & Zendaya are both excellent and I can’t wait to see where both of their characters go in the next film. Timothée Chalamet & Austin Butler deliver superstar performances and by far standout the most. Timothée brings possibly his strongest outing yet with his performance of “Paul Atreides” as its no doubt in anyone’s mind he is “Paul Atreides” now. He absolutely crushes this role along with the physical side of his performance as well and keeps somehow finding ways to outdo himself as an actor. Austin Butler comes into this film like a wild fire and delivers my favorite performance of his career. Butler taps into an aura I didn’t think he had in him as “Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen,” capturing a psychotic over-the-top villain that I truly couldn’t get enough of. He’s certainly unrecognizable with the makeup job here and I think audiences will this performance for a long time. I love the arc they take “Paul” (Timothée Chalamet) on and the film does a great job at making you feel inner-turmoil as you’re rooting for him but certainly not agreeing with all of the decisions he makes here. I loved the narrative going on here and found a great deal of pay off from it’s predecessor as I was so enthralled with how the story unfolded and everything was structured. This film delivers such gorgeous action sequences that are filmed extremely well as you’re going to be on the edge of your seat; not to mention the visual effects look astonishing as well. There is such brilliant character building going on throughout here that really fleshes everyone out and makes these grand things feel so personal. This film is just as rich thematically asking the question of what’s the line between loyalty and blindly following/trusting, and really just dives deep into prophets and false prophets. I was absolutely enamored by this last act and truly couldn’t have loved this ending more. It’s hard to get into specifics without giving anything away but this last act FUCKS & gives excellent resolve and payoff while still paving the way right to the third installment. This film left with me far more to think about than I thought it would and frankly I haven’t been able to get it out of my mind since yesterday. There’s truly so much to take & soak in here and I’m already thinking about my next screening for it now. Seeing this opening night was a feeling I really hope I never forget and I can’t wait to see how this film is regarded over time. I truly think this is history in the making for science-fiction and immediately establishes itself as one of the best sequels ever made. Yes, this is worth any & all the hype you can imagine and i’m absolutely counting down the days for any news regarding “Dune: Part Three” or “Messiah” or whatever it’ll be called. I’m gonna give Dune: Part Two a legendary 100% 💯.
