Look, this movie has some bizarre pacing, cute albeit entirely unnecessary callbacks to previous films, way too many characters to balance (very funny for the character you gave nothing to do to say out loud "there's nothing for me to do"), and a general unmistakable sense that they did not plan out what to do next before finishing the previous film.

BUT the climax was one of the most insane things I've ever seen onscreen and it made my palms sweatier than they've ever been in my life so there is absolutely no world where I could ever call this a bad movie. Disappointing, maybe. But you better believe I ed the rest of my audience in giving it a standing ovation.

I think what ultimately prevents the magnificent Andor from elevating the installment it leads into, whereas something like Clone Wars did wonders for heightening the tragedy of Revenge of the Sith, is the fact that this film simply does not hinge on Cassian as a character the way Sith hinges on Anakin. Sure, I got more emotional at Cassian's fate in this film knowing the full context of his life, but before you get to that (and the ittedly still great final battle), you have to deal with bizarre pacing, an overstuffed roster of characters, some truly groan-worthy cameos, and the unmistakable stench of reshoots that don't paint this as the most cohesive film in the world. To top that all off, this simply isn't Cassian's story anymore. He still plays a crucial role, but this makes for a jarring and disted pseudo-finale to Andor, which I wouldn't mind so much if the actual Andor finale wasn't so insistent that you watch this movie to get the full picture. I know why they did that, it makes sense. But it doesn't stop me from wishing this film was a whole lot better. Krennic wasn't fruity enough here like he was in the show

Over the past 2 months I've had the pleasure of reading the excellent Jim Henson biography by Brian Jay Jones, which does an absolutely tremendous job of painting a portrait of who this guy is both creatively and personally. I wasn't expecting this documentary to include nearly the same level of detail, but I was nonetheless rather disappointed at how little I got a sense of Jim as a person from this. After a while it mostly becomes an engaging enough doc about his most well-known projects (though The Storyteller and Jim Henson Hour really get shafted - would have liked a lot more elaboration on those!) Ultimately this was pretty solid but I would genuinely recommend the Defunctland miniseries if you want a better fleshed out of Jim and his career.

To be candid for a moment, I think a large reason I've become so engrossed in learning more about Henson's life is because I relate so heavily to his philosophies regarding work and creative endeavors. To be clear, what I do on YouTube is not even in the same stratosphere as what Henson does, and if you think we're even remotely comparable, you're an idiot. But I've found such fulfillment leading my merry band of editors on creative projects similar to how Jim led his band of puppeteers, and it's only now, after reading about Jim's philosophy on always wanting to keep busy at some new creative endeavor, have I come to with my own obsession with never stopping working. Jim had the right idea; if work is fun, fulfilling, and not something you dread or are being exploited by, then it really is the best thing in the world to be doing. I've done at least a tiny bit of work on something every day now for well over a year, and knowing that work all goes towards something at least a couple people out there will enjoy makes every second worth it. I really can't muster that much excitement over the fact that I will soon have 2 million subscribers on YouTube, because the truth is, I would still be making my dumbass videos even if I only had two subscribers.

All this to say, thanks Jim. Your work has greatly inspired me; your work ethic, even more so.

Holy shit dude!!!!!!!! As awesome as the action and stunts in this series are, I think I'm a far bigger sucker for the espionage stuff that centers on the characters and what makes them tick. Grace's notable fear in the third act as a newbie to this game compelled me a lot more than the latest (still awesome, but expected) Tom Cruise stunt. Same goes for Benji and the bomb (he loves his friends <3)

THIS is the dramatic uptick in stakes I was missing from the last two. That news headline about Joe Biden being afraid of AI after watching this makes complete sense now. So damn excited to see how this ends. I like how Jeremy Renner's character just disappeared and no one ever mentions him again

HOLY SHIT THAT'S A HELICOPTER CHASE SCENE

This one's probably got the best third act in the series, which I think goes a long way in of making up for how rehashy the story is. Villain uses Julia to get to Ethan like in 3, threat of nuclear fallout like in 4, the same villainous group and the return of the main villain from 5. Hell, even the helicopters are an (albeit far expanded) echo of 1's climax. Yes, the action still rules, but I found this story to be a bit less engaging than the last 3. Cavill is a great addition though, and this one's got some of the best deception scenes in the series (rad that Wolf Blitzer was down for that). And yes, the rumors are true, this one actually made me cry a bit at the end (a series first).

