Sam’s review published on Letterboxd:
Outrageously good as a pure cinematic experience. Even in a regular screening you could feel the floor vibrate at those explosions.
Takes everything great about the first one, visuals and tone, and improves on them while also adding more of a defined story and character arc for Paul.
While it took me a little bit to get fully into it (I don’t know, maybe I wasn’t in the right mood or whatever) I definitely see where all the praise is coming from.
However, I would say that there were still a couple things that bugged me. I feel slightly like they were trying to fit too much into one movie after the first in the series had so little. And while it didn’t feel like a nearly three hour movie, I do think that some of the pacing at times wasn’t the best.
Small gripes aside, it’s obviously great as we’ve come to expect from Denis Villeneuve. I trust him enough as a filmmaker as well to not give us a ‘hey Paul’s actually not too bad a guy’ arc in the next movie.
