Deadpool & Wolverine

2024

★★★½

I enjoyed this third outing in the franchise, but you can clearly tell it’s a mcu movie just by the lack of plot and just over the top fan service with little to no stakes in the story.

In hind site this movie is just a corporate merger extravaganza. I won’t elaborate on that but when you see the movie you’ll understand why I say that. I was really excited for this movie as the MCU lately has been taking a dump all over Marvel and its properties. The film doesn’t really fill that hole I was hoping it would with the Wolverine team up. First off yes I will be avoiding spoilers and if I talk about spoilers it’ll be at the bottom of the review in bold letters labeled as such. I enjoyed the film but there was little to no plot at all followed by an overwhelming amount of cameos that don’t really serve a purpose in the actual narrative. They are in the movie mainly for a few jokes. The only real reason they are in the movie is for the MCU equivalent to Disney adult fans to start clapping and cheering for no reason. Also so they can post online and be like “it’s the best MCU movie cause Cyclops shows up and blows Deadpool” (That doesn’t actually happen). There is only one cameo that actually serves a purpose and that’s to get them from one spot to another. The villains as well are soooo forgettable and dumb. They have the entire marvel comics property and they choose these villains. Also as per usual there is some noticeably bad CGI especially for Wolverine’s mask it looks really bad. They tried to do the Deadpool cgi mask type thing but it just makes Hugh Jackman look fake cause it’s half of his face. I’ll say though to this films credit I really liked a specific character in this movie that I won’t say, but I kinda went crazy at a specific reveal cause there was no way I thought marvel or this actor would agree to be in this. Lastly for the things I’m really critical on about this movie. We’ve seen 2 other Deadpool movies and it’s still the same type of jokes but clearly watered down for Disney. Also after hearing a bunch of characters that wouldn’t normally say “fuck” say it for the 30th time it kinda gets old really fast. I also think the story itself just isn’t engaging which is why there’s a copious amount of fan service.

Onto the things I liked. I liked some of the humor and I think Deadpool and Wolverine’s chemistry is insane. I think the fight scenes are great and the stunts are pretty sick. I think there was too much CGI gore and not enough practical gore cause some of the stuff looks really fake at points. That isn’t a big big deal but just something I noticed. I also enjoyed the message this movie had to say about wanting to be a part of something bigger and doing the selfless acts. Also I loved just seeing Hugh Jackman on screen again playing Wolverine as it made me so happy throughout.

I think this movie could have been easily the best one yet, but is plagued by having 5 writers on board and just a sloppy story in general. It had such potential to be amazing. Maybe if they get Hugh Jackman to come back again as a ing role they can do him better. I know the MCU fanboys are gotta eat this movie up but I hope they understand that cameos aren’t everything.
