Yesterday, this film was simple entertainment. Today, this has become something truly unlike any piece of media I’ve ever seen. I woke up to calls from my family telling me something terrible had happened and that I needed to get home as soon as possible, only to learn that my grandpa, the man who had taught me everything, my personal Superman, had fallen… And he didn’t have much time left. A carpenter by trade, married to a seamstress, he always talked about death - how he knew it was coming for him, that there was only so much time left. This film, following a carpenter married to a seamstress, lament their own mortality compared to their impossible child - a beautiful princess blessed by the moon. As I rushed into the hospital room, only to find my dear Avô unresponsive, this film was far from my mind. But as the day went on, as I watched my family grieve the inevitable, I could only think of this film’s closing images - a carpenter and a seamstress watching their darling daughter get lifted into the air and surrounded by angels as she returns to where she was always meant to be: the heavenly moon. With no time left to mourn, they simply thank her for having been there - for being their daughter - and for offering them the limited time she had on this Earth. With that in mind, all I can say is that fate ordained I watch this masterpiece last night in preparation for the horrors of today - and that above all else, I will always love my Avô.

Arguably a greater insight into Hideaki Anno’s mind than Evangelion, because at the end of the day, Anno is first and foremost a total nerd. What might appear to be a simple fan-film soon reveals itself as masterful pastiche and immediately illustrates why Anno will eventually become the legend he is today - smart camera angles lets us weave through exposition while breaking from the action to focus on inserts of man-made destruction, cueing us into deeper themes of human culpability and fault in kaiju films, while an Ishiro Honda-like focus on the process and mechanical movements of each practical effect illustrates Anno’s familiarity with the genre. Anno manages to create a near picture-perfect reconstruction of Ultraman, only to hit the most daring choice in the last eight minutes, replacing our favorite silver superhero with… Himself in an Ultraman jacket. It’s not every day you get to watch a young Spielbergian-level talent direct a Superman fanfilm, only to play Superman himself. Was this a tongue-in-cheek decision? Or did Anno cue us into his complicated psyche by playing an emotionless superhuman - an alien from beyond the stars, incapable of processing our worldly emotions. So much stronger than us but so distant, only able to exist on the same reality as us for mere minutes in a day, incapable of love, grief, joy, or sadness. Did Anno just want to play superhero… Or does he really, truly want to be Ultraman?

A vile, soulless monstrosity, cobbled together in a stockholders meeting instead of a writer’s room. A grave sin that Disney will never be able to wipe their hands off of. No possible redemption, no spin-off TV shows to massage the damage, no strategy to explain how the crucial impetus for the plot was locked away in Fortnite.

Prior to the production of this film, Uncle Rico would go on to be signed by Al Davis, general manager of the Oakland Raiders, to serve as quarterback in the 1999 season. With such career highlights as throwing to the legendary Jerry Rice, Rico proved to be a surprising dark horse MVP candidate as he helmed the Raiders, including an award-winning season in 2002. However, following the controversial Tuck Rule game, in which Tom Brady would be mistakenly ruled as throwing an incomplete when he actually had fumbled the ball, Uncle Rico’s career would end in disappointment, including a lost Super Bowl, two injury-ridden seasons, and serving as the final precursor to a dark era of Raider’s football, in which they’ve only been to the playoffs twice since Rico played his last down, explaining why he’s so bummed.

Slowly but surely, this epileptic masterpiece left the entire theater bursting with laughter at the sight of good ol’ Abel tearfully belting out an apologetic ballad. I haven’t seen a film so bizarre regarding it’s own psychology and relationship with it’s own artist while simultaneously remaining so profoundly vague - it’s dizzying, it’s disorienting, and it’s genuinely dangerous. Wouldn’t recommend to any of my epileptic friends, the Weekend is genuinely out to kill you just so he can sing about how sad your death made him.

