if I had a nickel for every time the mcu made a good movie that also talked about mental health in a way i liked i would have two nickels.

(iron man 3 and now thunderbolts*)

which isn’t a lot, and i wish i had more nickels.

this movie was very wholesome, funny, and finally felt like marvel was trying to make just a good movie, not worrying about building a franchise. that just came naturally due to good writing and chemistry between all the characters.

also living in avengers tower 2012 energy is back on tumblr and i love it.

one of the things i love about joanna hogg’s movies is that you can learn something new, or have something hit differently every time you rewatch her movies.

i criticized the parents reaction to george yelling at oakley a lot more this time around, and their attitude of just sweeping it under the rug and advice to george to “let himself off the hook”. that’s sort of the problem he doesn’t want to see how his behavior is affecting his kid, and the still acts surprised when oakley acts the way he does.

it also stood out to me way more this time how anna’s husband didn’t want kids, and kept pushing that off which in turn made anna push it off as well. i wish we could know if the husband felt as much regret as anna does. i do wish we got to learn more about most of the main characters in general.

watched this with my boyfriend after work. we work on a farm so we were digging out tulip bulbs for a couple hours. and then we ordered food from chili’s and watched this movie. it was such a fun night.

i got really sucked into anakin’s story this time around. his fear and anxieties that ate him up and lead to his self fulfilling prophecies. watching him destroy himself because he was so afraid, too afraid to trust that there was a better way to handle it. i feel like i get like that sometimes. my anxiety becomes just one big spiral and i try to hold on tighter to whatever’s stressing me out in an effort to control it but it’s just exhausting and i sometimes end up pushing away the people i care about in an effort to make everything better on my own. watching it happen to anakin, it makes it seem so simple. but when you’re in the storm it’s a completely different story.

it was also just really cool to watch a star wars movie again. it’s been a while since i’ve done that. it was fun to get back into the world. and to nerd out a bit while watching it.

this movie is a living breathing thing, a work of art. everyone should go see this.

there is so much beauty at work here. from the storytelling to the cinematography to the sound design to the performances. everything was done with such care and intention and creativity. it tells a story not just about the supernatural but humanity and what it means to search for true freedom.

there were so many moments in here that had me screaming internally from just how good they were. that juke dancing scene was the craziest thing i’ve seen in cinema in a long time. it was just so fucking good!

michael b. jordan, unbelievable. i saw the movie a week ago and every time i think about it i forget that there weren’t two actors on screen. he brought the twins to life in a heartbreakingly beautiful way.

i haven’t been able to stop thinking about this movie actually. everyone should go see it. it deserves every second on the big screen and more.

But before the sun went down, I think that was the best day of my life. Was it like that for you?

No doubt about it. Last time I seen my brother. Last time I seen the sun. And just for a few hours, we was free.”

watched this with my sister and a friend from creative writing class. we rented out-“rented”-the room is free-one of the study rooms in our campus library and used the tv in there. it was a constant game between me with the remote and the tv with the volume. the voices were so low and the guns were so loud, I literally held the remote in my hands for the entire two hours so i could turn the volume up and down when necessary. i really want to know what it sounded like for the rest of the people in the library. we tried to be the least disruptive we could.

but it was very fun! it was both of their first times seeing this movie, and it was great to see what they thought of it.

i still really really love the camera work on this, it made the little nerd in me very happy. i love watching movies that look like this.

i looooove this movie.

no joke, this movie is so so special to me. it’s one of the very first movies i ever watched that made me go wow, movies are magic. i discovered it in seventh grade, when i had just started at a new middle school and making friends was hard. this movie became my whole world and all i wanted was to be a pirate and go on adventures and have a crew to have fun with. i still want those things if i’m being honest.

but anyways this movie still holds up, and still has magic. and it’s just so fun. like come on, the sword fight between will and jack in the blacksmith’s shop?? one of my favorite scenes in any movie ever.

