The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie

2024

The Looney Tunes were a cultural institution that transcended age, language, and borders. My parents watched them in Iran, I loved them as a kid in , and my wife adored them growing up in California. They were universal and we’ve fucked them up for the next generation — blame streaming for killing traditional TV, blame the TikTok-ified attention spans, blame Warner Bros.’ endless identity crisis… it’s just been a masterclass in brand mismanagement. And that’s why seeing these characters…

Venom: The Last Dance

2024

★★★ Liked Watched

A real stroke of genius to turn the dark, violent, and way too serious Venom into a buddy comedy with Tom Hardy doing yet another silly voice. And Hardy deciding on this difficult performance for his “franchise” series is another proof of him being one of our best actors.

I’m actually surprised by how much I enjoyed this, it’s so different from your standard superhero films and ridiculous in the way only comicbooks are — the action is solid, it’s…

Transformers One

2024

★★★ Liked 4

Take the superhero origin story template, add a touch of Spider-Verse’s “Anyone can wear the mask” message and mix in the First Class Professor X / Magneto dynamic with Optimus and Megatron and that’s Transformers One.

The story uses familiar tropes and rushes some emotional beats but it’s a good refresh for the Transformers universe… it doesn’t reinvent the wheel and it doesn’t need to, it’s a prequel that hardcore fans will love without losing newcomers to the series.

I thought they were all suppose to be happy back on Transformers planet. -Pann, Cybertron historian

The Nice Guys

2016

★★★★ Liked 2

It’s clear that Goofy Gosling is the best version of Ryan Gosling, but rewatching The Nice Guys made me realize what was missing from The Fall Guy — Goofy Gosling needs to be paired up with a Grumpy Russell Crowe to really pop.

It’s the dynamics between the younger bumbling private investigator and the no-nonsense tough guy that makes the pairing hilarious.

I’d love a sequel but really I would be happy with any other combination of Goofy Gosling and Grumpy Crowe, put them in some heist action, a spy movie, a romcom, or a 3rd Russell Crowe film about exorcism, I’ll take anything.

Deadpool & Wolverine

2024

Nerd culture is eating itself from the inside, with films and TV shows that only exist to reward audiences for the niche knowledge they’ve accumulated about their favorite franchises — Deadpool & Wolverine is the biggest offender yet.

You could watch Iron Man on opening night and enjoy the film without any prior knowledge of the characters… but Marvel threw in a quick wink for the hardcore fans in the after-credits and the rest is history: the MCU is born, it becomes Disney’s golden…

The Bikeriders

2023

★★★ Liked 1

“I wanna watch The Motorcycle Boys!” Obviously The Bikeriders became an instant wifey request, it stars two of her favorite actors, Tom Hardy with another spicy accent paired up with Austin Butler and his dreamy blue eyes, high cheekbones, and low husky voice.

The Bikeriders is bootleg Scorsese, chronicling the rise and fall of one of the first biker gangs… it checks all the boxes but lacks that propulsive energy that Marty fuels his gangster dramas with.

The pacing feels intentional,…

Bad Boys: Ride or Die

2024

★★★ Liked 1

You got a prison fight with weights used as nunchucks, Chekov’s massive albino alligator, a surprisingly strong outing from Martin Lawrence that finely straddles the line between sincere and silly, and a 360 degree maximalist camera that would make Michael Bay’s head spin as it barrel rolls all over the action — it’s typical Bad Boys shenanigans, it won’t blow your mind but a summer blockbuster packed with so much energy, speed, and fun will always be a good time.

I’m…

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

2023

★★ 3

I enjoyed the first Aquaman so I can’t help but find this sluggish and unfocused sequel disappointing. Even the action set-pieces are a let down, with weightless characters that move like rubber — it’s a James Wan film, you would expect at least one memorable set-piece but most of it feels like cutscenes from Mortal Kombat.

The best part is Jason Mamoa and Patrick Wilson’s chemistry, their relationship is funny and very much Thor and Loki, unfortunately it takes almost an…

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

2023

★★★★ Liked 18

I had a huge Ninja Turtles phase as a kid, we talking cartoon, moviesvideo games, action figures, t-shirts, bed spreads, I was crazy for them. Not only were they cool, but their name was cool.

Teenage: I’m already sold, I was only 5 years old and all I knew about teenagers is that they got to do all the fun stuff: eat pizza, skateboard and kick ass.

Mutant: Pretty sure TMNT was the first time I heard the word mutant, I…

The Banshees of Inisherin

2022

Just give the Oscar to Colin Farrell's eyebrows, there is nothing funnier than:

😔 'Why don't you want to drink with me?'
😐 'Because you are feckin' dull'

I just love that this is a concept for a movie, a friend break-up! It's so compelling, how is this not a movie genre all on it's own? What drove McDonagh to come up with this story, is this something he has experienced?

I empathize with both Farrell and Gleeson because the…

GoodFellas

1990

★★★★★ Liked 5

I watched Goodfellas for the first time almost 20 years ago; I was entering that age where I was expanding my horizons with cinema by watching a new film from IMDBs list of top 250 movies every week. I would also read about who my favorite directors considered to be the best, and for guys like Spielberg and Lucas they would always have Scorsese listed as one of their favorite directors.

Scorsese’s work was still a blind spot for me…

Ambulance

2022

★★★ Liked 3

Take the bromance at the center of Den of Thieves, sprinkle the loud gunfire from Heat, mix it with a dose of the highway chase from Speed and the non-stop action of Fury Road... this sounds like the greatest movie ever right? Ok now blend it all with Michael Bay and you get Ambulance, a fun and relentless ride that is only held back by bloat, poor editing and copaganda.

But it's definitely worth watching, Jake Gyllenhaal's character is right…
