If someone I was deeply in love with for twelve years told me to watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I think I’d shoot myself in the head with a shotgun

In all seriousness though, Nora’s character is so interesting and so tragic, being confronted with a cultural disconnect that spirals into almost asking the question of “what if” when she knows she shouldn’t and she doesn’t want to either. Song’s writing and Lee’s performance are on overdrive here, Yoo is great too though. I kept laughing when I shouldn’t have, but that ending shut me up. Heartbreaking stuff, if this ever happened to me I’d have a crash out that would echo for generations (and by “this” I mean being in Haesung, Nora, or Arthur’s place).

Any attempt to make the plot more than a simple revenge story works against the movie, but that’s not really saying much since almost everything else just has that Stahelski magic. I don’t wanna spoil it but several specific sequences (the grenades, the plates, and that one weapon at the end) had me grinning like an idiot. Dolby theater works overtime for the movie too. I’ve missed this world so much, and I need a million more movies in it immediately.

A bunch of middle schoolers were running laps around the auditorium like it was their personal playground, but even they sat down (even if they didn’t shut up) when the movie decided to get really mean. I think it’s very well made but maybe just not for me, but I’ll continue watching the Phillippous’ movies as long as people keep gassing them up. Sally Hawkins is really good in this, turning in a performance that’s equal parts psychotic and sympathetic.

Really cute, loved how it adapts the premise of the Big Fight comic and draws inspiration from other stories but still largely ends up doing its own thing. Netflix joke at the end was so stupid (in a good way though). Need another one of these ASAP

Miracles strung between one another, overcoming impossible odds through sheer will and human connection. Some would call it flimsy writing, but it’s just biblical both thematically and by definition.

Shooting this movie on film would have been so saucey, what with the film’s focus on the ana a world that cannot trust the digital. Bringing Lorne Balfe back would have made for an even better score, even if the submarine scene was perfect with what Max Aruj and Alfie Godfrey wrote. Laying off on the franchise flashbacks in favor of explaining Gabriel a bit more would have been nice. But in spite of all that, it’s still too good.

Do yall think Pom Klementieff would think I’m chill

Yeah I know I just bought this Blu-ray but I’m never watching this again. Fully locked in as opposed to my first watch and it hit so much harder. Felt an unbearable weight building over most of the movie and that second to last scene killed me. The script and performances are so precise in their subtlety, painting enough of the picture for there to be one but leaving enough for the audience to fill in as they feel. Mescal and Corio are too good, Wells is way too good.

Fun as hell and reasonably creative with the time loop stuff, Christopher McQuarrie is too good

Leave it to Park Chan-wook to make a movie equal parts hilarious, gruesome, and heartbreaking. Beautiful on 35 mm.

Our lives are the sum of our choices.

Or more accurately, everyone’s lives are the sum of their owns and everyone else’s choices. As Hunt’s world collapses on itself, approaching an end Lane claimed was always coming, his desperation sets the tone for all three hours of the movie, as past choices and gambles gone right and wrong alike spiral (through funny retcons or otherwise) into his most insane endeavor to save the world yet again. The Final Reckoning (together with Dead Reckoning) is a marvel to behold, an epic of biblical proportions, which is only appropriate given how much the Christian allegory is explicitly stated. Morality is far less grey than it was in Fallout, a decision that allows the movie to (self-)mythologize Hunt in service of a grander thesis. His choices and his gambles have saved and helped so many people but endangered or hurt so many others; here, for every Donloe there is a Briggs. Yet he’s still the sole solution to the problems he inadvertently creates, both literally for saving the world and also being capable of absolving himself and others alike for the greater good.

Somehow so much better the second time around (though I think I prefer Dolby over IMAX even with the aspect ratio expansions). It probably helped to go into the movie with knowledge of things I didn’t like (and the absence of things I expected), but it also probably helped me appreciate the movie for what it is. Maybe I’ll raise this to 5 stars by the next watch.

Kills are ruthless, the formula evolves a bit for the better, Tony Todd farms aura, and the movie is just funny as hell in general. I’ll dock a star if they ever make a seventh because this is the most appropriate last movie this series could ever have.

I could barely keep track of the plot or shaky cam action (which I didn’t feel was offensive in The Raid but felt kinda excessive here) but it was still kinda fun I think

McQ and Cruise’s follow-up to their distress-ridden seventh MI movie is an eighth that only dials up the frenzy; the result is unsurprisingly even more ambitious and bombastic. The world-building is ever-so-slightly more fleshed out, the stakes are graver than ever before, and the set pieces easily clear the already insanely high bar set by the series’s other movies. I’m truly baffled by a host of creative decisions (regarding the score, the side characters, themes that carry over from Dead Reckoning, and the level of self-awareness) and technical decisions (cinematography, pacing, and editing mainly), but I want to sit on them a bit before my next watch. Ultimately, though, I’m moved.