I don't quite see one of the best action films of all time here, but it's another link in this exhilarating chain of a franchise. 4 bangers in a row with more to come apparently, how do you manage that?

Something about the subdued nature of Rebecca Ferguson's performance made her character a bit hard to emotionally connect with, which resulted in this story not drawing me in quite as much. On the flip side, this is best one for Benji and his relationship with Ethan so far by a long shot. Making him the damsel in the third act was a stroke of sheer brilliance. The underwater scene is not only nail biting, it's a great showcase for how thoroughly Benji believes in Ethan even as Ethan expresses visible unease about his capabilities for the first time. Real heartwarming stuff.

I also fw the opera scene so much obviously. McQuarrie's direction is very capable and solid, I think I need to see more from him to fully understand why he got to make 4 of these though

BRAD FUCKING BIRD. It's honestly ridiculous how perfectly his skills at crafting tightly-woven animated action sequences translated to the live-action medium. Legit could not breathe as Ethan scaled the Burj Khalifa. Said out loud "there's no way" when he tossed one of the gloves aside. Had to rewind when he attempted to swing back inside and bonked his head because I simply couldn't believe my eyes - and in the process of doing so, I noticed that this was an hour in! This thing just flies by and does not feel its length at all, it's so engrossing!

Honestly the first one of these movies to really earn the title of the franchise. The dual meeting sequence, the sandstorm chase, the sheer down-to-the-wire nature of the finale; I can't believe they pulled this thing off. This applies to the characters and the filmmakers!

Cannot believe it apparently gets better from here.

My favorite so far, with about a million asterisks on that statement.

Love the opening scene, love the villain, love the team camaraderie, the story was exciting, even the romance was sweet dammit! Michael Giacchino the king that you are!

The action set pieces were also great, you know, whenever they weren't blurry as shit with a bunch of shaky cam. The writing was pretty good, except when it wasn't! Luther asking Ethan if he's ever slept with his sister is the exact moment I ed what Kurtzman and Orci are capable of. Lindsey's message suddenly being viewable at the most plot-convenient time without any explanation as to why was clever foreshadowing for R2-D2 randomly waking up to provide the final piece of Luke's map. Again, it's like poetry, sort of, they rhyme.

Odd that the movie randomly decides to come out against neoconservatism in the last 20 minutes. Like, cool, but it would've been cooler if this was the theme of the entire movie instead of just being thrown in as a lazy surface level Bush-era critique, you know?

Real shame Maggie Q and Laurence Fishburne aren't gonna be in more of these movies. I hope the hilarious way Tom Cruise runs at the end of this comes back.

Def missing something here. Sally and Brian's relationship is just so much less interesting than the theme of escapism amidst creeping fascism, and especially the struggles of Fritz and Natalia who aren't even a footnote in the narrative by the end. The songs are great but they don't serve the typical musical purpose of advancing the plot or characters. They advance the theme very well and that's fine, but is this really a shining paragon of musical storytelling if the leading man doesn't utter a single note?

Oh well, not for me and that's fine. I've heard the stage musical is drastically different so I'll give that a watch at some point.

A list dedicated to those movies with an ending and/or themes that rocked me to my core, to the point where I needed to sit in the theater for an extended period of time, alone with my thoughts, trying to process everything I just witnessed on screen.
Not necessarily a list of my favorite films (a lot of films I adore don't quite fit this criteria), but I think it's safe to say that I liked every film on this list to some extent. In addition, there's only recent releases since older movies don't fit the "watching the theaters" criteria.
Lady Bird is the queen of this list cause the post-movie introspection continued throughout the car ride home and well into the evening hours