also side note this was my original challengers

i was so obsessed with this movie lol. i realized just how obsessed tonight when i was watching it, and i realized i had practically the whole script memorized. especially certain parts. like i’m talking the words, the cadence in their voices, if they sighed, their movements. i hadn’t realized it all stuck that deep with me.

i think I needed that reminder honestly, that magic can still be found even when you feel like everything around you is dark. even when you feel like you’ve gone dark. and that’s partly why movies are so important, any movie. they hold magic that’s just waiting for you.

well hellooo 30 minute intro, long time no see. happy to have you, as always.

i expected this to be a casual watch while i did some homework, but i liked it! the camera work was really great, and the story really pulls you in.

it was fascinating how, on the surface everything steve was doing was normal-asking she told anyone about him, does she have family. all seemingly normal getting to know you questions. but because we know he’s supposed to be the villain of the story we can see right through him. sad that in real life it’s harder to tell who’s a threat and who’s not.

i wish we had gotten more on the “wife’s” story. was she even really his wife? did she start out as one of those girls or did she marry him and then find out everything but couldn’t leave? why was she helping him even when she no longer had to? i don’t know it raises a lot of questions.

this movie makes me want to never date anyone, ever again. no thank you, no.

it also made me feel, as a woman, just reminded of how strong the power imbalance is. it took three of them fighting him and it still was a struggle to take him down long enough to run away. which shows a good message for strength in numbers, but i kept thinking what it would be like if it was just one of them.

“do you only eat women?”
“yes. that’s where the market’s at. and women just taste better.”

we really are the prey, huh?

conflicted because i LOVED this, so much. the cinematography, the storytelling, the acting, the music. it all flowed together so beautifully. honestly it awoke something in me that movies haven’t in a very very long time.

but i can’t get past the use of ai-i know it was small but i don’t think the amount used matters, just the fact that it was used-and i’m still trying to figure out where i stand on the possible zionist messaging in it. both these things i found out after i watched the film and already fell halfway in love with it, so i don’t know. maybe some more research and a rewatch in the future will lead to a different review. but for now this is where i stand

thoughts, in no particular order:

-LEMON AND TANGERINE!!!!✨✨❤️❤️
-the scene where tangerine steps off the train, smokes a cigarette and the camera turns-shut the fuck up
-them giving logan a percy sticker was THE BEST THING
-lemon 😭😭😭
-channing “is this a sex thing?” tatum was one of my favorite parts
-also love brad pitt, sandra bullock, and channing tatum being besties in movies together in 2022
-the colors and the camera work make this really exciting
-tangerine😭😭😭
-this is one of the funniest things brad pitt has ever done
-LEMON?!
-thomas the tank engine was the last thing i expected but i get it now. diesel really is the fucking worst
-hated how gory it was but that’s just a personal preference
-all the storylines came together pretty well. the whole thing was engaging and had some crazy twists that left me curious about what would happen next
-brad pitt being confused, anxious, and using therapy talk through the whole situation is a mood, and honestly how most of my inner monologue goes
-i fell in love every single time tangerine talked i’m so sorry
-it really was fascinating watching ladybug deal with his luck as an outsider. to me it seemed like yes, he brought bad luck around with him, but he also got the good end of that bad luck quite a few times. yet he’s always worried about how the others are affected more. which says it really is all about how you look at things.
-making the water bottle a character and showing its journey was GENIUS
-this was so much fun, i hope this is not a stand alone movie

“i guess i’ve still got some more healing to do.”

“getting there though.”

“anyway, definitely going to have a lot of character.”

if this doesn’t perfectly sum up the point of the movie and the three brothers’ adventure then nothing does.

the youngest brother who still is hoping his mom will come around and love them the way she’s supposed to, so that he can stop looking for that love in other woman, and repeating the same cycles.

the middle child who doesn’t know what a lasting relationship that’s happy looks like, and he’s not sure it even exists. who pretends to be numb because it’s easier but is actually so emotional about everything, especially those he cares about the most.

