The Count of Monte Cristo

2024

★★★★½

This might just be the most slept on film of 2024 and I hope submits this for Best International Feature to the Oscars and not Emilia Perez (which I still have yet to see but I doubt it comes close to touching this film.)

A decades-spanning, sweeping narrative of vengeance and classism. A true epic production that from the very opening scene straps you into a a 3-hour ride that flies by. Gorgeously shot with an ambitious production, paired with an elegant production and costume design that leaves you fully immersed and eating up every inch of the frame.

The film rides mostly on the back of Pierre Niney's performance, but truly everyone involved in this cast feels perfectly placed. Jérôme Rebotier is one of the most intense and infectious productions of the entire year and one that a just world would not ignore come awards season.

Locked in from start to finish, losing myself in this period and this timeless classic tale. On rewatch this could bump up as this just ticks all the boxes for me, I highly recommend.