A new day brings a new burden.

The back half of a two, maybe three, part thesis by Cruise and McQuarrie. Top Gun Maverick oozes confidence in its narrative and its storytelling, a reflection of a movie star still in his prime, operating in an industry that threatens to leave his mind behind. Dead Reckoning Part One, in the other hand, is far from confident; there’s an air of uncertainty and of fear towards this movie’s disruptive “change” as it threatens not just Cruise’s character here but the world at large. For two hours, the movie is frantic and claustrophobic; it is stylistically jarring in its series-first full digital cinematography, constant Dutch angles, and asymmetric framing. The tension is dialed up to 120% as Hunt scrambles to save everyone he can, while his sense of understanding or even control slips from his grasp. But isn’t one of those movies that is “bad on purpose”; its visual language evolves with the confidence of its main characters. The Dubai airport scene is shot with the same confidence as the characters until the mission is turned on its head, and when the third act rolls and the characters are back at it, the movie almost feels like a return to form for the franchise: the narrative progresses with the deception, stunts, and action sequences that have become signature to the series, and the camerawork feels much more alive again. Not to say the stakes go anywhere; Grace is put to her limit, and Ethan almost goes back on his word with Luther to not kill Gabriel, a visceral reaction that 1) is delivered really well by Cruise but also 2) almost returns Hunt to the emotionally scattered state he was in through the first two acts.

I’m stunned by the ambition of this movie to follow up one of the most universally acclaimed action thrillers ever with a feverish, 160-minute manifestation of the living emotions and fears of its main star, racing against something intangible to save his world from something he may not fully understand, doing all he knows he can do and hoping that’s enough. But more than that, I’m in awe that it actually coheres and still delivers an insanely entertaining experience. I miss the tightness and visual grit and overall clearness of McQ’s previous two MI movies, but I can’t not appreciate something so  challenging to itself. It’s 2 AM, I’m less than 24 hours away from watching The Final Reckoning for the first time. I’m only barely ready for this series to end.

Funny as hell, I don’t know when in this series I went from somewhat scared to just completely reveling in the absurdity of it all, but this movie felt insanely unserious (for better or for worse). I had the ending spoiled for me a couple days ago but I’m sure it would have been insane if I didn’t know it was coming. The twist on avoiding death in this one is pretty neat, but it’s not given as much weight as it could have (but then again, this is Final Destination). Also ending the movie with a “best of” compilation of the series’s best kills is an insane choice but justified by the inclusion of Tony Todd aura.

Gigapeak. Hunt is tested like in no other M:I movie, at odds with an ideological opposite but physical equal. But the film is equally deft in Hunt’s own moral code, forcing him to constantly choose between a utilitarian “greater good” or strict adherence to his own values at an uncertain and potentially worse cost. This might be my favorite performance from Cruise as Hunt, namely in how he gets to show the character truly at his wit’s end, and that’s only halfway through the movie before the stakes skyrocket even further in the third act. In true Hollywood fashion, he prevails, but the tension only grows tighter through every minute of the runtime, even if you already know the ending. True technical brilliance on display here; McQ and his collaborators are incredibly deliberate in the sound mix (specifically in the lack of dialogue in certain sequences or sound altogether), the edit, the camerawork, and the score to construct an experience that balances so many moving parts in its narrative, while still being entertaining as hell. Can’t believe this franchise is coming to a close with just two more movies after this.

Blues wasn’t forced on us like that religion. We brought this with us from home. It’s magic what we do. It’s sacred and big.

Trauma begets violences, begets more trauma and violence. But always alongside the ability to heal from community and spirituality, even amidst those who would co-opt culture at the expense of those who foster it. Every watch of Sinners convinces me that Remmick is one of (if not the single) most fascinating film antagonists of the 2020s. There’s such a interesting dialogue framed around Sammie about his relationships with his music, his father, and his religion, the last of which Remmick serves as an excellent foil for being as parasitic and malicious as he is. Brilliantly entangled with the more fantastical lore about what vampires are in this movie, Remmick needing Sammie’s music (marked by his father as the devil’s music) to overcome his own people’s trauma only underscores the importance of Sammie’s choice to leave Louisiana and keep playing the blues. Such a spiritual, horny, terrifying, beautiful, funny, and most of all sincere movie. One quadrillion dollars for Ludwig Göransson and Ryan Coogler.

Omega peak. McQ is firing on all cylinders here: every performance, every musical beat, every action sequence, and every cut builds tension towards an incredible payoff in the end (all while being pretty funny; I kinda miss Jeremy Renner in the series). If Rebecca Ferguson told me to run away with her I wouldn’t be as strong as Ethan. Alec Baldwin monologue is some #real shit. If I had one point of criticism, it would be that the “main” plane stunt of the movie doesn’t carry as much weight as I would have liked (as with the Burj Khalifa climb in Ghost Protocol), especially compared to the underwater heist and motorcycle chase later in the same movie. But it still kicks off a movie in a really fun way so I’m not complaining too much.