the eldest child who, their whole life has tried to fill in where their parents fells short. but because their parents were the only role models they had, they had their own issues and could only do so much. trying to be there when their actual parents couldn’t, tried to give the emotional their parents wouldn’t. until it becomes too much and you’re crumbling under the pressure of what you tried to do, couldn’t do, should have done. until you end up purposefully crashing your bike into a tree.

not much happens in this movie, and yet everything happens in this movie. the brothers learn to trust each other again, they accept that their dad is gone and their mom cannot be the parent they need or hope her to be. they accept that they need each other and that’s okay, that it’s okay to be vulnerable and want your siblings. no one understands you like a sibling. no one has your back, or understands your world or point of view like a sibling.

this movie actually perfectly describes what it’s like to have a sibling. you all speak the same language, and you’re the only ones who do. you know how the other is going to react to something, what they want even if they don’t want to it it themselves. you want the best for them and you may know what that is, but you also have to sit there and watch as they figure it out for themselves.

I love love the scene of them running after the train and abandoning their suitcases. deciding to leave their baggage behind and choose the future together instead.

i wasn’t sure what to expect going in, but i enjoyed all parts of this journey. made me think about being a big sister and my siblings and our relationship. i think it’s fitting too, that i watched this with my sister, and tonight me, her, and our brother spend the better part of the evening spending time together and talking

haven’t watched this in a few years, and honestly i was worried that it wasn’t going to be as good this second time around. i’m so happy to be wrong.

and when i tell you the leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms and their kiss has haunted me ever since, i’m not exaggerating. that scene alone makes me want to give this movie five and a half stars.

so of course i rewatched that part when i got to the end. each time hoping that it would last just a liitle bit longer. this movie is such a beautiful visul of despair, something that can sometimes be hard to see. it grips you as you follow along toller, so by the time you get to the end you’re starving for any bit of hope, any little bit of brightness. so when toller and mary give it you don’t want it to end.

this time around watching it i’m choosing to ignore the fact that the door was locked though. this time when that scene haunts me i want the hope to haunt me as well.

thoughts i had during this movie:

-she was willing to RISK her LIFE for a shoe? and you want me to believe this is how women would act?
-if all it takes is knocking some woman to the ground, and being left alone with her at a park at dark for my fiancé to think he doesn’t want to marry me, then i don’t want him
-he does know they still put artificial stuff in brown m&ms right? doctor?
-he was just being a guy?? that’s his reasoning? so all guys go around looking for opportunities to find something “better” than his fiancé? (as he put it earlier in the movie)
-anything alex karev is doing here is 1000x better than anything done in grey’s anatomy
-they want me to hate his fiance, they’re trying to make me think she’s controlling and not right for him. but they can’t do it they can’t make me hate her i just feel bad for her
-i felt bad for mary at first too, until she had several chances to tell eddie’s fiancé about what happened and she just…didn’t? but she proceeds to say what a dick he is the whole movie? so why wouldn’t you try to save that girl from him?
-oh my gosh she got cheated on by her ex-fiancé and it scarred her from being in a serious relationship for 6 years, and now she’s going to do the SAME THING to someone ELSE??
-sir the fire is right there, why are you using a candle
-his I love you speech was basically just him saying i don’t know anything about you of substance but you’re super hot and i’m horny and bored of my current fiancé. after she JUST GOT DONE telling him how she didn’t feel like she was enough sometimes after a man chose another woman over her. and then he again is telling her essentially, hey you’re cute but i don’t like you enough to actually be with you.
-she’s not a hero for lying and making the fiancé think steve loves her when he doesn’t. it’s not a success just to get married for the sake of being married if you don’t actually love each other or make each other happy!!
-whyyyy would you get married at the same time as the biggest wedding of your career? that’s not very good planning if you ask me
-the movie that they zoomed in on at the end should have been their wedding that was playing on the screen

some of these might be harsh but this was my first impression of everything

so so tired of men who’s entire outlook on life is based on their ego and who just fall in love with whatever woman is currently complimenting them. i love ethan hawke but fuck the best scenes in this movie were when he wasn’t there, he did too good a job acting like a prick.

juliene moore was my favorite part of this movie, she was magical like usual.

