Came in expecting one thing, and got the complete opposite. While I usually find myself adoring Wes Anderson for his films that balance emotion and comedic moments incredibly well (The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic, etc.), or for his recent bigger picture films with deeply layered messaging (Asteroid City and The French Dispatch), this film found a relatively unique niche within his filmography. Channeling the comedic mastery of Rushmore and Bottle Rocket, but packaged in his newer style, Wes Anderson delivers in all honesty one of his most unique films despite what they will try to sell you. Genuinely hilarious moments that make this to be his greatest comedic endeavor yet. Michael Cera was born to be in a Wes Anderson movie, and he comes out as the MVP and the main reason you should go. The departure of Robert Yeoman as the cinematographer can be felt here, but it almost feels refreshing to see Wes shed his skin under Bruno Delbonnel, who isn’t afraid as much to switch things up. Doesn’t learn how to fly until about 30 minutes in, but from that point it takes off and becomes pretty good. This one had me worried it wouldn’t be that good, but Wes Anderson never seems to disappoint me.

As a relatively moderate fan of Black Mirror, I knew sooner or later I’d find myself in another part of the anthology world with Love, Death & Robots. Watching an animated Fincher project feels like a breath of fresh air, but also serves as a testament to how great of a director he is when something feels missing here with the absence of his impact on his actors mannerisms. Didn’t hook me immediately, but conceptually I found it quite interesting after it left the exposition and I wanted more.

Even though I didn’t find this bad, it was quite a disappointment in comparison to the first two parts. Doesn’t feel like it serves much of a purpose and doesn’t carry enough cohesiveness narratively or thematically to not be toothless. The animation is still very amazing to watch, but I’m glad that this doesn’t go any further beyond this part.

A film that gradually pulled me into it, until it eventually reaches one of the most applaudable endings ever. It takes on a whole new meaning the deeper you get into it, and I think that’s what makes it such a beautiful piece of art, as it has fluidity. I find it to be a beautiful story about not only the value of tangible items and the stories they carry, but also a remarkable piece on perspective.

“Love is too weak a word for what I feel.”

Never in my time as film lover has my opinion on one singular film changed so much, but alas my eyes have been opened up to the masterpiece that this film is. One of those films that works so well because it doesn’t always romanticize romance, instead opting for this incredibly nuanced approach of dissecting identity amidst a relationship, amassing itself by the end as one of the most comical, yet depressing lenses into love. Diane Keaton wholeheartedly gives one of my all-time favorite performances, and her chemistry with Allen and the juxtaposition of their characters takes this film to a transcendent plane of character work that so few films have come close to reaching. Not only is this film beautifully acted and written, but it’s incredibly innovate (especially for its genre) with some of the most interesting editing decisions of the prior century. I could honestly ramble on forever why this film is so special. This film opened my eyes to giving movies I may have not like the first time a second (or third) chance.

Whilst being somewhat poorly acted, this film finds its strength in presenting a conceptually interesting Black Mirror-esque tale. Important message, but carried in a weak enough vessel that I couldn’t fully come to love it. I think the first half of this is excellent, creating a harrowing atmosphere, until it eventually loses me in the second half. Quite the introduction to Lars Von Trier as a director. I was completely bought into this much more delicately cared American Psycho reminiscent film, until it started to pivot. One of the most interesting films I’ve ever seen about the psyche of a killer, but the final hour of this has some outsized ambition. Without the sufficient backing or depth to facilitate its incredibly unique shift towards the end, this started to slip away from me. Matt Dillon was great, and I was quite surprised by how well this film was upheld by the ing cast considering the type of film it is.

Just a complete mess. I’ll start out by saying that this film’s faults are not a result of the actors, because they are truly not given much. The Succession style didn’t adapt into a film, especially not one that has an identity crisis like this one. A fairly shallow eat the rich film that doesn’t make a single creative narrative decision until the final act. Is it crazy for me to say that this may just be one of my favorite entries in the franchise. A beautiful homage to the rest of the films and the grandeur of the stunt work, but it comes at a sacrifice of this film’s own narrative and individuality. Tom Cruise proves why he has forever been one of the best working, and I found a lot of the ing cast to be delightful here. Some sequences get dragged on a little too long, but for the most part, there’s a lot of great moments here. One of the things I’ve noticed time and time again with Paul Thomas Anderson is that his films from the looks and sounds of their concepts and angles seem unlikely to work out, and yet every time he delivers in the most compelling lens possible. A beautifully orchestrated piece that soothes my ears with arguably the best score ever. Daniel Day-Lewis never seems to disappoint and I cannot wait for his return to acting, although this film would’ve been quite the way to end one’s career. Kind of reminds me of The Substance in many ways for its relatively surface level exploration of its themes that is bolstered by its grotesque nature and jarring imagery in incredibly effective manners. Felt very unique in the filmography of Denis Villeneuve, and I’m glad I got to check out his ridiculous ridicule of gluttony and greed.

Simply a delight. A film that highlights the opportunity in tragedy, juxtaposing the beauty of discovering something new with images of disaster accompanied by two distinct inverse scores that shoot so much life into this one. There’s even more under the surface here with it’s examination of social classes, but for something that brought me this much delight as it was on the surface, I don’t have a desire to overcomplicate this one.

“If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to abuse one.”

