Deadpool & Wolverine

2024

89

Nerd culture is eating itself from the inside, with films and TV shows that only exist to reward audiences for the niche knowledge they’ve accumulated about their favorite franchises — Deadpool & Wolverine is the biggest offender yet.

You could watch Iron Man on opening night and enjoy the film without any prior knowledge of the characters… but Marvel threw in a quick wink for the hardcore fans in the after-credits and the rest is history: the MCU is born, it becomes Disney’s golden…

Old School

2003

Rewatched

Todd Phillips' idea of comedy and what men are like is just insufferable. I love mean comedies, Bad Santa is one of my favorites, but Old School has no heart and a lot of the problems I have with this movie start and end with Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn's characters; nobody is truly like this in their 30s and if they are I really don't care for a movie about them as the protagonists.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

2023

★★ 3

I enjoyed the first Aquaman so I can’t help but find this sluggish and unfocused sequel disappointing. Even the action set-pieces are a let down, with weightless characters that move like rubber — it’s a James Wan film, you would expect at least one memorable set-piece but most of it feels like cutscenes from Mortal Kombat.

The best part is Jason Mamoa and Patrick Wilson’s chemistry, their relationship is funny and very much Thor and Loki, unfortunately it takes almost an…

Magic Mike

2012

★★ Watched

I can't quite nail what's missing, it should be more fun but the story lacks forward momentum and it's something I've seen in other Soderbergh movies... High Flying Bird comes to mind.

I don't think it's a skill he lacks either because he excels at pacing in Contagion and Ocean's 11.

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

1989

★★ Rewatched

I enjoy dumb stoner movie but this one just didn't do it for me... I being mildly amused the first time I watched it in high school and decided to revist it in honor of the Keanunaissance but also because the 3rd one is around the corner and this movie seem is looked at veryfondly by a lot of people. I just got bored by it once they started time-traveling; switched it off soon after Napoleon s them.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

2019

★★ Watched

It's too loud, it's too dumb, it's too long.

It's a poor man's Mission Impossible. The fight choreography looks good but the camera cuts too much, moves around a lot and is too zoomed in, I can't pay attention to these fight sequences in a post-John Wick world.

It's too cartoony, everyone seems invincible, the rapple-down fight against the skyscraper felt like a Looney Toons episode.

But with all that said, this thing had potential, and it's peppered with flashes…

Three Identical Strangers

2018

★★ Liked Watched

The story itself is fascinating but I honestly feel like it could have been a 1 hour documentary.

The ant²

2025

★★★ Liked Watched

The idea of autistic John Wick sounds silly and yet it works because Ben Affleck fully commits to playing against type — every tic and socially awkward interaction reveals a side of him we’ve never seen before. His tightly wound performance clashes brilliantly with Jon Bernthal as the alpha younger brother, and it’s their fire and ice dynamic that turns this into a buddy comedy, elevating this sequel past its predecessor.

In a film packed with assassinations and convoluted mysteries,…

Venom: The Last Dance

2024

★★★ Liked Watched

A real stroke of genius to turn the dark, violent, and way too serious Venom into a buddy comedy with Tom Hardy doing yet another silly voice. And Hardy deciding on this difficult performance for his “franchise” series is another proof of him being one of our best actors.

I’m actually surprised by how much I enjoyed this, it’s so different from your standard superhero films and ridiculous in the way only comicbooks are — the action is solid, it’s…

Transformers One

2024

★★★ Liked 4

Take the superhero origin story template, add a touch of Spider-Verse’s “Anyone can wear the mask” message and mix in the First Class Professor X / Magneto dynamic with Optimus and Megatron and that’s Transformers One.

The story uses familiar tropes and rushes some emotional beats but it’s a good refresh for the Transformers universe… it doesn’t reinvent the wheel and it doesn’t need to, it’s a prequel that hardcore fans will love without losing newcomers to the series.

I thought they were all suppose to be happy back on Transformers planet. -Pann, Cybertron historian

The Speed Cubers

2020

★★★ Liked 4

Come for the closer look at the competitive Rubik’s Cube scene, stay for the deep dive into the power of friendship through a rivalry between the two best cubers in the world.

The Speed Cubers is enjoyable enough but I almost found it too wholesome, it plays like a 40-minute long version of those YouTube videos highlighting the bond between an unlikely pair of animals “Pitbull and duck are best friends!” — I needed a little bit more drama, there has to be more real-life weirdos who are into competitive speed cubing!

The Bikeriders

2023

★★★ Liked 1

“I wanna watch The Motorcycle Boys!” Obviously The Bikeriders became an instant wifey request, it stars two of her favorite actors, Tom Hardy with another spicy accent paired up with Austin Butler and his dreamy blue eyes, high cheekbones, and low husky voice.

The Bikeriders is bootleg Scorsese, chronicling the rise and fall of one of the first biker gangs… it checks all the boxes but lacks that propulsive energy that Marty fuels his gangster dramas with.

The pacing feels intentional,…
