“Could you imagine falling in love with a man like me, by the way, hypothetically?”

we are born under a system of greed but we can fight against that to build community, rehabilitation is death of one’s own self, we must die before we truly live. 

A film about contrast, the contrast between the family business and the family, right and wrong, heaven and hell, and real or fabricated. 

The film plays with the conversation of balance and community which is nothing new for a Wes Anderson film but the connecting theme is what truly makes this stand out, social conditioning and the journey to acknowledge and overcome it. Wether that be from a man who seeks wealth due to his upbringing making him feel without purpose, a woman abounded by all but the church seeks to become a nun as religion was her only comfort, or a teacher who must pretend to be someone from he’s not just to achieve his ion since he’s been forced out of it by those in power. These things are not without consequence and commonly cause contention among eachother as what’s the point of a family business if you push the family away to pressure it, what’s the point dedicating yourself to change if you do nothing with it, and is it really your dream if you’re not yourself while you do it?

All ideas that could be hard to tackle especially all at once but the unique way Wes tells his stories work perfectly for this and carries such sympathy throughout its runtime. It acknowledges why they become what they are and that it’s not inherently bad, but working to build understanding among eachother. We can sympathize with the idea of fighting for more, we can understand how one may find comfort in religion and we can understand why someone may hide or change characteristics to fit a mold. But any of those in the extreme are problematic and we must work to balance ourselves out, we must find the proper contrast.

The way this movie plays with Korda’s depiction of an afterlife was incredibly interesting and something I hope to process more on a future watch, along with just allowing myself to feel the movie now that I understand the basics of his framework and intentions. Might be the thing holding this back from being rated even higher, unless it’s just ultimately to bloated for its own good as some Wes film tend to be.

Might just be the closest we’ve got to try and recreate any of the 80’s camp slashers i’ve seen in awhile.

Feels like a homage to classic slashers by blending multiple different slashers villains together all controlled by the cursed which of the land they stand on, lightly playing with themes of systemic violence within impoverished communities as we travel through history to uncover those patterns and systems only to hopefully find their way through it all. An experience that can feel like a fight for survival, or in this case a literal fight for survival.

Awkward at times but it’s campy nature helps soften that along with it following cringy highschoolers so it just makes sense for them to cringe and uncomfortable at times, that ‘cringey fun slasher is accompanied by some good retro lighting with a great soundtrack even if its musical transitions can be fast and quite jarring at first. Overall fun watch and any slasher is better if it’s gay so I must give this bonus points.

“I'm on the edge of life, and the view is gorgeous.”

I can’t tell if watching this alone makes it infinitely worse or was the best decision for the film.

A very unique blend of genres that works quite well, really only comparable to something like Trap. Very funny yet heartbreaking film that explores issues within those who lack community, A man who becomes obsessed with to the hopes to piggyback his way into community with the added layer of jealousy. The way one man throws away everything he has for it while he struggles to appreciate what he has, family. I think it prioritizes its awkwardness and comedy but I only wish it would tighten up its themes and more poetically tie it all together as it provides the pieces to do so but ultimately doesn’t work to conclude them, which is possibly intentional for some of it’s messaging but didn’t fully work for me. It’s the double edged sword with many films existing fully within someone’s mind/perspective, you get to explore the whole world through his warped mind but it leaves more to be desired that we couldn’t experience because of it.

It’s rare to find a film that feels so uniquely built around my interests and feelings but it’s a feeling like no other when something feels so specifically made for you.

Oh Teressa you deserved better 

Still painfully predictable and simple albeit kinda cute it does have two things i thought were super cute and only wish they expanded on them.

Repaying his prom debts: Still within the stereotypical range of the genre but was honestly super cute to turn the restaurant into some mini-prom and would’ve worked great to help make the romance feel a lot less forced, but it was only used a kind of ‘happiness montage’ which is disappointing to not get sit within moments like those.

Teressa: During the makeover scene which is already during the ‘happiness montage’ sequence we get a cute moment of the nonnas talking about their past love and Teressa talks lightly on some of kind queer romance or affection towards another nun. An honestly unique and sweet moment but unfortunately we don’t get any up sequences with it. Unlike most other characters in we get to some kind of conclusion on their past or current love, we get some kind of conclusion hinted from the shot of her deciding to enter the church again but we never get to know or see anything from it.. Leaving the most interesting character the least fleshed out..

