Top 5 Dynamic Duos 3c5x4d https://letterboxd.voirfilms24.com/warnerbrosuk/story/top-5-dynamic-duos/ letterboxd-story-36663 Thu, 24 Apr 2025 02:03:18 +1200 <![CDATA[

The ant 2 hits cinemas on April 25, giving us more of the charged dynamic between Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal. We see it as a perfect excuse to revisit some of our top dynamic duos from the Warner Bros. catalogue.

Sam and Frodo: This is an unlikely pair to carry the burden of the One Ring. Two hobbits, from humble origins in The Shire, are not who you’d expect to decide the fate of Middle Earth. Originally ed by the wider fellowship, they eventually go their own way – facing orcs, giant spiders, Gollum, and whatever Mordor throws at them. Facing all of this together. Without Sam, Frodo wouldn’t have succeeded, and without Frodo, Sam would still be a simple gardener.

Max and Furiosa: Unlike Sam and Frodo, this pair is exactly who you’d expect to find in the wasteland. They’re rugged, usually found covered in dirt, and are at home behind the wheel of whatever gas guzzling vehicle they can find. Originally at odds, their encounter came when Max was chained up to be used as a living ‘bloodbag’ for the war party, led by Furiosa. But as events unfold, they increasingly find themselves aligned, relying on each other to fight off Immortan Joe and his goons. Until by the end of the film they see eye to eye, literally.

Godzilla and Kong: Similarly to Max and Furiosa, Godzilla and Kong start off as rivals. Godzilla, a colossal prehistoric reptile, awakened and empowered by nuclear testing. Kong, a titanic gorilla residing on the aptly named Skull Island. This is how we’re introduced to this iconic pair in the Monsterverse, but after a few films – and one aircraft carrier based battle – they seem to have come to an understanding. Godzilla is a lumbering force of nature, destroying everything and anything in his path, but Kong is more agile, jumping from building to building and even wielding an axe. It’s an unlikely pair, but it’s hard to deny it’s not cinematic dynamite.

Sherlock and Watson: Lets change gears from the world of gargantuan titans to Victorian London and examine Guy Ritchie’s take on this iconic detective duo. In this adaptation, Holmes is not just a brilliant detective, but a quirky, eccentric figure with a bit of a rough edge. Watson is his grounding force, the pragmatic foil to Holmes' eccentricity. Holmes’ brilliance and instinctual genius are complemented by Watson’s more practical approach to life. Their relationship is built on mutual respect, with a healthy dose of friction, humour, and emotional depth.

Christian and Braxton: Working on a slightly different side of the law to Sherlock and Watson, we have Braxton, a hardened hitman, and Christian, a brilliant ant with lethal skills - the estranged brothers. Their father's harsh training forged them into formidable individuals, but also drove a wedge between them. Initially at odds, their reunion in "The ant" is fraught with tension and unresolved emotions. Yet, as the story unfolds, their bond as brothers resurfaces, revealing a deep connection that transcends their differences (alongside a lot of brotherly bullying, of course).
Honourable mentions: No discussion of dynamic duos is complete without Batman & Robin. They’re iconic for a reason and whatever incarnation always works perfectly!

How many of these duos have you seen? Are there any we have missed? Dive into our catalogue to explore our rich suite of cinematic duos. And don’t miss the next chapter in Chris and Braxton’s story in The ant 2, in cinemas April 25.

Top 5 Movie Cars 333u2f https://letterboxd.voirfilms24.com/warnerbrosuk/story/top-5-movie-cars-1/ letterboxd-story-35948 Tue, 8 Apr 2025 23:34:17 +1200 <![CDATA[

From growling gas guzzlers, to high powered cruisers, these films offer some of cinema’s best on screen cars.

Whether it’s patrolling the wasteland or speeding through the streets of Gotham, a great cinematic vehicle should not only distil their owner’s identity into 4 wheels, but shape the aesthetic of the world they inhabit.

Here are our top 5 movie cars:

The Shaguar: What better vehicle for flamboyant secret agent Austin Powers than a 1961 Jaguar E Type with a union jack paint job? It’s an extension of his velvet suits and ruffled shirts, communicating to us that this character is, above all else, groovy. But it also speaks to the world he inhabits, the free spirited, stylish and hedonistic ethos of the swinging sixties - complete with a license plate that reads ‘SWINGER.’

The Mystery Machine: There’s been multiple incarnations of this iconic crime fighting van, but there are a number of constants. The colour scheme; although the arrangement has varied, the green, blue, and orange tones have become a staple for the Scooby Gang. The live action films opt for more of a surfer dude aesthetic, with the orange pattern at the bottom resembling waves, while most animated versions channel a groovier look, with orange being used for flowers at the front and sides. The vehicle; while other iconic cars have differed across multiple depictions, the mystery machine has always been a boxy van, plain and simple. The vibes; despite these small differences, the vibe remains retro, friendly, and most of all fun. Perfect for spooky hijinks.

The Pursuit Special: Mad Max has driven a lot of cars over his years in the wasteland. There’s the yellow Interceptor from his 1979 debut, the war rig from Fury Road, and we can’t forget the cow print cruiser from Beyond Thunderdome. But Max is best known for driving the iconic V8 Interceptor, by the name of The Pursuit Special. This black muscle car reflects Max’s grit and determination, as this sturdy old banger will keep going forward no matter what the wasteland throws at it. Although largely absent from Fury Road, it makes a brief cameo at the beginning of the film before being stolen by Immortan Joe’s pesky war boys.

