Initially, I was like no way is this going to live up to the insane hype. Maybe 5-10 minutes in, I was like is this the best movie of the year? LOL.
Future Academy Award winner Mikey Madison is a knockout. It’s a brave performance and MM allows the character to breathe, while exploding with a rough charm and confidence. Ani is an endlessly interesting character. I also would never want to get into a yelling match with her EVER.
I didn’t anticipate the film to be as funny as it is. The dialogue comes across unfiltered and quite masterful. Honestly, it sounds like actual people talking (well, screaming) to one another. However, I’m unsure if the film needed to be over 2hrs. I wasn’t bored but I definitely felt the runtime. There’s a few repetitive sequences in the second act with some of the characters searching for a certain someone. Sean Baker really needs to edit down his films.
Love is the real hustle. That ending left me devastated. 9/10.