I’m surprised it’s taken me this long to watch this, a film that I thought that would just be a fun dark satire to laugh my way through, this film plays with expectation in such a unique way that really fooled me. It knows how to play with comedy and it’s expected themes, going from a mean girls style popular kid school girl satire, to a revenge quest, to a problematic romance, to a ghost tale, to a dark and pessimistic conversation about socialist structures and the issues under the hierarchical system. Due to how it plays with that expectation it works to build the pieces of your understanding of the end without making it obvious where it’s going, so when it finally reveals itself you’re given all the pieces to understand and appreciate its beauty.

“I ask you to kill Superman, and you're telling me you couldn't even do that one, simple thing.”

Is this a Superman movie or a Gus movie? So many interesting Ideas and themes here that’s ultimately Ruined by Richard Pryor’s Gus to hog all the screen time, that’s not to say all his sequences are bad per say but the pacing and dedicated screen presence is just way too much. This films arguably takes the biggest chance with its decisions, bringing in Lana Lang as the new love interest, bringing in Ross Webster to replace Lex Luther as the billionaire bad guy along with Vera and Lorelei both being interesting Henchmen type characters to him. (especially Lorelei) and Evil Superman is such an interesting concept feeling quite similar to Venom in Spiderman 3 (But personally more interesting) 

Apart from the strange choice of ending with Webster and Gus’ Ai self defense computer, on paper I actually like all 3 of these advancements better then the others because these changes allow the franchise to not just feel like we are resetting everything like it’s us rewinding time by spinning counterclockwise around the earth after each film. This advancement felt new and we actually have to see superman deal with consequences and work to fix wrongdoings after the fact which isn’t typically something expressed with superhero movies as a whole. If only they allowed time for those ideas to be fleshed out to make possibility the best superman film instead of using its runtime on a random sequences of a comedian who’s popular at the time for mostly no reason at all.

Those changes in the villain, love interest, and protagonist exploration that’s not all only positive from superman was the highlight of the film for me, it’s a shame that (to my knowledge) it’s exclusively in this film as they ultimately go back to Lex Luther and Lois Lane completely ignoring the growth this film tried to accomplish. Also frustrating that due to its wasted runtime we also don’t get a proper explanation of Lorelei, we understand she’s faking her ‘ditsy’ appearance and behavior but we never uncover her characters intentions which is devastating to me. I wanted to love this film so bad but I’m just left heartbroken.

A Shark? A Crab? Or a Siren?

Truly a masterclass in the godawful film world, you’d expect a film with themes and ideas like this that it would be a beautifully awful fun watch, a masterclass in ‘so bad it’s good.’ I ire the films ability to perfectly dodge and turn away from every moment allowing it to be any of those, instead we have a mind numbing, inconsistent, boring fever dream. I’m truly amazed in its ability to fail even being ironically enjoyable.

It takes the strange choice of it taking place at some kind marriage boot camp which just feels like some of kind reuse of some shitty reality show set, followed with cinematography that also feels straight from a reality television show or the start of a porno.. None of the characters are likable or interesting, the only time they started to develop the only couple I I could like they immediately kill them off through a fishing hole with the version of the shark laughably smaller than their appearance for the rest of the film just to fit through this hole for an unsatisfying death.

The inconsistency of the shark is frustrating as they aren’t even explored, very little actual lore provided for the abomination and what little we do get is glossed over. Nor do we really get the fun of the characters acknowledging the chaos of the situation, most of my criticisms of the shark’s inconsistency could be dismissed if the film or characters recognized it. The inconsistent nature and understanding of the film gave me a headache because what do you mean it can change size? what do you mean it works as a siren to lure a grieving women to her death? what do you mean it can crawl on land like a godamn crab?

One final frustration, the side plot doesn’t even happen? The huge approaching tropical storm that was supposed to swamp the entire island, necessitating the survivors seeking shelter first in a floating laboratory and then in a light house, never materializes and is not referred to again once the floating laboratory is abandoned. Instead, at the end of the film, the sun is shining brightly.

“You're the only part of me I don't hate.”