When I was a little boy, my mom would take me to church - a Herculean effort in itself considering how boring I found the whole affair. An hour locked in a wide room with nowhere to go but listen to my elders sing and profess their faith in something I didn’t understand? It was Hell for a kid… And how I got through it, when I wasn’t doodling on the worship aid, was by playing with a little Hercules action figure and a plastic chariot it came with. Nowadays, I’m able to recognize the irony that I was entertaining myself in the house of God with a plastic facsimile of a Pagan Demigod, but alas, that little Hercules toy is now forever burned into my memory as a symbol of faith. Not necessarily as some personal Catholic relic, but in a more personal and cerebral sort of faith - originally , I adored this movie simply due to the sheer amount of monsters proliferating its screentime, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve found that, as someone who struggled with a birth defect throughout my youth, I was unconsciously putting myself into Hercules’ sandals and using this animated hero as a role model for myself. Sure, this is a wonderful Disney animation marketed to families with small children, but being able to see the faith and perseverance of someone who isn’t comfortable in his own body until he could eventually become who he always wanted to be meant everything to a young boy. As the current digital landscape does nothing but pump out horrifying, toxically masculine forms of role models for young boys and men, I find myself always returning to this film - where a powerful young man learns that the best way he can express his emotions and his strength is by devoting himself to others, to the protection of those he cares about, and to be there for those who need it most. Sure, much of that is expressed through Hercules physically dominating the opponent, but as shown through this film, those aspects of manhood - combat and glory - wins him nothing in the end. It’s the act of opening up, being honest with himself, and choosing to give away his immense possibilities to remain humble and considerate for those around him, that he is able to truly become the man he has always wanted. In this day and age, it’s incredibly crucial that we teach the growing boys and men around us to be less like Andrew Tate and more like Hercules - it is only through role models like this that we can really, truly go the distance.

I have too many fond memories of this film to not treat it as a foundational piece of cinema for me - from watching a Chinese bootleg my grandma brought back from a day at work, making me an early adopter of the infamous “Backstroke of the West” redub simply because she thought that was Star Wars, to everyone spouting off each line from Anakin and Obi-Wan’s notorious final duel one by one in my sophomore weightlifting class (yes, I was in a weightlifting class) between each set. However, despite the fact that I’ve seen this film as nothing more than a joke for the first twenty years of my life, I can’t lie… I think the revisionists have a point. This isn’t Star Wars, it’s Othello and Macbeth smashed into one, with each awkward line read thumping with the ferocity only offered in iambic pentameter. Revenge of the Sith is an opera - the fate of the galaxy decided in a transcendent ballet of a climactic final duel. From the very first shot, Revenge of the Sith throws down the gauntlet and exclaims to the audience - “This isn’t going to be like the other two.” In fact, on this most recent watch, I conducted a bold experiment, opting to scrap any memory of the maligned Episode I and II in favor of envisioning this as the one true prequel - who needs all this convoluted setup when you can simply roll with “This is Anakin, this is Obi-Wan, and this is the Emperor.” That’s all you need. And good lord, it’s pure unfiltered gasoline.

A dizzying display of color, gore, and yokai, all packaged in a story so depraved and shocking you aren’t sure if you should be recoiling from the stomach-churning visuals or the terror of the narrative. There is so much bubbling underneath it’s painterly surface, forcing you to consider if you’re bearing witness to a plain-and-simple exploitation flick bristling with monster-men or a Salò-style deconstruction of fascism painted in the colors of Japan’s Shōwa era. A kaleidoscopic Wonderland populated with murderers, pedophiles, and rapists, this is a film I recommend to nobody except for the truly seasoned veterans of cinema. This one certainly isn’t pretty, no matter how many colors of paint they can throw at the screen, but for those who can stomach plenty of shock, there’s a mystifying quality to this film - as the magician Masamitsu proudly proclaims “It’s all an illusion.

I have a whole week’s backlog of films waiting to review that I’ve had to put on the backburner due to this one film. Instead of fumbling about to conjure up a new review right here and now, I’d like to lift some of my previous thoughts on this film. I was applying to a Horror-based internship with the prompt asking me to recount what the scariest film I ever saw was:

As someone whose romantic history has been marked by emotional and mental abuse, I find that there’s a uniquely mundane horror found in day-to-day relationships - a bubbling anxiety that somebody you love and hold dear can quite literally transform into a monster at the drop of a hat. But more than this, the idea of being dragged back into that situation - being locked in the room with your own personal boogeyman - after having successfully freed yourself is the most unutterable horror I can imagine. In fact, after I had gained some time and distance away from my ab, I found myself in a new relationship not unlike Joel and Clementine. Watching Eternal Sunshine, I instantly recognized the hopeless and desperate nature of Joel, his indescribable need for someone like Clementine, and the angry defiance in which he subjected his own mind in order to fight to keep one memory of her.

