I can’t believe I rewatched this entire series over the course of a week and now we have to wait over a whole goddamn YEAR now to see what comes next........ an absolute ATROCITY

Zombie has a LOT on his mind here, and it’s fascinating to see a horror film dive into discussions of trauma and cycles of violence with such reckless abandon (even moreso than H20 and Halloween 2018), but... it never really coalesces into a whole because of how often Zombie lets his worst impulses get in the way. irable ambition, but mainly quite messy, unfortunately.
Brandon Trost’s cinematography and Tyler Bates’ score though >>>
Very uneven and very unnerving (and still way too long) but when viewed separate from Carpenter’s classic, it’s much easier to enjoy in some capacity.
Zombie’s anarchic “grindhouse” aesthetic is as unnecessarily over-the-top as ever - and I won’t fault someone for being turned off by the entire film as a result - but for fans of the franchise, there’s definitely still just enough scares to satisfy (especially in that third act, where Tyler Mane is TERRIFYING).
So much of this is uh Not Good™ (including that absolutely ABYSMAL opening scene with Laurie... yikes), but its outrageousness and outlandishness is so oddly entertaining that I can’t rank it as the worst in the franchise. I mean, does Halloween 6 have Busta Rhymes doing Kung Fu against Michael Myers???
God bless Steve Milner and Kevin Williamson for a) MAKING MICHAEL SCARY AGAIN and b) injecting some Scream influences into this script hello !!!
It’s so silly to me how we all went crazy for Halloween 2018 when H20 did the “Laurie is back and grappling with her grief!” trick 20 years prior, but even though I do prefer the more recent reboot, this laid the foundation for that sequel to succeed so I gotta give credit where credit is due 😙
Paul Rudd = hot, innocent
The rest of the movie = a war crime
Honestly worth a watch if only for the scene where Jamie is stuck in the laundry chute which nearly sent me into CARDIAC ARREST
I remain of the mindset that this would be so much more beloved if it didn’t bear the burden of the Halloween label - it’s literally a Goosebumps novel come to life, 33 years before they actually got a proper adaptation!!!
As it stands, it’s still a stellar start to what could’ve been an astounding seasonal anthology, and I can’t help but wonder what could’ve been if this was more successful back in the day. Rumor has it Carpenter wanted to make a “ghost story” for the original Halloween 4, and I would do ANYTHING to see what he had up his sleeve...
Take a "totally triumphant" trip throughout time with me in this latest edition of “Flashback Films” as I dive into the background of the Bill & Ted tales and analyze the amazingly ageless appeal of their "excellent" adventures ahead of the release of the latest sequel!