No matter how times I watch this it doesn’t get any easier.. This and Hereditary are in a very special category of their own as film that are perfect but way to stressful to enjoy enough for the full 5/5

[Birthday Watch #3]

“Time wasn't right. It was moving too fast. And then I was 19. And then I was 20. I felt like one of those dolls asleep in the supermarket. Stuffed. And then I was 21. Like chapters skipped over on a DVD. I told myself, "This isn't normal. This isn't normal. This isn't how life is supposed to feel."

It’s officially the end of my birthday, it was comforting to take a day and just watch so many movies guilt free. Today was healing to the soul and feels like a full reset within myself, I just hope to properly take advantage of this reset to pull myself out of this limbo. 

The TV’s been glowing for a little while now and i’ve been stuck as Owen and unable to become one with my Isabel, I know i’m still young but time sure does feel slow when you have to just sit by and hear your Isabel suffocate. I know There Is Still Time but sometimes I just feel stuck working in the arcade.

“Finding the perfect Christmas Tree isn’t easy… In fact I would say it is hard”

Only missing the wonderful soundtrack the later series has blessed me with but still definitely a masterpiece of an episode.

It’s definitely the incorrect time to return to this but I felt it necessary to help release some of my built up emotions, and watching Joe Pera receive the perfect christmas tree as a present from his choir kids was the perfect thing today get me crying like a baby. Watching his ion as he joyfully rambles on about it all wether they want to hear it or not is so cute, accompanied by some daydreams of a more stereotypical life during the holidays seen through rose tinted glasses is genuinely one of the most earnest things i’ve seen from him. It’s a subtle look into his optimistic yet still existing loneliness that he never really cares to express because Joe’s always been the guy to appreciate the little he has.

The exploration of Mary was actually beautiful as the idea of a “perfect family” from his daydream is visualized from a person even if it isn’t explored further in future installments (unless she’s the women in voicemail from Helps You Sleep) and that just brings a tear to my eyes even if the dream itself was quite silly.

Yes i’m watching this once again on a random afternoon, but it’s not so much that I put it on to sleep but to sit with his soothing words and life changing soundtrack to help rest my soul. I now feel calm and ready to take the day on, thank you Joe Pera.

I still prefer the live action approach of the TV series but I have so much respect for someone like Joe Pera for trying something so different that must have taken a lot of courage to stray out of his comfort zone like this especially so early into his journey with us.

There’s something so beautiful about seeing where one of your favorite shows all started

[Birthday Watch #2]

Im just a Laura looking for my trauma to manifest a romantic relationship with a monster made from my own schizophrenia to help me murder my ex to learn self love, is that too much to ask for?

[Birthday Watch #1]

“No, what I want is deeper. I want your eye, man. I want those things you see through.”

The isolated single set location horror films isnt anything new and this doesn’t work to change the genre but to perfect it, the genre is a classic and there’s not much to criticize it for on its own. Paying a huge respect to horror as a whole while exploring themes of racism within aesthetic liberalism while simultaneously showing the independence and assistance of the black community represented through the character of Rod.

An initial complaint holding this back was Rod, the way he’s detached from the actual single set horror and how he manages to find Chris without much explanation, I think I missed the point. Rod is the best example of the strong connection and community that they share, the mysterious nature of his assistance only helps to show that more as his actions don’t have to be validated throughout its runtime. The other initiative criticism was the lack of ‘terror’ with its conversation of white destruction, and modern colonialism.

The exploitation of ignorance under the false pretense of progress, or the weaponization of said false progress is agenerally unsettling to see it played out before our eyes and I think I may have not fully processed that from my first watch. You can try and apply the concepts of this film to ideas of queerness or other marginalized communities that may apply to you or I but I can never fully share the films trauma as it’s something so separated from me. But growing up myself in the world surrounded by those people within the false ideas of progress it took me longer to appreciate the cinematic terror of those using it for their modern ideas of cultural erasure and having those unseen monsters visualized. Their goal isn’t as much to enslave them in the traditional sense but to whitewash them and place them into a exploited labor force, not to force them into submission but to trick them into accepting it, removing that essence of themselves and becoming a cog in the machine, becoming one with their ancestors while using connection to your own. If you take what little steps towards progress we have as the conclusion you’ll only become apart of the unfair system, we must kill them with their own ways to raise them.

