Dune: Part Two

2024

★★★★★

If you liked Dune: Part One you won't be disappointed. While I did find almost all of this even better then the first, oddly there were parts which I felt weren't as good. That's really nit-picking though and it's elements such as how long it takes to get from one chunk of the story to the next. The best example I can think of is the piece on the Harkonnen home world where we meet Feyd-Rautha in the arena. It's needed to display his ability and ensure that when he fights Paul we understand that Feyd-Rautha is deadly, and there's some good Bene Gesserit politics explained, but it was just a little distracting.

But I'm overstating the issue. I loved spending the time in Villeneuve's realisation of Frank Herbert's work. The details, the flavours, the feel, everything feels exceptionally well done. Zendaya and Chalamet both give superb central performances and somehow none of the cast get lost in the meticulous world-building going on. Rebecca Ferguson does superb work and has probably the greatest transitional arc here, and as always she's pretty much perfect - never given a bad performance. This film goes harder, louder, faster, the war is erupting and we've got front row seats. It's a superb film, and yet again that score and those audio signatures throughout the film keep you anchored within it. Many beautifully cinematic moments with tons of heart, from Paul riding his first worm, to Gurney's stunned realisation that the young pup still lives and the final lingering shot on Zendaya's burning expression - I really loved this. I'm already looking forward to the triple bill!

Edit: Days later and Dune has left me with a thirst, to see it again, on a larger screen. Reading others reviews of this (of any film) I always find interesting, especially when they differ from mine and explain why. Cinema is art. Different people like different things, and I'm happy when a well written review can explain whatever it likes/dislikes. But I can't get on board with the gate keepers who insist on telling others how wrong they are. The film is what it is and people connect with it and are getting great enjoyment from it. I'm just not sure telling people they're idiots because they like a film is a good look...
