watched this w friends and it was fun but the movie itself was a little boring

my mom made me watch this ("a true cinephile would watch any movie" idk who she's calling a cinephile i hate movies and especially this one) a few months ago and it was straight up not a good time. made worse by me simultaneously going through a breakup via text and taking "pee breaks" to cry one out in the bathroom. thank u hugh jackman's dirty wig

this was... good? except i don't see why it got all the hype it did. i'm a sucker for dim-lit arthouse horror (sue me) but slow burn's gotta build up to something. in this case, the flame would've had to be closer to an explosion for it to be worth the hour-long wait for a mere spark, no? it says some interesting stuff, just not presented with much of the ingenuity i expected or even much of the horror. it's also the type to make you more uncomfortable than scared. which is fine but it's definitely not the kind of horror movie you can turn on during a family movie night without getting a "wtf are you making us watch" from either of your parents. maybe that's the problem, maybe i should've watched it alone. we'll see if i ever get around to it.

so this was actually bad right like it wasn't just me being irrationally annoyed at things

part of me is like "yeah duh everyone here and their grandmas too but they don't have the money to say that in a way that's as aesthetically pleasing as you can" and the other part of me is like "what the fuck i was literally just thinking about that this morning how does he know" and the other other part of me is like "when will he just shut the fuck up about being plagued by so much self awareness" till i realised that that's exactly what i do too so idk man it got me laughing and tearing up in the moment but now i just feel more like shit so thank you jeff bezos. 3 stars for the content and the utilisation of that lcd projector earns its own half a star.

i can sit here and give you a critical analysis which believe you me i am perfectly capable of doing but this made me feel all sorts of things so that's as far as it goes. chest aches and tired cheeks from smiling and the weird sore in your nose when you're tearing up. they're clouding my judgment. maybe it's more than enough for this one. there's only so much you can say in just slightly over an hour.

everything about this infuriates me. i dont think it deserves a rating because i dont know how to rate it. full disclosure, i think i'll have to let it simmer and reread it a couple hundred times for a couple hundred years before i can write something anywhere near sincerity.

i dont like things i dont understand. everything needs meaning. i guess in that sense, this movie succeeded in scaring the shit out of me it's just so fucking absurd. i cant do absurd. especially when i think i know some of it but then i try to understand the rest of it and string it all together only to find that it's impossible to do that. it doesnt make sense and i dont like that it doesnt make sense.

that's a lot of words instead of just saying "i'm stupid", which is what i actually do believe but at the same time don't want to. congrats charlie kaufman i hate movies now