okay this was not as bad as everyone made it out to be.

it starts out pretty slow-minus the mustache origin story-but once the mystery gets going it’s actually pretty interesting.

we have some really great performances by some of the cast-lettita wright, sophie okonedo, emma mackey were great and my favorite performances. and of course kenneth branagh did amazing. he was a lot funnier than i was expecting his character to be (i haven’t seen orient express yet).

i did think it was going to be the husband who did it kind of early on so i do wish that had been a little more of a mystery, but then they did have me second guessing myself a couple times throughout. so all in all i had fun with it

wow hugh jackman is so good he had me convinced he might be innocent too. i thought it was going to turn out to be his dad to be honest.

i really enjoyed this one. it was cute, had a lot of funny moments, and the plot was easy to get invested in. it keeps you guessing and has good surprise turns, even if it’s nothing flashy or crazy. it’s simple but i think it works. i enjoyed the chemistry between sondra and sid. they had a very wholesome father/daughter/friends vibe. and the chemistry between her and peter was definitely believable. as far as woody allen’s more recent films go this is one i enjoyed more.

look i know this is sex and the city 2, and there’s no real reason to write a long review for it but i just finished it and i have some thoughts.

some moments that genuinely made me laugh out loud with how ridiculous they were:

-everything with aiden oh my gosh
-also pretty much everything with big i really can’t stand him
-when the lady said ya allah in response to the hot flashes, and Samantha tried to copy her and responded with ahh la la
-c
arrie flashing her leg and getting a taxi
-the fact that smith came back and sam and him DIDNT GET BACK TOGETHER?? as if she didn’t tell him “you’ve been more to me than any man ever has” pssshhh please
how do the moms without the help do it?”
-and most of the other moments in between

honestly the conversation with miranda and charlotte at the bar talking about being moms was the only interesting thing that happened the whole movie, and they should have just given us a movie about that.

also so many of the “conflicts” were just lazy excuses for the other characters to have something going on so they weren’t standing around bored while the carrie/big/aiden show was happening. they were all real issues-charlotte worrying about harry and the nanny, miranda finally quitting her job and focusing more on being a mom, and sam dealing with menopause. but they all got turned into cheap comedic bits, or in miranda’s case not really felt with at all and then magically fixed at the end? also why did their housekeeper look so sad everytime she mentioned being home more? was she worried about being replaced? why was that never addressed? she also seemed very happy being at his science fair, she was tearing up saying i made it, i never make it. i thought maybe they were going to say how while she continues to work maybe she cuts back and tries to be home more but no she just got a new job. which is fine, i’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that. it just seemed like that’s what they were leading up to, especially with her son saying she has to go to work, i know. and then him looking so sad and miranda so guilty.

and then why did harry have to not cheat on the nanny because she was gay? she can still be gay but maybe harry and charlotte could have had a conversation before finding out she was gay about how he loves her no matter what and will always love her.

again it’s sex and the city, none of it’s supposed to be taken seriously, and i don’t. but man

this was such a joy to watch!

everything about it i loved. the story was so smartly handled with the pacing, the mixing of character interactions and storylines. it keeps you engaged and guessing the entire time.

not to mention the costumes, the camera work, it was all just so much fun. but it’s also the perfect combination of heavy and hilarious. it’s such a beautiful portrayal of love and heartbreak and what it can do to all of us, and how important it is to have people we trust around us. and it’s also filled with moments that teach you to laugh through the chaos.

was originally just going to use this as a way to log the fact that my mom, my sister and i finished the umbrella academy yesterday. but then i ended up watching this as well just to reminisce on watching bits of the show in high school. it’s a head canon of mine that nathan is really just klaus as a teenager somehow. maybe in another timeline.

i CANNOT believe how season 4 ended, i know we’re a little late to that party but oh my gosh. it was worse than we were expecting 😭 the regression of character development is astounding and needs to be studied honestly.