‘White culture’ is only built on stealing and exploiting others and their culture. We must work to build communities not based on such simple concepts and actively work to remove those ideas of ‘whiteness’

Overall a completely phenomenal movie that always made me hesitant to raise higher as while i’m watching I don’t feel much of it’s horror, but it’s definitely the kind of thriller that brings it’s heartache not during its runtime but hits you after. I only wish I could connect to these characters a little more.

[Pre-Birthday rewatch]

“We've just begun to learn about the water and its secrets, just as we've only touched on outer space. We don't entirely rule out the possibility that there might be some form of life on another planet, and why not some entirely different form of life in a world we already know is inhabited by millions of living creatures?”

A film that probably wouldn’t typically get the full 10/10 from me but the influence this has had for me is unmatched, one of those films that make you appreciate film and fills you with ideas for what to create for yourself wether a direct re-imagining of this story Similar Shape of Water (which ittedly I haven’t seen yet) or just how you can borrow its understanding of exploration, obsession, colonization of foreign land, and especially love.

Love between Mark and David is a fun ship but most importantly Creature and Kay, the exploration of sexuality and the concept of forbidden love being compared to assumed violence is depressing yet terrifying. My initial watch I thought this was more of a conversation queer love but I think the understanding of race/ethnicity is an important aspect to add the understanding, Unsure if it’s an intentional conversation of interracial relationships, queer relationships or just any kind of atypical romance but this works as a way to show one’s obsession and search for love and the ways it’s demonized if not in a more ‘traditional’ context.
Creature is first seen as the monster but by the end it’s man.

“I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to.“

It’s rare to see a film handle mental illness with such accuracy yet be so sensitive to its themes, all while still being very interesting and visually abstract.

The way it plans with its time and memory all while it works on his acceptance of crippling decay, the way it equally tackles its fear and hopelessness, giving into its voice and giving up on yourself. It also shows us a timeline of hopeful struggle, the search for understanding of answers, meaning and love. Frank is an idea yet a real person, the solution yet the cause of his harm, that balance in struggle is what will free us. Is Frank or Donnie the real one? Is Frank envisioning himself as someone different to play out the different possible outcomes to his struggles? does it matter?

The way the film plays with time, timelines and having the world built through a unreliable narrator with schizophrenia which can bring many questions and uncertainty about what really happened as I did above and initially after concluding the film. My conclusion is why can’t both be true? It’s equally real that he was saved that night and worked to build understanding and acceptance of himself and his mental state even if the consequences of his actions on that journey brought his own downfall, Frank may have killed Gretchen but Donnie killing Frank killed himself. Even if it’s all terminal delirium it wouldn’t have necessarily altered the outcome apparent by Donnie’s previous actions before that night of the airplane’s crash, or that after the tragedy of the events left him feeling like he essentially died in the crash, died in an accident having his love become nonexistent. 

A film that definitely deserves its cult status and one I must return to, my comprehension of Frank I’m still not completely satisfied with but I don’t have to understand everything to understand how good it is.

My initial criticisms while i’m more lenient I still partially agree with, the whole celebration and appreciation of cinema and theater that has come out of this is phenomenal and i’m just glad to be apart of it.

An Original story using mythological and folkloric depictions of vampires, owning the rights along with final cut and first-dollar gross shares, built for the theater and playing with unique aspect ratio combinations. With having some of the best theater experience both times this film isn’t just great film, wether you love every moment or not it’s the kind of the film that reminds how phenomenal film is and builds optimism for the industry I hope to one day become apart of. 

I’ve always been in love the Universal Monsters and it’s been looking like we may be having a proper comeback of them and their ideas within horror  that critics and general audiences alike can love, with the assistance of Nosferatu (2024) but this may be the one to properly bring that into affect. Maybe one day I’ll be great my own Universal Monsters film myself, I hope this is start to help horror get the attention and love it deserves and that the love for this film isn’t just a phase.

I’ve been ittedly hesitant to give this movie the rating I am now but I must also respect the horror that shapes us now as I want others to do, the way it has me wanting to see it again and again in theaters is another telling factor to show it deserves it. A beautiful thing in film history I’m happy to have gotten to be apart of. Let’s just see If I keep it this high rated.

Might just be the best superman film i’ve seen, only wish I loved it more..

I’m not one to post about every episode but S2E4 Might just be the best since S1E3, possibly better. A universal win for all lesbians.

I like attractive people and horror so you all knew I was gonna want to watch this..