Griswold Family Station Wagon: Some cars need to be rugged to survive the apocalypse, some need to be groovy to fit into the zany world of the swinging sixties, but some face much more mundane challenges. What better car to survive a family road trip than the station wagon from National Lampoon’s Vacation. This modified 1979 Ford Country Squire has ample room for the kids in the backseats, as well as a sturdy roof rack for all of your luggage needs, perfect for a Griswold family vacation!

The Batmobile: Whether it’s Micheal Keaton’s sleek cruiser or Christian Bale’s tank like tumbler, there’s no shortage of on screen batmobiles. In of live action films, the caped crusader has found himself behind the wheel of the six unique vehicles, each bringing justice to Gotham in their own special way. Fitting with the more fantastical setting, the earlier batmobiles of the Micheal Keaton, George Clooney, and Val Kilmer films have a design based on a 1967 Chevrolet Impala, capturing the perfect balance between comic book fantasy and grounded realism. For when Christian Bale stepped into the role we saw perhaps the most realistic take yet. Presented with this armoured behemoth, Bruce Wayne had only one request - “does it come in black?”. Ben Affleck’s batmobile was perhaps the most destructive we’ve seen, cramming machine guns, missile launchers, harpoons, and night vision into its armoured frame. Finally we have Robert Pattinson, bringing with him a set of fresh new wheels. This batmobile is a departure from any that came before, featuring the frame of a heavy muscle car, opting for a blunt force approach rather than the surgical precision of high tech gadgets.

Honourable mentions: The sleek Ford Mustang from Bullitt, which can typically be found zooming through the streets of San Francisco. The Shaggin’ Wagon from Dumb and Dumber, a A goofy, dog-shaped van, complete with floppy ears and a sticking out tongue. Barbie’s convertible, a vibrant pink dream car she took from Barbie Land to the real world, little did she know Ken was hiding in the back.

How many of these iconic cars have you seen? Dive into our catalogue to explore the cornucopia of vehicular fun we have to offer!

A world famous surrealist artist walks into a bar...

About 50 minutes into Midnight in Paris, Owen Wilson’s character Gil Pender is talking with his one sided love interest, Adriana (Marion Cotillard). After she declines his offer to walk her home, Wilson gives a dejected sigh, looking down in disappointment. From left of frame hovers in a wooden cane, with an ornate ivory head. The camera pans over, presenting us with Adrien Brody in a stylish black suit, a thin pencil moustache, and a theatrical accent.

He gets up and introduces himself to Gil, patting his chest while exclaiming ‘Dalí! Dalí!’ Afterall, in a cafe described in the script as ‘bohemian’, who else would you expect to find other than iconic surrealist artist Salvador Dalí?

Midnight in Paris sees Owen Wilson’s nostalgic screenwriter on holiday in Paris with his shallow and image obsessed fiancé (Rachel McAdams), but whenever the clock strikes midnight he finds himself mysteriously transported back to the 1920s - an era he has long romanticised as a golden age. Throughout his time travelling escapades he encounters various literary and artistic figures from the time, in a who's who of cultural icons. Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Pablo Picasso, and of course, Salvador Dalí.

Back to the bohemian café, shortly after introducing himself to Gil, Dalí - without any context or preamble - asks a simple question. ‘You like the shape of the rhinoceros?’ What follows is a tirade about how he paints rhinoceroses, how he wants to paint Gil, and how he sees Gil’s sadness. With his eyes locked on his scene partner, Adrien Brody’s stare conveys a frantic intensity. With perfectly timed blinks and eyebrow rises, he transforms this abstract and ambiguous rant into a powerful dressing down of Owen Wilson’s character, seeing through the facade and encouraging him to open up about his situation.

And Gil’s situation is a troubling one. When asked if he loves his fiancé he responds with ‘I think I love her, I better love her, I’m marrying her!’ Not exactly a good sign. During his time in the ‘20s he meets Adriana, lover and muse of Pablo Picasso, and quickly falls for her. Gil describes his situation - engaged to a woman he doesn’t love and in love with a woman from ‘90s years ago, who is the partner to one of the greatest artistic minds of his time - as ‘very perplexing’. Very perplexing indeed.

Dalí then invites his friends (Avant-Garde filmmaker Buñuel and surrealist photographer Man Ray) to them. Being surrealists they ‘see nothing strange’ in Gil’s situation. Man Ray says he sees a photograph, Buñuel sees a film, Gil sees an insurmountable problem. But Dali? Dali sees… a rhinoceros!

Despite being only three and a half minutes long, and his only appearance, Adrian Brody leaves an outsized impression on a film with an impressive ensemble cast - both of actors and cultural figures! He brings a kind of crazed energy to the role, his eyes dancing from left to right as if he sees the world differently to everyone else. His outright refusal to speak literally, instead filtering Gil’s situation through the layer of a surrealist rhinoceros metaphor. We feel a bizarre gravitas to each word he speaks - not only because they are coming from an artistic titan - but because of all the tiny nuances to Brody’s performance. Like how he drags his finger down his face when mentioning tears, or how he nonchalantly tosses his cane to the side when first bringing up the rhinoceros. For three and a half minutes he completely hijacks the movie, bringing it into a weird, surrealist, realm, transforming a simple dialogue scene into one of the most memorable parts of the film.

So go back to Paris in the 1920s, explore this golden age of arts and literature, hang out with Salvador Dalí and his surrealist pals. Watch Midnight in Paris here