This review may contain spoilers.

wicked has been one of my favorite musicals for really long time. ever since i discovered defying gravity in high school. i’ve listened to the original soundtrack a lot, and was even lucky enough to see a performance of it in boston in 2022. so this musical has meant a lot to me for a while. but all that being said i tried not to take all that with me into the movie because it’s hard to enjoy something when you’re comparing it to all these other things.

i had a good time watching this. it was fun, i loved seeing the musical numbers performed again. dancing through life was my favorite number here. the choreography made it feel exciting, and i loved the details like spinning bookshelves and dancing on the books. that to me was just so cool.

some things didn’t hit as hard as i was hoping they would. for example in the play, the professor actually looses his ability to speak in front of his class and is forcibly taken away, and you can feel the dread and horror as he goes from talking to bleeting helplessly. and i wish they had done that in the movie because it is heartbreaking.

ariana grande was my favorite performance in this honestly, which kind of took me by surprise. she was an amazing galinda, and vocally sounded so true to the original broadway recording. it made it so much fun to watch. also she was so funny? like popular was my second favorite number all because of her. like-

they were…
popular?
RIgHt!!!

“well that’s not fair i told you a really good one.”
*flops down on the bed*

so fucking funny i loved it.

and the ending of popular, when everything goes pink and it feels soft and magical. visually that was probably my favorite part of the movie. i wish MORE of this movie had that same feeling. visually there was definitely a lot left to be desired.

i have to talk about defying gravity. that’s my favorite song in this musical, like many others’. and it was the one i was the most nervous for because it’s a hard one to do. and they aaalmost did it for me but it just did. not. hit. the way i was longing for. it’s weird i loved her seeing her younger self as she fell, and her getting used to flying so she lets herself fall backwards just to swoop back up. but the big finish just didn’t feel big enough. but that’s more of a personal preference.

fiyero and elphie will always have a special place in my heart. they beautifully show what it’s like to find someone in this world who sees you for who you really are, sees through the walls and exterior you’ve had to put up to protect yourself, and challenges you to actually be that person and not just continue hiding.

also small thing but i love how the title card gave off wizard of oz vibes.

as a whole this was really enjoyable, and i’m looking forward to part two🩷💚

pretty cute, wholesome christmas vibes, lots of good harmonies. i enjoyed the sitcom style shenanigans. but the theme of “don’t give up on your dreams” could have been played out a little better. she only had to wait what, a couple weeks for everything to work out? i know it’s a hallmark movie but it would have felt more impactful if she had to wait a little longer for her big break.

say she got to the city, found out her play was canceled, was honest with her dad from the start, and just put everything she had into trying to find a new show. we could see a year go by where she’s working towards her goals, and learning to be a better waitress. then next christmas she could do the duet performance and finally get casted in something. over that year she could have also been growing closer to her love interest, and ditch the cousin (props to that actor for being one of the most unaware, selfish, and annoying characters i’ve seen in one of these movies. i know alex did a good job at feeding brad info about her but how did she not notice what he was really like from the beginning?)

i think a slower burn with this plot could have worked a little better and made it feel more meaningful. but it was still an enjoyable watch, and i’d be willing to watch it again.

also this has nothing to do with the movie, but i saw jordan litz perform in wicked a couple summers ago in boston as fiyero. he was amazing, and getting to hear him sing again in this movie was really cool. we got to meet him at stage door actually and he was super sweet. my mom was fascinated by this fold up bike he had and he was just as eager to talk about it with her. it was really cute

this one is definitely going to be more journal entry than movie review whoops

using this as a way to log the show, i finally finished it after starting it years ago.

i started watching this show during quarantine with my boyfriend at the time. we fell in love with this show immediately, it's writing was brilliant, the animation is gorgeous, and the voice acting was so incredibly raw and powerful. it quickly became one of our favorite shows to watch together. we weren't able to always get together so we'd get on face time calls, say 1 2 3, and then hit play at the same time. before watch parties became a thing.

we made it to the end of season 3, and then things happened... and then we weren't together anymore.

and i figured that was as far into the show as i'd get. it became one of the things "off limits" because doing it without him was too painful with all the memories it brought back. it was one of the things i folded up into a box, and figured it could just stay there till i figured out what to do with it. or it could just live there.