A lot more fun than I it being. Giacchino score is very obviously a Giacchino score (for better or for worse). That bit where Ethan jumps across the tower into the window made me hold my breath, even thought I feel like I’ve seen this movie countless times. Can’t believe this was Bird’s first live action movie and he went straight to IMAX 70mm for the big stunt.

Fun movie, obviously this movie laid the tonal groundwork for pretty much the rest of the series, yet something about it didn’t quite move me until the second half or so (probably because I was eating dinner, but also something about the direction just felt a bit bland? Maybe I just have an unchecked bias against Abrams, or maybe his style here just felt so aggressively rooted in 2006). Extra half star for PSH aura farming

Set your heart ablaze.

I’ll never finally going back to the movie theaters after the vaccines rolled out back in 2021 and getting to see and hear this absolute spectacle. The CGI hasn’t necessarily aged well (it probably wasn’t good back when the movie released) and it’s written pretty plainly, but the latter works in its favor enough for hitting its core emotional beats, introducing a reasonably compelling villain, and setting the stage for action with insane animation. Can’t wait for the Infinity Castle movies.

Only 82 minutes but genuinely a waste of time, the only remotely creative kill was the pool one

Tom Cruise is now as old as Jon Voight was when this movie was released, but it’s crazy to imagine that old fart doing stuntwork on an actual moving train like Cruise was in Dead Reckoning (that’s more of a testament to Cruise’s work ethic and the evolution of stunt and effects technology over the last 30 years).

Incredibly unserious movie, but tolerably so for most of the movie because it’s still cool as hell. Any comparisons with Bullet Train are pretty accurate in this regard, but I was dialed in through all the absurdity of the last third of the movie. Chandran is pretty good in this but Harnett is such a beast; between this and Trap I’m loving him doing this kind of shit.

Series goes from figurative death porn to literal death porn but it’s still fun as hell. Extra half star for the score in the opening credits and that one match cut

Lawrence and Henry lowkey carry the movie but it’s still a really compelling story independent of them

You’re not alone.

A little overhyped but still a solid movie, probably the MCU’s best in a while but I feel like I might have missed a couple movies since Wakanda Forever. Pugh and Pullman are so good, and their characters serving as the emotional core of the movie did so much toe elevate it. If nothing else, Feige has gotten me excited for F4 and Doomsday + wanting to rewatch old MCU stuff (something about hearing the Avengers theme did something for me), but we’ll see if that sentiment lasts.

Efficient, emotional, and really uncomfortable (in a good way). Coogler had it in him from the start.

Relentless despair, grappling with one’s place as an individual in the perceived downfall of humanity and Earth, struggling to reconcile well meaning intentions with unfortunate consequences or no effect at all. Schrader (and Dynan) paint a claustrophobic, uncomfortable picture through ostensibly formal cinematography, from the static camera (until it counts) to the color grade to even the aspect ratio choice. Hawke is sublime; little else to say. Might bump this to 5 stars in the morning. A lot to think about.

So earnest in its spirituality and tender sense of community, while still being so funny and terrifying enough. I could have done with another hour but it was perfect how it was anyway.

Incredible work for a short from film school student (not just any student I guess)

Despite its base premise being quite removed from the game, it was pretty cool to see most of the games other narrative and horror elements alike be reused, repurposed, or reimagined in a way that felt fun. Sandberg is obviously having too much fun killing his cast but it works well enough, even if it gets silly. The trauma stuff was dumb but whatever.

There’s good in him… I know… I know there’s still…

What a profoundly confusing experience. Right from when the opening crawl hit, I thought this would be a funny watch. I knew my nostalgia for Star Wars had largely eroded after I got out of episode I in theaters last year, and I didn’t initially feel that same spark when this movie kicked off. And even during the movie, the lack of refinement in the script, the odd performances, and the weightless VFX felt inescapable at times.

But Lucas swings big to end the trilogy, and maybe that lost nostalgia helped me appreciate the movie even more. I felt less so focused on Reddit funny moments (one guy tried to start applause after the “hello there” line) and super dialed in on the incredibly operatic feel of the entire movie. Anakin’s political allegiances, moral com, and emotional turmoil all colliding in just the wrong way to leave him susceptible to Palpatine’s manipulation; the slow but steady rise of fascism from a self-consuming status quo (blunt as hell, timeless as ever); the third act, from the final fight on Mustafar to Pe’s funeral and Vader’s rebirth after. You can’t help but bask in Lucas’s ambition, imperfections and all.

Maybe I should rewatch 4-8 soon…