Just one.

As someone who felt they had to fight tooth-and-nail for even the opportunity to be with my new partner, I immediately understood how and why Joel of all people needed Clementine… But also the dual-sided coin that Clementine served - that she herself was no savior but possibly a new ab herself. I had so much anxiety and fear that my new partner would become the very same person that my ab had been that I was truly horrified that one night, while asleep in the bed next to her, I’d wake up and find my ab in her place. I would have nightmares of my partner being dragged away into the dark, only to be replaced by the image of my ab - the living ghost of my past, a memory I couldn’t ever forget, even if I had subject myself to the most grievous of brain damage. Watching Clementine be yanked off-screen, straight from Joel’s hands, or to see her dissolve and fade away through each and every happy memory felt so viscerally real because, for me, those were my greatest nightmares turned into pictures on a screen. To even think of having so many important pieces of myself, the pieces that matter most in making myself me, poisoned with the inserted memory of my ab terrified me to my core. For many people, Eternal Sunshine is a moving tour-de-force of romance… And I believe so too - but I cannot deny that, at least for me, there has never been a film that can so accurately and so poignantly describe the aching anxiety of being alone and abused then watching Joel scream at the pitch-black sky, “Is there anyone out there?

I didn’t get the internship.

A foundational piece of cinema, beyond simply creating the PG-13 rating through its sheer bombacity alone. I my mom sitting me down, handing me a cup of hot chocolate, and putting this magnificent piece of art onto the TV when it was just us at home. Not only had she just introduced me to the character of Indiana Jones but also guaranteed her son would forever be a student of Spielberg. Marked by a breakneck pace, a commitment to the absurd, and a dedication to always introducing a new obstacle at every way for our plucky protagonists, Temple of Doom might be an angrier, more cynical film than its predecessor, but it still pulses with humanity. It’s bleak and brutal, grimy and outdated, and beyond all else, throbbing with anger at the darkest parts of ourselves. The war that rages within Indiana Jones as he succumbs to Kali Ma is the same battle we all have against the insidious parts of ourselves - surely something Spielberg and Lucas both knew was boiling over as they drew up such a bold, vibrant, and in-your-face film. But in the end, in Hollywood, anything goes…

TL;DR, every great director should be forced to make a divorce film.

A sexually charged whirlwind of color and emotion, this is the classiest way to do an album drop. I did not anticipate the full feature film music video to also be a surprisingly layered exploration of Nature vs. Nurture, the cycles of abuse, and the sins of the father. However, every time the film cuts to Prince in his newest JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure cosplay, all I can think is “spot the anime protagonist.” To its credit, this is the film’s greatest strength.

Ah, just as traumatic and shockingly visceral as when I first watched it at the ripe old age of eighteen. An explosive tribute to the Greatest that not only fueled a fundamental shakeup of its entire genre but also my own understanding of film. It's difficult to get through its minuscule runtime not only to due to pacing issues or Michael Jordan’s saccharine sentimentality, but because of it’s dedication to illustrating the sexual trauma Lola Bunny inflicted on so many of our grandfathers. Good cartoons are squashed, detonated, and inflated on loop, until the very last second of the film - all rendered in animation that does a disservice to the final project. It's this guiding principle that makes this film so funny - by literally illustrating how it would feel to be on the court with Michael Jordan and Buggs Bunny. It's raw, it's real, and it's a goddamn shame that the men in power today have forgotten the true cost of sacrifice.

Ah, just as traumatic and shockingly visceral as when I first watched it at the ripe old age of eight (thanks Dad.) A bloodsoaked tribute to the fallen that not only fueled a fundamental shakeup of its entire genre but also my own understanding of film. It's difficult to get through its gargantuan runtime, not due to any pacing issues or Spielberg's typical saccharine sentimentalism, but because of a honest brutality dedicated to illustrating the trauma so many of our grandfathers experienced. Good men die repeatedly, on loop, until the very last second of the film - necessary sacrifices in service to a greater good. It's this guiding principle that elevates Spielberg's work behind the camera into a moving testament to history - to illustrate how being there felt, what it sounded like, and what it looked like. It's raw, it's real, and it's a goddamn shame that the men in power today have forgotten the true cost of sacrifice.