I’ll be fully transparent I’ve never played the game nor do I honestly know anything about it, but I’d be lying if I didn’t have a lot of fun watching this sometimes painfully traditional horror with an interesting concept with its time looping. Reminds of playing a horror game like Dead by Daylight (a game i’ve actually played) as each looped night is different yet has the same task (like how each round of a game with or without different killers feels unique)

The biggest fall of the film is how it ultimately fully commits to its more traditional framework making this unique concept feel a lot less special. The concept of time looping becomes interesting with the added fear of human decay and the possibility of becoming trapped as a creature within the world is fascinating but painfully under explored. We see it somewhat from the after effects of Melanie but having such conflict avoidance we don’t actually get to see within the main cast, they tease us with the possibility through Abe and Megan but ultimately.. no. 

While it’s still playing under the guise of a more traditional horror which isn’t a surprise as it’s same director who did Annabelle it still manages to carry this fun slasher feel that I was able to enjoy, it’s harder to place my feelings on a rating so don’t be surprised if it fluctuates. Would recommend for a fun simple night watch.

Well I watched Superman 2’s proper film… I can now properly say I hate this

Part of wants to say “Iris is literally me omg” wether that’s a good or bad thing is up to debate, but if there’s one thing we can learn from Iris is.. We all need to become more Misandrist.

“He'll be a god to them.”

I thought i’d have issues with it’s Mel Gibson kind of christ characterization for no reason but I actually didn’t mind it, as the most interesting part of the film was how it works to build a more grandiose narrative and world building. Unfortunately the movie had weak dialogue and even weaker pacing making this ultimately uninteresting, I never cared to sit through the whole Snyderverse/DCEU but I’ve never really been to personally interested in most of the ones I’ve seen.

An absolutely phenomenal high watch, truly a film like no other.. wether that’s for better or worse i’ll leave that up to you but I respect it’s unique nature and how it never cares to give a single fuck throughout its runtime.

Exploring the idea of how to take to down problematic governmental system after reaching political peace in your own land is actually quite interesting and a unique use of the Sci-Fi genre even if it’s not taking itself seriously, I may be generous in my interpretation but this actually manages to have subtle feminist tones in how it explores sexual liberation aswell.

I think having the more pessimistic view of this film is understandable, seeing it more problematic due to view of Barbarella being visually objectified through the viewer’s perspective along with its theme of hyper sexuality feeling transactional as being given for favors from male characters throughout the film, I’d be lying if I didn’t have those worries throughout my watch but ultimately disagree with them.

Barbarella is always in some kind of highly sexual male-gaze kind of outfits but it works to create contrast to The Great Tryants style that feels the opposite while still sexual, and her fits also cunty as hell regardless. Her clothing choices is never a point of contention and I think that’s a very intentional choice from the sequence of first meeting with the President of Earth and his lack of care of her clothing or lack there of. While people are painfully obsessed with Barbarella it’s based on her own beauty and innocents not her clothing or ability to fit into expected feminine submissions under toxic masculinity. Allowing me to respect her visual style without worrying of the context of its sexualization around her. 

I see her relationship with sexuality less transactional and more an emphasis on her being able to give her reasons for her own sexual exploration in a peace ridden world that has removed that pleasure of romantic intimacy. After her encounter with Mark Hand she learns to explore it further with those around she comes across them whether it’s romantic or not, naturally or new earths methods of connection. By the end completely breaking tradition relationships and the lack of judgement from the film as she’s still able to finish the film with Pygar by the end regardless of her history. Ending in a beautiful exploration of bringing peace and having love, concluding with a possible throuple? Love it.

Ultimately a fun camp satire exploring slight feminist ideas while balancing satirical ideas within patriarchy but also sometimes unfortunately using them, a one of kind film that I actually enjoyed but most likely don’t want to see repeated.

[Restored Version]

To me there’s two ways to take this story based on who you trust and either way it’s phenomenal.

Francis: Through Francis’ perspective this is a tale of corruption and the consequences of fighting those in power alone. Dr Caligari is this sick man who rises to power and wishes to abuse it when given the opportunity, which comes when Cesare who’s a man forever asleep but can sleepwalk and will follow through on any command given to him. Caligari uses this to fulfill his believed prophecies through Cesare and when they happen due to him listening to every command from Caligari he believes them to be true, allowing this circling reasoning to drive him mad with power. Francis already loosing his best friend swears to find out who he is and to save his new found love, when Caligari is discovered Francis believes that will allow Caligari to sent to the same Insane Asylum he looks over. Not understanding that the other doctors won’t believe him and just think Francis is the one truly insane.

