this time around three things really hit a lot harder~
1- the impact of the religious organization, and just thinking about how powerful a force that is. imagine believing in something your whole life with your entire being. you think you’re seeing it finally happen again and again but each time you’re wrong. and then all of a sudden it’s happening, you’re watching everything play out exactly how you were taught it would and how you prayed it would. i just keep thinking about stilgar’s face every time paul does something that was “as written”.
2- the cinematography. oh my gosh, fucking gorgeous. the shot of the soldiers walking in the desert at the beginning of the film and then they just…float upward, combined with the music. the closest i can get to describing what that felt like was if you’ve ever had a dream where the world was ending and you feel sort of, like what you’re watching is surreal and breaking your concept of your reality. there were so many shots in here that were just stunning. i fell in love.
3- i was sitting in the theater thinking about star wars and dune (i thought at first dune is based on star wars but found out later it’s the other way around), and i was thinking about the original star wars movies and how much those mean to people. i have friends that those movies are a core part of their childhood. they saw revenge of the sith in theaters. there are so many similarities between the movies obviously. these dune movies are our original movies. we’re watching the start of something. chandi/paul are our anakin/pe. and i was just struck by how cool that is.
also, fourth thing-this cast is obviously stacked. so many fantastic performances. rebecca ferguson was crazy good. austin butler did amazing, i was actually really sad when his character died i would have loved to see more of him. and man, timothee chalamet and zendaya are incredible. they really stole the whole movie for me. i can’t wait to see what they do next.