Oh you knew it was coming, don’t act surprised. Now, it’s finally time to rank every major entry in the Godzilla franchise and appreciate everyone’s favorite Big Lizard. These are my personal opinions but hey, if you want to take them seriously, have some fun.

  1. Terror of Mechagodzilla

My personal favorite film ever made and a biased #1 pick, The Terror of Mechagodzilla has the single greatest Godzilla entrance in the franchise and has a shockingly moving storyline about control, loss, and the power of desperation. Honda’s last hurrah is an under-appreciated gem, a moving piece on feminism, and a masterclass of cinema.

  2. Godzilla

The obvious follow-up - very few entries in the Godzilla franchise even come close to the narrative height and thematic significance of this masterpiece. A mandatory watch for any aspiring filmmaker. Truly a work of art.

  3. Godzilla Minus One

The closest any entry has ever come to the original highs of the original Gojira (1954), Minus One is a vicious and life-affirming tribute to the King of the Monsters that tackles the original’s themes with the same weight and punch. An instant modern day classic and my top film of 2023.

  4. Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

The film that shot up my list of favorites by far the most of any entry in this list after rewatching it, Destoroyah is a riveting goodbye to the lagging Heisei era, managing to handle both a touching monster plot featuring the impending death of the King while also calling back to the original Gojira in clever and insidious ways. A top of the line finale that lets Heisei end on the highest of high notes.

  5. Shin Godzilla

A personal favorite that remains the source of so many striking images that still inspire me to this day, Shin Godzilla boldly reinvents Godzilla for the modern day in a deeply impersonal and savagely distant manner, making his rampage more of an Act of God than any other entry on this list. Unsettling and eerie, this entry certainly plays up the horror more than most.

  6. The Return of Godzilla

A strange entry - considering how piss poor the American dub of this film is. In comparison, the original 1984 Japanese dub, although hard to find, is one of the most electric and compelling entries in the franchise, pitting a concerned Prime Minister against a world prepared to turn Japan into a nuclear crater, setting the stage for the political intrigue typical of later entries. There is no Shin Godzilla or Minus One without this riveting entry - but please, I beg you, watch the Japanese version!!!

  7. Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.

An absolute sleeper hit that far too many Godzilla fans write off, Tokyo S.O.S. picks up exactly where it’s prior entry, Against Mechagodzilla, left off, setting the stage for a Mexican Standoff unlike anything the world has seen. A brilliant follow-up to Against Mechagodzilla, the original Mothra (1961), *and* Gojira (1954), Tokyo S.O.S. does something no other entry ever has - giving the original Godzilla that stomped Tokyo all the way back in ‘54 a compelling and deeply moving character arc. I was moved to tears upon my last rewatch.

  8. Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla

The setup to Tokyo S.O.S., Against Mechagodzilla reimagines my favorite Godzilla monster, Mechagodzilla, into a literal ghost in the machine, serving as perhaps the single best direct sequel to the original Gojira (1954). With bombastic action sequences, an incredibly tight script, and some of the best cinematography in the franchise, Against Mechagodzilla paired up with Tokyo S.O.S. might be the single greatest 4 hours of kaiju cinema.

  9. Godzilla vs. Hedorah

Strange, trippy, and dripping with fun, Vs. Hedorah, or the title I prefer - Vs. The Smog Monster - is a psychedelic jaunt propelling Godzilla into the 1970s. The beginning of a Chicago Bulls Threepeat level-era of kinetic fun, stylish enemies, and heart-thumping action, this entry is truly unlike any other in the franchise thanks to some entertaining animated sequences and a strangely eerie villain. Also, my dad’s personal favorite!

  10. Godzilla vs. Biollante

Many people’s outright favorite, Vs. Biollante is a hauntingly beautiful tragedy riddled with budding anxieties regarding the dangers of genetic experimentation. Packed to the brim with some of the best visuals in the franchise as well as an opponent unlike any other, Biollante remains a cult classic among Godzilla fans for a reason. Did you know it was written by a dentist?