This understanding has a powerful theme of the issues with power, the way it can be abused and apply this false sense of trust.

Dr. Caligari: This understanding takes from the twist from the ending, the understanding that this tale is made up from Francis who has been in the Asylum the whole time. Blending elements from what’s around and his actual trauma, this dream-like world built from one’s trauma in and out of the asylum. The way one’s mind can blend and erase traumatic experiences as a coping mechanism, blending the lines between real events and the experiences around him in the Asylum. Using the man who controls his life now as the symbol of his trauma, Dr. Caligari. The grief of loosing someone close to you ing and losing yourself along with him, the importance of a person like Jane being uplifted in his mind possibly from either a romance within the walls of his captivity or from the idea of her importance from her delusions of royalty. 

Overall some truths overall, wether Dr. Caligari is truly the monster behind his trauma or the one who’s responsible for his actions and lack of freedom there’s this underlying truth of Caligari abusing his power within the walls or at least refusing to assist Francis in his hardships. The abuse from Cesare is prominently showcased through his deathly fear of Cesare and trying to reach for anyone willing to help. The importance of Jane still remains but seems to be in no real danger, the importance coming from his infatuation of her even if she seems to care little about his existence.

For a German Expressionist film from over 100 years this is absolutely stunning visually and knows how to play with its pacing and play with such complex characters and themes. The restored version also plays with Chiaroscuro Lighting over its film that fits with its intention incredibly well, its use of negative space gives this almost fake fisheye look, a cool technique that feels so unique and i’m surprised more film haven’t copied that. Wouldn’t be surprised if this inspired many films you and I love today and I wouldn’t be surprised if this influences me either. 

I’d recommend to watch the restored version as I feel that’s how you get the full experience but if you’re unable it’s available to watch free here

That was ah… definitely something, Wished I watched the theatrical release first, so I know how to properly compare, rate, and critique this film.

Unique use of camera for the camera followed by phenomenal audio design but the whole thing just felt so pointless. 

Already not a fan of more traditional war movies I was skeptical but I went into this hopeful as I actually quite liked Civil War, but this did nothing as I watched American soldiers occupied land they never should have been in and then then try and escape it right after. The film following the whole 90 minute sequence without any changes in time is interesting but not interesting enough, with the marketing of the film talking about how it’s entirely based on memories of the real people in question I thought we were in for some interesting visual and story blurring based on how different people would process the horror that is around them. Instead we get a painfully grounded story feels like a commodification of trauma.

I think an apolitical war movie doesn’t work in the perspective of the soldiers in war, it’s not about how war can ruin your spiritual connection to your land, or how traumatic it is to exist around such atrocities when you’re one assisting in the atrocities in question. While it doesn’t work to build propaganda for the u.s. military or the military industrial complex it doesn’t do anything to fight against it. We do some have interesting sequencing with the family of those who’s house they take over they don’t get nearly enough screen time or emphasis to truly help the film with its theme.

If you’re a fan of war movies this may be a good watch for you as I will it it’s better than many, but still left plenty to be desired.

Conformity. You can confirm within the system, becoming one with all, whether racist or one dealing with the problematic affects of systemic oppression. Conform for the sake of simplicity, is living forever worth your soul? Is it worth not to fight the oppression and simply let evil live amount you?  is living worth it if you loose yourself, just becoming one of the system and loosing any sense of individuality, is it worth fighting against progress in the false sense of preservation? By turning away from the light you’re loosing the ability to see it.

Or do you fight that? Bring that progress yourself, wether through literally taking down those oppresses or by bringing community, connection, regardless of time, ethnicity, religion, gender, we are suffer over oppression but through art and justice we can bring vengeance. The choice is yours.

This film brings a new perspective to the idea of vampires, not one of temptation, disease or sexuality but rather one of conformity. Conformity to a problematic system because of the fear of consequence that comes from change. Some may believe that even as a the oppressed you can benefit in the short-term by taking it, as anyone fighting the system is threatening to those who benefit from it but the illusion of safety in compliance is tempting if you let it in, it’ll only cost you your soul. 

