Coogler channels history through folklore; beneath its gothic horror frame, Sinners is a story about memory, exploitation, and survival. Its supernatural metaphor is loud, but its truths are quieter: the pain of erasure, the haunting of legacy, and the resilience of those who keep singing through it.
The film drags and stumbles in structure, but never in intent, it's also not afraid to camp and comic book it up when it needs to, chanelling a tad of Luhrmann.
At its heart, Sinners is about what gets taken—and what endures....like vampires I guess.