and then one night, a year later, i was trying to find something to watch while i crochet, and it popped up because it's still on my netflix list. and i don't know what made me click on it but i did. maybe i was looking to feel sad. or to watch something with hard themes that would make me feel sad and give me justification for the sadness i was already feeling, if that makes sense. it's weird having depression, and being so used to thinking i have to hide my emotions, and since i’m sort of sad almost always, it makes me think i need to find something to make me even sadder so i have permission to feel sad.

so i went back to the last episode we watched together, and kept going. every night i would watch a few episodes. it felt cathartic in a way. like the show could be ours in the past, and be part of the history, but also mine now that i needed it again.

i wasn't ready for how much the show would crack me open, and then put parts of me back together. i know it's just an animated show about a cartoon horse, but it's the most beautiful, smartly written, hilarious, heartbreaking piece of writing i've ever seen. it's genuinely one of my favorite things in the world. and it resparked the flame inside me that wants to be a writer.

i think one thing i've learned from watching this show, is that we're all a little bojack. some of us more than others, and to more intense degrees maybe. but i think the reason so many people love this show is that it shows us the truth. we're all a little hurt, we're all a little fucked up sometimes, we all have our scorpions that keep us up at night, and we find things to try and quiet them down. we hurt the people we love most in this world, sometimes without even meaning to, but because we're scared and stupid and don't know what else to do.

and it also shows us that no matter how long it takes us to realize this, we can always chose to try and do better. we can't wipe the slate clean, only try harder going forward. and it doesn't happen overnight. but it's not impossible.

“but you gotta to do it everyday. that’s the hard part. but it does get easier.”

i saw some things in bojack that i see in people i know. i saw some things in bojack that i see in myself. and that both scared and comforted me. it comforted me because if he can make the choice to be better i think maybe i can too.

i'm not sure if my then boyfriend ever finished the show. i hope he did, i think he'd really like it. and i hope that he's doing good.

this is the last thing i'll tag "watched with eduardo" since it feels wrong to log it just as "watched alone".

this show is inspiring, especially if you find something in it that resonates with you. which i think there's something in here that everyone can relate to at some point. this show is a wonder honestly, and exactly what writing should be.

"So that's what I'm talking about, Its like the song says, 'You do the hokey-pokey and you turn yourself around.'

You turn yourself around, that's what it's all about.”

i am trying desperately to turn myself around everyday.

left this movie with more questions than anything. it needed much less of the “figuring out what the hell is going on” and way more of the “okay what the hell do we do now”

also the scene at the end, where she’s reminiscing about them laying in bed? instead of just, i don’t know? running for her fucking life felt like it was supposed to be way more dramatic and emotional than it was. but then again, that was most of this movie. it wanted to make you go “wow that was brilliant” and it tried, but every time i was just left thinking “okay so where’s the rest of the answers?”

This review may contain spoilers.

leopold is the new standard for men. hugh jackman had me blushing and fighting squeals the whole damn movie. also kate crying because he made her toast and she’s not used to guys being so caring towards her? so real

there were some disappointing parts though. i get the message of leaving your materialistic job behind to follow what makes you happy, and to follow true love. but she had more of an established life i feel like than he did. and he also was bored and unhappy with his life and didn’t feel like he really had a purpose. it felt like it made more sense for him to stay in the present day with her. what about her brother? we don’t see her friends but i assume she has some. or other family ?

it did also feel like her character was missing the charm we usually see from meg ryan, like in you’ve got mail and when harry met sally. she masters the perfect combination of firm and strong but also yearning for love and hopeful. in this movie she felt more bitter, and a little uptight, but it makes sense why after the dinner scene. maybe if that was established sooner it would be easier to get into her mindset and root for her even more.

these notes aside though it’s a very romantic film, it’s funny, and wholesome. and leopold’s character does a good job of inspiring everyone around him, as well as the audience, to imagine a better life and then act accordingly to try and achieve it.