Not much praise I can add that hasn’t already been given but I can say it’s well deserved as this is a phenomenal from start to end while also applying plenty to chew on with its themes. I’m the wrong person to talk to about its theme of racial injustice and history within those cultures so i'll leave up to those in those communities.

The only thing holding this back from being a perfect score is the jump to 1992, I thought the ending of Smoke getting his revenge and Sammie driving away with his broken guitar was perfect. Such a powerful feeling that left me teary eyed, then its jump to the future just felt unnecessary and drawn out. I see its intention as it works to finish the timeline from that one moment of how music and art is timeless, the film confronts the past and then in the end confronts the future. But I personally found it more interesting to leave future unknown, its visions with his music of community in the future was enough for me. Leaving it at his escape from the church with his music even if broken left a more powerful bittersweet but hopeful ending. Could definitely change on a rewatch as it was very unexpected which could play a part of it. A film I’ll definitely need, and want to return to.

Thank you Wes Craven for inventing Meta Slashers! A great film to finish off such a fun and amazing franchise, infinitely better conclusion than the previous film..

First we mine, then we craft. LET'S MINECRAFT!

Natalie is the only interesting character and she’s so painfully underwritten, this was such a fever dream im still amazed this even exists.

I recently reconnected with an old friend/ex from my early years in highschool and this feeling from the film is way too painfully accurate. Holding onto those fond memories of the past, fighting to spend every moment together forcing this old connection. Trying to push back those hardships from eachother that pushed you apart, trying to push back against the changes and responsibilities brought to you with age. Ultimately with better understanding and acceptance of eachother life still goes back to how it is now, moving forward, moving apart.

'That Horn Was Rather Girthsome.'

When Ridley started vibing out to Cocteau Twins I knew this would be a film specifically crafted for me.

While painfully on the nose at times and it thinks it’s doing something revolutionary when this message has done many times before but its still written good so its fair, popular, and agreeable sentiment about wealth inequality, issues with for profit healthcare and late stage capitalism all while bringing actual unicorn mythology onto the big screen plays out well and gave a great watch.. the ending is abit hit or miss but i’ll get to that...

The exploration of wealth and generational differences to these ideas that feel more real every coming day was very interesting to see played out, this isn’t without it’s glaring issues that help explain its lower rating from others. While not frustrating enough to really lower my personal score the way it’s so afraid to bring actual permit harm to our main cast is frustrating and made that ending carry on far to long to help force a somewhat positive conclusion.

I would’ve concluded the film when we are in back patio after Elliot and Shepherd Leopold kill eachother and having the unicorns and Ridley confront the death that humanity’s thirst to overstep nature has caused. The consequences of your exploitation of the unicorns should’ve been permanent, the lesson can’t be learned and it’ll just repeat itself as it has previously if you allow them to go unpunished. Instead we are brought back and assumingly even then go to be unpunished by the law so the conversation of progress being punished by the current system that you possibly could’ve had with this ending is also ruined..

“Come to Daddy”

The healthy balance of sexuality is a hard one, whether it’s problematic hyper sexuality or sexual repression, refusing the find that balance will bring upon hell from the thing you yearned for the most. 

An iconic film and one that definitely deserves it, beautifully horrifying practical effects, unique cinematography what’s to love here? My only complaint here is how its themes can lost in its own pursuit for grandeur, meaning its themes of balance, lust and yearning gets distracted as it works to prioritize its literal plot over its metaphorical intention which can be quite strange since the film is so batshit insane if taken in a literal context. “Pain and pleasure, indivisible” the only issue with that statement is how this doesn’t really show pleasure and when they do it only exists in the contexts of underlying suffering.

Kirsty is a definite contender for favorite survivor girl and exists outside of the themes of pain and pleasure, she’s a bad bitch from start to end and i’ll always respect this diva. The issue is Julia, Frank nor Larry rarely ever portray pleasure in a way to give a proper contrast. I’m not really complaining about a gothic properly stylized body-horror but it can weigh the film down for its thematic symbolism, i’m curious to see if they left these gaps to allow room for the future installments to take advantage of.

My favorite thing about this movie is how it uses the action-spy genre but wants as little to do with it as possible, taking any chance they get to abandon its charlie’s angels type action to turn into a lesbian rom-com and it has my full respect for it.