I think I may have just discover what makes me adore a film like All The President’s Men so much; I have quite the knack for adoring journalism films. I don’t know how I let Spotlight zip right by me on my first watch. Now sure, Spotlight isn’t a revolutionary film, and I wouldn’t even say it’s a film that should’ve won best picture in almost any other year. What makes this film so remarkable is that it takes this devastating story and takes a quite powerful magnifying glass to it. The performances of Mark Ruffalo, Rachel Mcadams, and company are just some of the many reasons this film is able to carry its subject matter so well. Will definitely need to revisit this one once again because it’s just so interesting and never lets go of my attention for a second.

“As if every thought that tumbles through your head was so clever it would be a crime for it not to be shared. The Internet's not written in pencil, Mark, it's written in ink.”

Something about this one just tickles my fancy. So many sequences in here could be among my favorites of all time. Just an undeniable force of a script driving this film that makes it one of the most intriguing biopic films ever. A meticulously crafted portrayal of the persona of one of the most infamous morally ambiguous figures in our country. The Rezner/Ross score here is comfortably one of the greatest scores of all time and there’s no question about it. Jesse Eisenberg’s performance is unmatched, and Andrew Garfield is the heart of this film that makes it worth your while. Resolidified itself as my favorite Fincher film on this watch.

Simply masterful. It cannot be stated anymore at this point how well written this film is. An intellectually intense inspection of conformity and opinion. It’s like watching a tennis match watching it all bounce back and forth. I will come back to this film many times in my life because it simply has so much to offer.

Pablo Larrain simply cannot miss when it comes to making a biopic. The ways in which he brings his characters to life, far beyond just restating historical facts is remarkable. Accompanied by a masterclass performance from Natalie Portman and a solid ing cast, this film gives a slice of the horror that Jackie Kennedy faced following her husband’s assassination in an incredibly raw fashion. The cinematography and score were simply phenomenal.

Rocky IV had the potential at moments to be the best in the franchise, but it’s far too much of a mixed bag for my liking. It pours a lot into montages at the expense of actual storytelling, and has good dialogue at times but equally bad line delivery. Some cool editing decisions in the final fight, but there’s not much else here besides that.

A massive shame that Netflix decided to get rid of their interactive media, so I knew I had to experience this before it was gone forever. A story that is mostly okay, but becomes memorable due to its interactive gimmick. The interactive storytelling can get frustrating at points, but I’m glad Black Mirror attempted it because it fits their brand very well.

d as a rom com, but it will absolutely tear at your heart strings. A back and forth battle within a man grasping onto the final years of his father’s life, and trying to move on and find love in another way. I adored the editing and voiceover scenes. It sort of reminded me of About Time but without the fantasy elements. This film struggles at times to balance this father and son relationship with a romance story, but I think it’s still more than worth your time. I know I’d like this even more on a second watch.

I’m not quite sure what makes me love To Catch a Thief more than the average joe. Whatever it may be, I find myself totally and utterly enwrapped into of the most engaging cat and mouse chase films ever.

“Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room.”

Monumental mastery from Stanley Kubrick with this one. Elevates satirical narrative to something of my liking (very complimentary), and simultaneously makes one of the most politically relevant discussions of its time through a completely fictional story. As I had just mentioned, satires never have been amongst my favorite types of films… until now. Kubrick infuses life into every character, and when ed by the great performances of those like Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, and many more, you get some of the most legendary characters to ever grace the screen. The way this film was made for the early 60’s is more than enough to solidify Kubrick as a technical genius of a director even before 2001: A Space Odyssey. I adored getting lost in the frenzy of this film, and I’m sure it will be one of those films I’ll come back to many times in my life. The Cold War era has got to be one of the most interesting times in world history to me, so this film resonated with me even more on my rewatch with more knowledge of the history. Possibly the greatest film ending ever.

“It's like with all our dreams and our nightmares, we've got to keep feeding them for them to stay alive.”

Such a valuable rewatch for me. A Beautiful Mind was a film that I liked originally, but it had kinda completely slipped my brain. A film that can be both problematic and progressive simultaneously. I believe the depictions of mental health are what this film thrives on, but it does it in a male-gazed Oscar bait way that almost makes me hesitant in liking it. Regardless, I still find this to be quite a great film as it utilizes a unique editing style and interesting vfx. Jennifer Connelly is absolutely extraordinary in this film, outshining Russell Crowe who is already fantastic as he is, so I’m glad she won her Oscar for this one.

Was in a bad mood the first time I watched this, but under the right circumstances I could appreciate it much more. This is kind of THE romcom even though it’s nowhere near the best of the best, but it embodies the golden age of romcoms through its cliches and concept. “A shoe is just a shoe until somebody steps into it. Then it has meaning. The rest of us just want a chance to touch that greatness. We need you in these shoes not so you have meaning in your life, but so that we have meaning in ours. Everyone at this table will be forgotten as soon as our time here is up - except for you. You're gonna be ed forever, because some things are eternal.”

Air resides in the 2020’s good biopics that don’t do a whole lot but don’t need to hall of fame. I can think of a few films that also belong up there like BlackBerry or Saturday Night. You can hate on these types of films all you want, but at the end of the day it’s these films that are just so much fun and yet still have enthusiasm in its filmmaking and don’t feel robotic, possessing some fluidity. Revisiting Air, I forgot just how many incredibly solid performances there was here, and I’m afraid Matt Damon and Viola Davis never got the flowers they deserved for their performances. Matt Damon’s final monologue is so incredible.
