Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

2023

★★ 3

I enjoyed the first Aquaman so I can’t help but find this sluggish and unfocused sequel disappointing. Even the action set-pieces are a let down, with weightless characters that move like rubber — it’s a James Wan film, you would expect at least one memorable set-piece but most of it feels like cutscenes from Mortal Kombat.

The best part is Jason Mamoa and Patrick Wilson’s chemistry, their relationship is funny and very much Thor and Loki, unfortunately it takes almost an…

Venom: The Last Dance

2024

★★★ Liked Watched

A real stroke of genius to turn the dark, violent, and way too serious Venom into a buddy comedy with Tom Hardy doing yet another silly voice. And Hardy deciding on this difficult performance for his “franchise” series is another proof of him being one of our best actors.

I’m actually surprised by how much I enjoyed this, it’s so different from your standard superhero films and ridiculous in the way only comicbooks are — the action is solid, it’s…

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

2019

★★ Watched

It's too loud, it's too dumb, it's too long.

It's a poor man's Mission Impossible. The fight choreography looks good but the camera cuts too much, moves around a lot and is too zoomed in, I can't pay attention to these fight sequences in a post-John Wick world.

It's too cartoony, everyone seems invincible, the rapple-down fight against the skyscraper felt like a Looney Toons episode.

But with all that said, this thing had potential, and it's peppered with flashes…

Solo: A Star Wars Story

2018

★★★★ Liked Rewatched

This movie is so much better than I .... I don't think I was fair in judging this the first time I watched it because I was just coming off The Last Jedi which is my favorite Star Wars but also has deep themes whereas this one is just a fun low-stakes adventure. It's easy to appreciate a simple space adventure today, especially after watching Mandalorian and the Clone Wars and Rebels cartoons.

Rundown of everything I loved during this…

Bad Boys for Life

2020

★★★ Liked 3

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence must have been looking at the growth of the Fast and Furious franchise and realized that Bad Boys could have tapped into that market. The concept of family has always been central to these movies, and somehow it took us almost 20 years to get a 3rd entry but it was well worth the wait.

Bad Boys 2020 reckons with the same themes as the last movie, Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) is too old for…

Ambulance

2022

★★★ Liked 3

Take the bromance at the center of Den of Thieves, sprinkle the loud gunfire from Heat, mix it with a dose of the highway chase from Speed and the non-stop action of Fury Road... this sounds like the greatest movie ever right? Ok now blend it all with Michael Bay and you get Ambulance, a fun and relentless ride that is only held back by bloat, poor editing and copaganda.

But it's definitely worth watching, Jake Gyllenhaal's character is right…

Magic Mike

2012

★★ Watched

I can't quite nail what's missing, it should be more fun but the story lacks forward momentum and it's something I've seen in other Soderbergh movies... High Flying Bird comes to mind.

I don't think it's a skill he lacks either because he excels at pacing in Contagion and Ocean's 11.

Blackhat

Nothing beats that feeling when you watch a movie and you realize you watching something really fucking good. This is another Mann masterpiece that you just gotta vibe with. I dismissed this upon release just like Miami Vice and I was wrong! It all works, the love story, the bromance, the hacking and the insane little chase and shootout at the end... It has the same thing as Heat where this is really a movie about people who are really good at what they do.

I loved it, gotta get my hands on the director's cut now.

The Night Before

2015

★★★★ Liked Watched

Michael Shannon as a drug-dealer is everything I ever wanted that I didn't know I needed.

This really took me by surprise, it's nothing groundbreaking but it's an underrated stoner comedy. The main trio have good chemistry and they all have charisma, the jokes keep rolling at a steady pace and Seth Rogen tripping on all sorts of drugs is some of the funniest physical comedy I've seen. Minus 1 star for giving Jillian Bell nothing funny to do.

This Is the End

2013

★★★★ Liked 3

I love this movie because it doesn't shy away from its silly concept. You often have stories that ground their "out of the box" idea into reality, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Snakes on a Plane comes to mind, they never gets crazy enough for me to believe in the world or the characters they've created so I never buy into their silly premise. This is the End keeps getting weirder as the movie progresses: flying and giant demons, Pineapple…

Bad Boys: Ride or Die

2024

★★★ Liked 1

You got a prison fight with weights used as nunchucks, Chekov’s massive albino alligator, a surprisingly strong outing from Martin Lawrence that finely straddles the line between sincere and silly, and a 360 degree maximalist camera that would make Michael Bay’s head spin as it barrel rolls all over the action — it’s typical Bad Boys shenanigans, it won’t blow your mind but a summer blockbuster packed with so much energy, speed, and fun will always be a good time.

Old School

2003

Rewatched

Todd Phillips' idea of comedy and what men are like is just insufferable. I love mean comedies, Bad Santa is one of my favorites, but Old School has no heart and a lot of the problems I have with this movie start and end with Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn's characters; nobody is truly like this in their 30s and if they are I really don't care for a movie about them as the protagonists.
